FOREWORD The Class of ’56 is the first Senior Class in many years that I have not worked with as a sponsor. However, as your Acting Principal, 1 have been able to follow your programs closely and have come to know many of your members intimately. Yours is a good class. You have been leaders in scholarship and extra curricular activities, but I think your greatest asset has been your constant desire to help others. Your work in the Big Brother project, and the Pep Booster Committee, are examples of this fine spirit. I hope you keep this willingness to be of service to others with you the rest of your lives. I wish you all the best, and hope your scholastic and social experiences at the Weldon E. Howitt High School will help you gain a pleasant and useful life. Clinton Spahr, Principal. 2 I DEDICATION To you. Mister Spahr, the class of '56 proudly dedicates their Hi-Life. From the time when many of us were only one or two years of age, you have been serving our High School as an English teacher, athletic manager, tennis coach and for long periods of time as the advisor of both the Senior Class and Daler Skyline. These accomplishments alone give evidence that our choice was a worthy one. However, there are other reasons: We, who are the first class to graduate since you became principal, have given you enough troubles to cope with and enough problems to solve to last you many a year to come. Your understanding and assistance has helped us immensely, and we are exceedingly grateful to you for it. We wish you happiness and good health in the future, and hope that succeeding classes will continue to experience your helpfulness and understanding. Halls of Howitt High 4 Left to right: Mr Stockbridge, Mr. Thompson. Mr. Hantusch, Mrs. Gehrke, Mr. Arnold, Clerk; and Mrs. DeHaan. BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education, led by Mrs. Edward V. Gehrke, President, has been very busy this year, keeping our school running smoothly and efficiently. They certainly have done a wonderful job and the students appreciate their efforts. It is my hope that your school experiences have given you the resources for the build- ing of mental courage. This attribute is highly important today because of the many anxiety problems that we must face. To try to harden yourself to the things that hurt is a lowering of your responsiveness—a shrinking of sensitivity and awareness. It is impossible to paralyze some emotions in order to protect ourselves from painful and frightening ex- periences while leaving open those that are deeply enriching and satisfying. What then must we do in order to develop equanimity, steadiness and insight rather than hysteria and blindness in time of crisis. Socrates, who, told to prepare for death, asked simply, Know ye not that I have been preparing for it all my life? The understanding that comes from this comment is the simple fact that we cannot make ourselves secure by emergency meas- ures of the mind. We have to rely on what we have built into ourselves through all the years of our being ourselves. The ways of making ourselves ready for emotional crisis are as old as human steadfastness itself. They are those of knowing ourselves, of steeping our- selves in what is best in human tradition, of concerning ourselves with needs other than our own and thinking creatively about the future. Good luck—best wishes to each and everyone of you. 3 Mr. Kinzler and Mrs. Talmage The Senior Class would like to thank Mrs. Talmage and Mr. Kinzler for their invaluable service during the past four years. Diary of Denny Daler September, 1952 Dear Diary: It's the first day of school and now I'm one of those high school freshmen of whom I was always so envious. Seems so strange, though, not to be with one particular class all the time. Now I'm on my own! Today we elected our class officers. I voted for John Titterton for president, Phil Hedges for vice-president, and Joe Kelly to handle the financial department. Seems 1 made a wise choice, for all of them made it. Every day is different. This afternoon we all joined clubs, and chose their officers. Let's see—there's Junior Historical, with Patti Naugle, Pat Hcaly, Helen Bock, and Eileen Braun as president, vice-president, secre- tary, and treasurer respectively. One of my classmates, Jane Dettling, was chosen vice-president of Junior Red Cross. Imagine! A freshman having that honor. Leadership—Kay Albrecht, Larry Nicosia mentaty Algebra Award and the High Scholarship Prize. The General Science Award was given to Nancy Savalli. Our freshman year is rapidly drawing to a close, and we re all looking forward to summer vacation. Dear Diary: September, 1953 New term, new school and new teachers mark the start of our sophomore year. We had our class meeting in the gym this morn- ing. 1 nearly got lost on the way, but arrived in time to see Ron Schneider elected president. Renee Broski and John Titterton were installed as vice-presidents and Tom Duffy and Nancy Savalli as treasurer and sec- retary. On the gridiron this year my J.V. team-mates are Tom Duffy, John Titterton, Dick Inskip, Larry Nicosia, Carl Schlingloff and Roger Allen. Phil Hedges was the only one of us to make Varsity. Cheering him on will be Ellie Chirichclla, Helen Bock, Renee Broski, and Kay Albrecht. J.V. cheerleaders are Nancy Savalli, Joyce Weathers, Judy Landberg, Patti Naugle, Gloria Vala- dez, and Pat Messeder. Most Studious—Daniel Molino, Priscilla Jeney There's a rumor that Mr. Brown's going to start a dance band. I think Eddie Grabowski, Theo David, Donna DeHaan and William Arlt will be active mem- bers. Cheering tryouts. There were a lot of cute girls try- ing and they were all good, too. I'd hate to have to choose among them, but ten were finally weeded out. They are Helen Bock, Bette Zimmer, Ellie Chirichella, Judy Landberg, Liz Nicholson, Pat Messeder, Arlene Deissler, Renee Broski, Kay Albrecht, and Nancy Sa- valli — a real peppy bunch. Helen Bock also made Honor Hockey. She's a terrific athlete. I went out for freshman football. Boy, so many guys had the same idea. Good material in four years With beautiful cold, crisp weather came basketball and wrestling. Many of our freshmen boys are partici- pating- . The time has arrived for storing long-johns and don- ning light clothing along with spring fever. This is also the season for baseball and track, and I noticed Phil Hedges running around the Casa Lou in prepara- tion for that hundred yard dash. Peeking through the trophy hall door a few weeks ago 1 saw a bunch of Spaniards and Cowboys practic- ing for Girls’ Sportsnite ... I couldn't decide which team I wanted to root for, so I was glad the judges voted for a tie. Today is class day, and many awards were distributed in assembly this morning. Priscilla Jeney won the Citi- zenship Award, and John Titterton got both the Ele- Mosl Likely to Succeed—Bernice Epstein, John Titterton Eyes—Joyce Leeming, Al Plitt Weber, Kay Albrecht, Stu Weintraub, Margie Tilgner, Bob Sheppard, and Theo David among the members. Our first big class dance, the Bunny Hop, ushered in the spring season. Girls Sportsnite is coming up. The Greens are work- ing hard on their circus, and White team's theme is Peter Pan. Should be well worth seeing. Spring is really under way. Dave Brandt, Phil Hedges, and Dick Inskip are going all out for track, while Al Madison is teeing off at Bethpage State Park. It seems as though there's music everyplace in Howitt High, with the same members of Dance Band rehearsing for the Frolics and Stu Weintraub, Dick Holzman, and Joel Ciaccio preparing for Blossom Time. We have some outstanding athletes in our class. Phil Hedges, Tony Trupia, and Jim Kersey made Block F. Club. Class Day already. Gee, the year went fast. Bernice Epstein and Stu Weintraub won first and second prize in the Ladies' Auxiliary V.F.W. essay contest. John Titterton got the High Scholarship award of the sopho- more class and of the combined tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. He also took the French II prize. Dick Inskip and Fran Lawson tied for the Mary E. Ayles- worth prize in World History. Our first year in the new school is ended, and the gay, young sophomores move up to become the jolly juniors. ■ Pretty and Handsome—Renee Broski, Dick Inskip When Dick Inskip, Tom Duffy and John Titterton, our new gym leaders, weren't looking, I tiptoed into the girls' gym through the new partition. Before I had a chance to get into trouble, Fran Lawson, Nancy Sa- valli, Renee Broski, Kay Albrecht, Helen Bock, Joan Steineke, and Marilyn Bausch, the new girl gym lead- ers, chased me right out the door. School has been under way for almost a week now. Various clubs have been organized. Priscilla Jeney was elected secretary of the Biology Club and Claire Duffy is treasurer. The French Club voted for Carol Weber for secretary and John Titterton for treasurer. Margie Tilgner is the treasurer of the Politicos. The snow and ice drove sports indoors. Basketball is in the air and I made J.V. along with Pat Sciallo, Dave Brandt, Tom Duffy, and Dick Inskip. Some of my friends went out for wrestling, and Dave Schneider, and Phil Hedges are on J.V. Tony Trupia made Varsity. On the girls side of the gym I noticed Liz Nicholson, Nancy Savalli, and Helen Bock storing their hockey sticks, as Honor Hockey is over. Liz is now playing on the Honor Volleyball team. First period was omitted today for the presentation of the Christmas program. A Cappella choir gave a few selections, with Joel Ciaccio, Richard Holzman, Carol Hair—Ronnie Ericson, Fran Lawson September, 1954 Dear Diary: Our long-awaited junior year has finally arrived. Big day at school today. All classes chose their leaders for the coming year. After meeting in the cafeteria the juniors decided on Larry Nicosia for president, Renee Broski and Dick Inskip for vice-presidents, Eileen Braun for secretary, and Joel Ciaccio for treasurer. Mr. Begeal will act as our advisor. Joel Ciaccio as president and Rosemary Farrell as vice-president were elected to run the Junior Red Cross this year. We re having a streamer meeting tomorrow night at Patti Naugle's house for the big game Saturday. In the lineup will be Dick lnskip and Tom Duffy. Increas- ing team spirit will be Kay Albrecht, Nancy Savalli, Joyce Weathers. Renee Broski, Helen Bock, and Ellie Chirichella. While I'm discussing football, the J.V. squad includes Weintraub, Allen, Kilduff, Ciaccio, Nicosia, Schiingloff, Alfano, Spilker, Chmielewski, and I.ittman. Cheering them on to victory will be Bette Zimmer, Judy Landberg, and Pat Kerescy. At the meet- ing were Nancy Savalli, Helen Bock, Pat Messeder, Fran Lawson, and Marilyn Bausch, who told me they all had made the Honor Hockey Team. The Junior Class is represented among Student Council Officers by Kay Albrecht, who was elected treasurer last June. At the north end of the second floor hall the lan- guage clubs had their annual election for officers. Larry Nicosia is president of the Spanish Club with John Kessinger as his vice-president and Judy Landberg as secretary. The president of the French Club is John Titterton. Mr. Covell's Politicos will be led by vice-president Emilie Beierling; secretary Marilyn Bausch and Treas- urer Florence Finger. 1 was busy all day helping to set up the junior class concession stand for the basketball game tonight. The members of our class on the J.V. court will be: Farrell, Brandt, Madison, Hanney, Sciallo, Duffy, and Inskip. Tonight I stayed after school to watch the wrestling matches. Wrestling J.V. are Joe Kessinger and Billy Lloyd. The Varsity grapplers are Dave Schneider, Jerry Spilker and Jim Keresey. Pat Sciallo and Roger Allen, celebrating their induc- tion into the Boys' Gym Leaders, threw me into the girls’ gym, where 1 saw Liz Nicholson, Helen Bock, Ellie Chirichella, Nancy Savalli, and Fran Lawson prac- Most Musical—Margie Tilgner, Bob Hopkin leadership of John Kessinger as president and Allan Plitt as vice-president. This year began with a bang, musically that is, with the same members of Dance Band joined by Bob Hop- kin, Maggie Tilgner, John Titterton and Stu Wein- traub. The Junior members of A Cappella choir for this year are Bob Sheppard, Joel Ciaccio, Rich Holzman and John Kessinger. 1 saw John Kessinger and Joel Ciaccio holding up their parts in Rio Rita. 1 enjoyed it very much. In the varsity dugout I see Pat Sciallo, Stu Wein- traub, Tom Duffy, and Roger Doty getting ready to step up to the plate. Last night we had another Junior class Executive Council meeting and the plans for our Junior Prom, Pink Rhapsody, are under-way. We finally finished fire proofing the pink drape. All that remains is the final decoration of the gym. The great night has arrived, and all the preparations and work were worth the feeling of satisfaction all we juniors had. Harriet Harkavy was selected as the Prin- cess of our prom and her attendants were Kay Albrecht and Donna DeHaan. The Prom was a great success. Most Witty—Bill Lloyd, Jo Addeo ticing for Honor Volleyball. Nancy Savalli and Ellie Chirichella told me they made Honor Basketball, too, along with Arlene Deissler. Jane Dettling, also in the gym, was busy, twirling her baton for the Twirlers. Arlene was wearing whites as she was elected into Girls' Leaders Club this year with Bette Zimmer, Angie Castagnello, and Patti Naugle. Although winter is now officially over, the Green team theme for Sportsnite, Winter Wonderland, brought back vivid memories. The Whites led us into the world of fantasy with Disneyland. Fran Lawson and Helen Bock will be next year's captain and co-cap- tain of Green Team, and White team leaders will be Ellie Chirichella and Kay Albrecht. Renee Broski will be president of Leaders' Club. During Boys' Sportsnite, Tom Duffy was installed as next year’s captain, with Dick Inskip and Pat Sciallo as first and second lieutenants. Mr. Van Arnam just announced that Farmingdale took the North Shore Wrestling Championships, with Dave Schneider, Jerry Spilker, and Jimmy Keresey win- ning in their weight classes. Spring sports are really under way. Errol Moore, Ron Schneider, Billy Lloyd, Don Reichert and Eddie Grabowski are polishing up their long drives for golf, while John Titterton, Dick Inskip and Roger Allen can be seen jogging around the track. I was very happy to hear that Jerry Spilker and Dave Schneider made Block F Club. Convention time is rolling around again. This year were all off to Syracuse, with our chapter under the Most Flirtatious—Joel Gaccio, Judy Landberg The first issue of the Skyline came out and on the masthead I see Leona Kane as Editor-in-Chief, Bernice Epstein and Nancy Savalli as Associate Editors, Judy Landberg as Feature Editor, Renee Broski and Mike Farrell as Sports Editors, Angie Castagnello as Business Manager, Janet Flugger as Circulation Manager, and Jane Dettling as Advertising Manager. The clubs are getting into full swing now and Angie Castagnello is vice-president of Spanish Club. The French Club officers are Harriet Harkavy and Carol Weber. Leading the Audio Visual Aids is Bill Dune- kack—handy with the lights, that boy. The Mathletes have been very busy this year and among them I see Bill Osterhoff, John Titterton and Duke Schneider. At the head of our industrious Junior Historical is Dick Inskip as president, aided by Stu Weintraub and Patti Naugle. The convention this year was at Albany where Personality—Ellie Chirichelia, Frank Cclentano Dear Diary: September, 1955 I'm a great big senior now! It doesn't seem possible. Only ten more months of rolling out of the sack at 7:00 a.m. because of our new schedule. Larry Nicosia was elected to guide our class through its last year. Stu Weintraub as vice-president, Fran Lawson as secretary, and Dick Inskip as treasurer were chosen as his able assistants. Once again we Varsity football players, Tom Duffy, Carl Schlingloff, Par Sciallo, Stu Weintraub, Dick Lift- man, Dave Brandt, Frank Cclentano, Roger Allen, Dick lnskip, and I, notice the black and blue marks on the girls legs. Hockey season is here again! Helen Bock, Nancy Savalli, Liz Nicholson, Marilyn Bausch, Renee Broski, Ellie Chirichelia, Joan Steineke, Fran Lawson. Arlene Deissler, Pat Messeder, and Bette Zimmer made the Honor team. Yesterday was the Hicksville football game and I'm pretty excited because we beat our arch rival, in spite of our lack of experience. Figure and Physique—Harriet Harkavy, Jim Kere we all combined business and pleasure into a wonder- ful weekend. The girls as well as boys have been spending all their time practicing behind foul lines. With me at the Var- sity basketball practices are Tom Duffy, Mike Farrell, Dave Brandt, Pat Sciallo, and A1 Madison. The girls Honor team for basketball consists of Kay Albrecht, Marilyn Bausch, Helen Bock, Ellie Chirichelia, Arlene Deissler, Fran Lawson, Liz Nicholson, Nancy Savalli, and Joan Steineke. I'm amazed at the amount of work Student Council is accomplishing. Kay Albrecht, the President, Renee Broski as vice-president, Nancy Savalli, as Secretary have proved what the women can do in the way of government. Joel Ciaccio is backing them up as Treas- urer. Dave Brandt, Tony Alfano, Carl Schlingloff, Stu Weintraub and Frank Celantano are sporting bright new green jackets, as they were accepted into the Boys Leaders Club. Joel Ciaccio is now President of the Mixed Chorus. He is also a member of the A Cappella Choir as are Larry Nicosia, Kay Albrecht, Tommy Wright, Richard Holzman and John Kessinger. Joel Ciaccio, Larry Ni- cosia, and Kay Albrecht were the lucky ones to make the Long Island Sectional. Several weeks ago, a lot of girls took the Betty Crocker Scholarship test. I just heard that Emilie Beierl- ing scored the highest of all. Donna DeHaan won the Arnold Constable model- ing contest, out of all the lovely contestants, Elizabeth Allen, Bernice Epstein, Pricilta Jeney, and Marilyn Bausch. Jerry Spilker and Jim Keresey again came through winning the North Shore Wrestling Championships for their weight classes. Jimmy took home an added trophy by being chosen the outstanding wrestler in the North Shores. He also placed third in the Long Island's and fourth in the A.A.A. Our Senior Weekend. What a success! Thursday night, after much planning, our Banquet was held at Walt Whitman's Picture Lounge, where Larry Nicosia Cutest Couple—Carl Schlingloff, Pat McGrath I thought that Girls' Sportsnite '56 was one of the best in the history of Farmingdale High School. Both the Green and White teams, under the more than com- petent leadership of their captains and co-captains, put on a terrific fight. The White team started off the night with a trip Around the World, and was followed by the Greens' visit to the land of the Wizard of Oz.” The skin was won by the White team and the night ended with the announcement of the Gold Key win- ners: Arlene Deissler, Kay Albrecht, Fran Lawson, An- gie Castagnello, Pat Messeder, Liz Nicholson, Joan Steincke, and Renee Broski. Class Day is here at last and we seniors have only one big event left in our high school lives—Gradua- tion. The Hi-Life staff, consisting of John Titterton, Emilie Beierling, Marilyn Bausch, Larry Nicosia, Har- riet Harkavy, and Jerry Christianson, have finally per- suaded me to let them use my diary as the class history, which has been read today. Denny Daler. Most Athletic—Tom Duffy, Helen Bock and Kay Albrecht were crowned King and Queen of the Senior class. The following day, which started off with our Senior talent show, we Seniors took charge of many of the classes and gained some good experience at teaching. We held a tea, under the supervision of Patti Naugle, to honor our faculty. At our victorious Farmingdale-Bethpage basketball game that evening, the senior section was easily recognized. Tonight, Satur- day, we were all admitted free of charge to see the splendid performances of Joel Ciaccio, Dick Holzman, Florence Finger, Larry Nicosia in the musical comedy, Kittiwake Island.” This was a wonderful way to end our Senior Weekend, which was a great success. Howitt High School Student Council is an active organization whose sole purpose is to be the voice of the student body. It began its year by breaking the record for the sale of G.O. tickets. The Big Brother and Sister Program was estab- lished to promote good feeling between the seventh graders and upper classmen. Large green and white Daler buttons were sold to boost school spirit, and augment the Council’s contribution to the Community Scholarship Fund. A cafeteria monitor system was devised to keep the cafe- teria orderly. A Pep Booster Committee worked industri- ously to aid any organization which was planning a function by making posters, selling tickets, and decorating. Two Student Council events took place in January. The annual movie, CALAMITY JANE was presented on the twenty seventh. With the arrival of Leap Year, the Council thought it appropriate to have a Girl ask Boy dance, which proved to be a great success. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment this year was Stu- dent Council's penny collection for Burwood Home for the Blind. The goal of the weekly collections was to donate a 500 dollar room from the entire school to this institution. Thus 1955-56 was a very busy and successful year for Student Council. 72 JUNIOR DRAMATIC CLUB President........................David Griffith Treasurer April Behau Vice-President.................Beverly Beierling Secretary Annette Finger The club presented the play, Hooky Holiday,” in assembly this year.
