Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1954 volume:

Herewith is presented the story, in pictures and in words, of the people and events, all important elements in our Senior Year, 1953-1954 at Wel- don E. Howitt High School. Editor-in-Chief Natalia Prajmovsky The Nineteen Fifty-Four H I F E The Yearbook WELDON E. H0W1TT HIQH SCHOOL Farmingdale New York Dedication To you, Mr. Weldon E. Howitt, the class of 1954 proudly dedicates this yearbook. You, more than any other person, are responsible for the growth and advancement of education in Farming- dale. When you came here in 1919, you had a graduating class composed of one person; twenty-six years later, when you retired as principal, the senior class had grown to one hundred people. It is not only your many accomplishments in educa- tion that make us think so highly of you; it is also the simpler things, things which sometimes arc inclined to be overlooked. Your hobbies, for example; fishing, photogra- phy, bicycling, hunting, and reading, are also components of your pleasing personality. We have a great respect for you and are indeed proud to have the privilege of dedicating this book to you and to all you have done. Fred B. Paynter Superintendent Mrs. Donnelly Secretary Our schools must be democratically indepen- dent. Freedom from political control and dictation must be assured. Parents and citizens must join the teaching profession in thwarting inroads against public education attacks. All positions in the pub- lic schools must be manned only by those who sup- port the American way of life. The emphasis upon providing equal opportunity for all children, re- gardless of race, religion, economic status of fam- ily or location of homes, must be kept. This is the educational birthright of our youth. It is my hope that you graduates leave us with a thorough understanding of the Democratic Principles upon which our education is based. Good luck and best wishes. Fred B. Paynter 8 The class of 1954 has been a talented group. Many of your members have contributed aca- demically, athletically and otherwise to your school, and your school fervently hopes that it. too. has given in equal measure to your mental and physical growth. Your future development has had its beginning within the walls of your school. As you leave always remember that your teachers will watch your continued growth with interest. Therefore, feel free to return as often as you wish for guidance and advice. Time will show you that some of the finest friends you have had were your teachers. We all wish you every happiness and success. 9 William Van Arnam M rs. Runge Secretary Virginia Talmage William Kinzler Quidance We all know and respect our Guidance Directors, Mrs. Talmage and Mr. Kinzler. During the past four years they have worked with us, arranging our schedules, helping us choose our subjects, and listening to our prob- lems. We arc now leaving high school and many of us are embarking on careers which they, originally, advised. We arc all grateful for their invaluable assistance in the past and wish them the best of everything in the future. 10 Board of Education The Board of Education, led by Mrs. Edward V. Gchrke, President, and Mr. Alfred J. Guthcil, Vice Presi- dent, has been very busy this year, keeping our new school running smoothly and efficiently. Mr. Leonard A. A little leary of their years ahead, the new Freshmen took their places among the upperclassmen. What would be the outcome of their four years of high school? That is all part of our class history. In September 1950, the Class of '54 elected Charles Botsch as its President. From the start, our class was recognized as being one of both great scholastic and ath- letic ability. In the scholastic department Jerry Verdi took the High Scholarship and Citizenship Awards, Sal Nicosia won first prize in an oratorical contest, Barbara De- Francis and Carole-Marie Runge shared the French Prize, Donald Robesch receiv- ed the General Science prize, and Viola Alster was awarded the Orchestra Prize. Adding to the class’ rapidly develop- ing fame was John Cook. Varsity Football player. Other notables tearing up the foot- ball field were Bob Christie, Charlie Botsch, Al Moore, Wynn Hausser, Jack LaMabc, Gil Martin, Jerry Verdi, and Sonny Dan- iels. The Freshmen cagcrs included Wynn Hausser, Charlie Botsch, Ken Stern, AI Moore, Dick Morrison, Ken Keen, Jack LaMabe, Bob Christie, and Tom Kessinger. Tennis rackets were swinging furiously when Doug Koch made his appearance on the tennis court. September 1951, was the start of our Class’ Sophomore year with Wynn Hausser as our President. Class History Still out on the football field were such “rough and readies” as LaMabc, Moore, Botsch, Verdi, Cook, and Hausser. Charlie Botsch was awarded the Hicksville sweater. A1 Moore, Sal Nicosia, Bob Christie, Jack LaMabe, Jerry Verdi, and Wynn Hausser were selected for Boys' Leaders Club. I he canvasbacks of the wrestling squad were Tom Kessinger and John Cook. Ralph Camerlengo, Ronnie Fodsiadlo, and John Tchinnis spent a lot of time at the Beth- page golf course, because they belonged to the golf squad. Doug Koch was still out on the tennis court along with 1’om Kes- singer and Ken Keen. No football or basketball game would have been complete without our cheerlead- ers. Carol Schwartzman, Sandy Cutler, and Ann Titterton were chosen for the JV squad. The Junior Twirlers were Shir- ley Kohler and Dot Lackert. Mary Cortes and Loretta Zambri were selected as mem- bers of Girls' Leaders Club. Still demonstrating extensive scholas- tic ability, Jerry Verdi was recipient of the World History Prize, Kenneth Stern made an excellent showing in the VFW Essay Contest and received the Scholastic Award, and Mary Cortes was awarded the Foreign Language Prize. September 1952, was the start of a very successful Junior year. Wynn Hausser was again elected President. Elected to as- sist him were Ralph Camerlengo, Vice- President; Carol Schwartzman, Secretary; and Bob Christie, Treasurer. Class History Botsch, Moore, Verdi, Hausser, Cook, and LaMabe continued to star on the grid- iron. Varsity cagers were Dan “Stretch Kelley, Jim Smith, A1 Moore, Ralph Cam- crlengo, Tony Scura, Jack LaMabe, Max Arnold, and Bob Christie. Top wrestlers were Phil Basilin, John Cook, Wynn Haus- ser, I.d Hcnn, and Tom Kessinger. Both boys’ and girls’ sport-nites were memorable occasions. Wynn Hausser was chosen Captain of Boys’ Leaders Club; Jack LaMabe, 1st Lieutenant; and Bob Christie, 2nd Lieutenant. Ann Titterton was elected President of Girls’ Leaders Club. Carol Schwartzman, Capt. Sandy Cutler, Co-Captain, and Barbara Chand- ler, Captain, Ann Donhauser, Co-Captain, were chosen to head the White and Green teams. A very successful Dalcr Dance Band was organized during our Junior year. Mike Rosalia, Jean Cousins, John Tchinnis, Shir- ley LeVan, and Viola Alster all helped to make up the band. Barbara Ingcrsoll was one of the soloists. Viola Alster again won the Orchestra Prize for her accomplish- ments in the music field. Mr. Brown’s song “Seven Lonely Days” made the na- tional hit parade. Blue velvet, a large silver slipper, a pumpkin bandstand, and shining chande- liers was the setting for our Junior Prom, “Cinderella’s Ball.” Selected to sit on the queen's throne was Mary Cortes. Her at- tendants were Barbara Gray and Shirley LeVan. Class History Sandy Cutler and Carol Schwartzman made the grade as Varsity cheerleaders. On the JV squad were Barb Chandler. Joline Barbero, and Ann Titterton. Dot Lackert, Shirley Kohler, and Joanne Passeggio ad- vanced to become Senior twirlers. Janet Schmitt, Elaine Pearsall, and Eunice De- Beaumont were gaining experience as Jun- ior twirlers. Carolyn Bausch and Jean Ward were elected into Girls' Leaders Club. Natalia Prajmovsky was selected as next year’s Hi-Life Editor. Her chosen as- sistants were Carolyn Bausch, Assistant Ed- itor; Jerry Verdi. Business Manager; Mary Cortes, Assistant Business Manager; Rich- ard Foley, Art Editor; and Max Arnold, Assistant Art Editor. The biggest Student Council election in quite some time resulted in the choice of very capable officers to lead next year's council. They were Tom Kcssinger, Presi- dent; Ralph Camerlengo, Vice-President; Meredith Young, Secretary; and Greg Car- men, Treasurer. Now the big year has arrived. In Sep- tember 1953, we moved into Weldon E. Howitt High School as Seniors. To start the year, we held our first Senior class meeting and elected as our president, for the third time, Wynn Hausscr. Alex Val- ente, Vice-President; Carol Schwartzman, Secretary; and Ronald Podsiadlo, Treasur- er, were the other Senior officers. Mary Cortes and Wynn Hausser were selected to lead the Halloween Parade as Queen and King of Howitt High School. Class History Wonderful indeed were the champion football and basketball teams. Hours of rehearsing were spent per- fecting “Junior Miss,” our Senior Flay. Priscilla Vogeney was selected Miss Arnold Constable of Howitt High School. In January 1954, our high school was host to four schools competing in the Amer- ican Legion oratorical contest. Our own Greg Carmen won the distinction of being the first prize winner. Although they have not gone through high school with the Class of ’54, Carole- Marie Runge and Gregory Carmen deserve some recognition. They are three-year graduates who excelled in their own class. Carole-Marie Runge won the High Schol- arship Award in both her Freshman and Sophomore year. Gregory Carmen has served as an officer of the Student Council and has been recognized as an excellent public speaker. Last, but not least, is the wonderful job done by the Lditors of the Dalers' Skyline. The duties of Kditor-in-Chief were car- ried out by Ronald Podsiadlo. Other offi- cers were Ann Tittcrton, News Kditor; Mary Jane Naugle, Feature Editor; Doug- las Koch and Jolinc Barbero, Sports Edi- tors; Carol Schwartzman, Business Man- ager; Henry Koenigsamen, Advertising Manager; and Robert Christie, Photogra- pher. We would like to take this opportunity to mention some of those who have helped make this book a reality. Mr. Corsa, our advisor, has proven indispensable, not only for his technical assistance, but for his moral sup- port as well. Mr. O'Connor, from Jahn Ollier Engraving Com- pany, has so generously shared his vast experience in year- book production with us. Delma Studios has done a magnificent job in all our yearbook photography. Mr. Valentine and the boys in the print shop have helped by putting your names on the covers. Mrs. Rungc's and Miss Von Bargcn's immeasurable help deserve a load of thanks. Mr. Kleinpeter has outdone himself in directing the best (both artistically and financially) senior play ever. Last, but not least, we mention our advertisers and patrons without whose financial assistance this book would not have been possible. We extend our sincercst thanks to all the aforemen- tioned people. The Editors ■!
