Proptrty of If the fish for which you're fishing Swim out farther in the bay; If the wishes you are wishing Miss fulfillment day by day; Don’t give up and quit your wishing, Bait your hook and keep on fishing. Class of '51 presents HI-LIFE Nancy Allard Doris Luctge Lois Edling Agnes Romanelli Kalman Slovin Mr. Preston Corsa Photography Gennari STAFF Editor Assistant Editor Art Editor Business Manager Assistant Business Manager Faculty Advisor r for the construction of new facilities and the improvement of existing schools. When completed, Farming- dale will possess an outstanding edu- cational plant capable of providing the best in Education. Without such support, this program would have been impossible. During my administration of the last two years at Farmingdale, I have enjoyed the privilege of working in close cooperation and harmony with the community in general, as well as with the staff and student body. As the Senior Class of 1951 leaves these portals, I sincerely wish each student success in whatever endeavors upon which he may embark. Good Sailing, JOHN J. FINNESSY Superintendent The Skipper of any ship is re- sponsible for the maintenance and op- eration of his ship. To accomplish this, the Skipper must have the co- operation and assistance of his crew as well as his passengers. At Farming- dale, as the Skipper of our ship, I am justly proud of our staff and our students who compare very favorably with our neighboring schools of Nas- sau County which is noted in the United States for the provision of su- perior facilities of education for boys and girls. Our over taxed facilities at Farm- ingdale, resulting from our steadily increasing enrollment, daily presents many serious problems of which our community is well aware. The inter- est in and loyalty to our school system were definitely demonstrated by the recent vote of three million dollars 10 Now, in spite of hurricanes, foul weather and all sorts of conditions that beset sailors, the home port is in sight for one hundred and eight of these worthy sailors. The good ship Education has proved its sea worthi- ness and soon will arrive safely at its Home Port and a tired but happy crew will disembark to anxiously await the next cruise. To all of you, who have successfully accomplished your mission, may I say in the best Navy tradition, Well Done. Commander WILLIAM L. VAN ARNAM Principal Four years ago some one hundred and fifty-six eager young Freshmen set sail on a four year educational cruise. In the course of time several ports of call were made and, as is the usual case, some of these young people be- came entranced by the beauties of these new lands and remained behind while other new persons joined the cruise. 11 CAPTAIN A R M B R U s T E R CAPTAIN A V E R Y CAPTAIN B A N K E R CAPTAIN B E I E R L I N G CAPTAIN B R O W N CAPTAIN B U L L O C K CAPTAIN C o L E CAPTAIN C O R S A CAPTAIN C u s H M A N CAPTAIN Di C I C C o D O N N E L L Y CAPTAIN Du J A C K CAPTAIN E B E R B A C H CAPTAIN E I D T CAPTAIN E V E R I T T CAPTAIN F I T Z P A T R I C K CAPTAIN J O N E S CAPTAIN K E T C H A M CAPTAIN K I N Z L E R CAPTAIN L O P E Z CAPTAIN M A N S o CAPTAIN M A C E CAPTAIN Me G U I R E CAPTAIN N O B L E CAPTAIN N O R T O N CAPTAIN O’ S u L L I V A N CAPTAIN P R E S A D A CAPTAIN P E N O Y A R CAPTAIN R O B E R T S CAPTAIN S A N S o M CAPTAIN T E M P L E WIRELESS OPERATORS” left to right Miss Di Tullio Miss Bates Mrs. Donnelly Mrs. Koster MissHansult (absent) STOKERS” left to right Mr. Wernex Mr. Brown Mr. Valenti THE GALLEY” Mrs. Nelson 19 National Manor Society On March 2, 1951 sixteen of our senior girls were inducted into the second Farmingdale Chapter of the National Honor Society. Senior Class Off icers 40 312 CAPTAIN S P A H R 315 CAPTAIN L O P E Z 41 Class .History The long awaited day is here—the day when a group of 156 un-organized students accomplishes one of its two most idolized goals—to he a Freshman in F.H.S. to walk the halls with the upperclassmen, and to have the opportunity of meeting those worshipped athletes of Farmingdale High School. Yes, these were our main objectives as we entered our Freshman year, but did we think that in this year of nineteen hundred and forty-seven and forty-eight we were starting to mold our character and personality in such a way as to please others and not only ourselves, and that through our goals and accomplishments, we were building a ladder of success that could never be destroyed. As our Freshman year progressed, some students had already proved themselves determined to make the most of their high school career. Among these were Fran Cole, Doris Luttge, Edith Titterton, and Marion Vogel. Marion Vogel captured The High Scholarship and the French Prize, while Nancy Allard and Martha Gray tied for The Algebra Prize. Nancy Allard also has to her credit General Science. In this year, the Good Citizenship Award was given to Nick Gagliardo. Will any of us forget Mr. Banker’s Algebra class in 218; Mr. Kinzler, our new Ec. World teacher; Mrs. Dujack's General Science classes in the Lecture Room; and Mrs. Jones' English 1 class in 212?? As the year passed, we were already storing up fond memories that were to be one day looked back upon with pleasure. As our Sophomore year came it found 124, not-so- green,” students getting right into the swing of things. Charlie Finger was surging ahead to capture athletic awards, and while Miss Godbold's girls' teams were racing towards an unbeaten record. Coaches Noble and O’Sullivan were sporting top-notch teams in both football and basketball, and at last, the Sophomores were learning to work together. Fran Cole and Edith Titterton took top billing in high scholarship, while Martha Gray acquired honors in the World History Department. If by any chance, you thought that the Jay Vee cheering group seemed exceptionally good that year, it may have been due to the fact that two of our Soph- omore girls, namely Dottie Joie and Alice Sennett were members of it. Ellen Wrede, drum Majorette with Martha Gray, Connie Guttenberger and Eleanor Sause were members of the Green and White Twirlers. Our teachers were Mr. Kinzler and Mr. Fitz-Patrick in World History, Mr. Corsa in English II, Mr. Cole in the Art Department, and Miss Norton in Biology. After this year we all could truthfully say we were part of the school and part of its activities. With the smallest Junior Class Farmingdale High had seen in many a year, the group of 89 compact Juniors got off to a flying start by electing its class officers. The Junior Class, under the direction of Mr. Alvin Lopez, elected Arthur Jens as President, Tony Tonachio as Vice President. Kal Slovin as Secretary, and Fred Ludwig as Treasurer. With the help of these officers, the Junior Class sponsored one of the finest Junior Proms ever to be given in F.H.S. Its theme was SOUTHERN COMFORT. The low lights, the old southern mansion, and the outside swing, were a per- fect setting for the queen of the prom, Nancy Allard, and her attendants, Joan Allen and Dotty Leonhardt. Our home-rooms only occupied two of the rooms on the third floor, Miss Sansom and her group in 306, and Miss Norton’s unforgettable home-room in 314. Among the teachers of our Junior Year were Miss Simmonds, English III, Mr. Doyle and American In- stitutions, the wonderful Miss Sansom and her health classes, and Mrs. Dujack, Miss Dosch, and Mr. Manso who took care of the language departments. The High Scholarship Award was presented to Marion Vogel, while in American Institutions, Lor- raine Hummel was awarded first prize and Joe Brog- den second. Agnes Romanelli was presented with the Good Citizenship Prize. During the Varsity Football and Basketball seasons the squads had Charlie Finger and Freddie Ludwig as active players from the Junior Class. On the Jay Vee Football Squad, Nick Gagliardo and Kal Slovin saw action, as did John Sauer, Kal Slovin and Tony Tee” Tonachio in Jay Vee Basketball. Tee also has to his credit the honor of making the Varsity Baseball Team ever since his freshman year. The Climax of our Junior White and Green Sports- night was the naming of our future Senior Captains; Pat Duffy, White Team; Alice Sennett, Green Team; and Mae Eberling received the honor of President of Girls Leaders’ Club. Similar honors were awarded at Boys’ Sportsnight. Chosen to lead Boys’ Leaders Club in their senior year were: Fred Ludwig, Captain; Tony Tonachio, first lieutenant; Charlie Finger, second lieu- tenant. Dick Matzen was the outstanding track bur- ner” of the Junior Year, while Jean Dugre, Bob Kosikowski, and Jimmy Morris held honor positions in Golf. Jean Dugre, Bob DeGroff and Sal Trifaro continued to win matches for the Wrestling Team under the direction of a top-notch coach—Mr. Banker. It can truly be said that what the Junior Class lacked for in size, was greatly made up in its enthusiasm. At last, the long awaited day was here—the day when a group of 108 ORGANIZED students accomplished the second part of its most idolized goal; to be a SENIOR in F.H.S. to be able to walk the halls with underclassmen, and to have the opportunity of know- ing all those worshipped athletes of Farmingdale High. 44 Yes, at last our Senior Year was upon us and just as the other years, it was over-loaded with extra-curricu- lar activities. Although it was basically the same, it was to us, a year in which the rise or fall of any plan was dependent upon the Seniors. To prove our capabilities. Seniors overtook the make-up and responsibilities leading to the publishing of the school paper, The Dalers Skyline with suc- cess. Included on the Staff of the Skyline, under the supervision of Mr. Spahr were: Edith Titterton, Edi- tor; Doris Luttge, News Editor; Fred Ludwig, Sports Editor; Connie Guttenbcrger, Circulation Manager; Agnes Romanelli, Business Manager; and Enio Ba- gatta. Exchange Manager. Of course, as in our Junior Year, we lost no time in electing our class officers. The outcome of the election was: president of the Senior Class, Enio Bagatta; vice president, Marie Giordano; secretary, Lorraine Hum- mel; and treasurer, Joe Brogden. With these officers, we hoped to make the Senior Year the finest. Since the pride of every senior class before us and every senior class yet to come is its Senior Play, we were not to be outdone and with this thought in mind, the class of ’51 presented one of the most talked about, praised, and remembered Senior Plays ever to be seen in Farmingdale. Its title was Henrietta the Eighth.” Also, for the first time in senior play history, the play was presented two times, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, to give everyone the golden opportunity of seeing the performance. Our Seniors on Varsity Cheerleading,' now under the able management of its Captain, Audrey McGun- nigle, are Dotty Joie, Alice Sennett, Pat Duffy, Lois Walton, Ann Denton, and Jeanne Comer. The problems of our school and the improvements all were decided upon by the Student Council, with Tony Tonachio as its president, Nancy Allard as vice president, Agnes Romanelli as secretary and John Floyd as treasurer. Among the miscellaneous events to be remembered by us Seniors during our Senior Year in F.H.S. were: the 10 hour detentions if caught in the Trophy Hall during those forbidden hours”; the lovely? sound of music? floating through the 3rd floor halls in between classes from some of our Senior Girls; and also those Unforgettable sayings which would always find their way into any conversation — expressions such as: George! W-e-l-I-1! You can't fight city hall. If by any chance you happen to find a tear smudge on this page, you will forgive us, won't you? For we all now realize that the most treasured years are over. This highly suc- cessful dance climaxed months of work by a committee of industrious juniors. The entire class had decided on a theme for their prom early in the school year. This theme was kept secret until the night of the dance. The gym was decorated to carry out the theme of Southern Comfort.” A facade of a Southern manor house was at one end of the gym. The queen's throne, a garden swing, helped to create the illusion of a Southern Plantation. At 10:30 P.M. all the Junior girls and their escorts took part in the Grand March. At this time Marion Flowtow announced that Nancy Allard had been selected as Queen of the Junior Prom. Her attendants were Joan Allen and Dorothy Leonhardt. 58 Class Poem When we set sail as Freshmen Landlubbers all were we. Naught we knew of sailing As we started out to sea. A year elapsed. As Sophomores We struggled on our way. Our teachers. First Class Officers, Did warn where dangers lay. As Juniors we all studied hard. Our foolishness we laid aside. We weathered each and every storm With our principal as guide. Our seamen classmates all were true As homeward we sailed our way. Seniors now . . . our journey over Bon Voyage . . . this commencement day. Thanks to our teachers one and all. Who helped us through the strife. They gave us strength and wisdom To sail the sea of life. The voyage through school is completed Our flag. Green and White, flies above. Our Friendships will ne’er be forgotten Formed in the school we love.
