Sports GIRLS' BASKETBALL TEAM First Row: Beatrice Hinkle, Louise Beck, Mary Ann Fritts, Martha Beeker, Lucille Walser. Second Row: Nancy Beck, Marie Queen, Peggy Lanier, Patty Walser, Sue Essick, Mr. A. B. Evans, Coich. Third Row: Nancy Grubb, Donese Tussey, Peggy Sowers, Betty Koontz, Marie Osborne. 1-102- The girls' basketball team chalked up its brightest season in many a year for the old alma mater in 1949- 1950 and went on to the hardwood intent in making the Students of Welcome High take notice. Betty Koontz, Sue Essick, and Louise Beck, all regular forwards, returned for another year of service. Beatrice Hinkle and Patty Walser are surely showing signs of smooth work as forwards. The guard posi- tion was also well filled. Martha Beeker, Mary Ann Fritts, and Marie Usborne, starters on last year's team, were on hand along with Lucille Walser and Nancy Beck, who played quite a bit of ball last year. The lead- ing candidates for replacement for the starting team as forwards are Peggy Lanier, Peggy Sowers. and Donese Tussey. The potential guard subs are Marie Queen and Nancy Grubb. The girls had their best season at Welcome High, playing the same grinding schedule as the boys, and coming out on the good end of a hard fought season.

cifzofzfs BOYS' BASKETBALL TEAM First Row: Don Grubb, Tommy Leonard. Iimmy Iordan, Richard VVhisnant, Ralph Essick. Second Row: Mr. A. B. Evans, Coach, Bobby Beck. Ronald Thomas, Iackie Everhart, Dickie Berrier, Iimmy Ring, Conley Koontz. Third Row: Iimmy Lanier, Bryce Leonard, Bobby Essick, Richard Phelps, Ray Donald Everhart. -4431-1 After losing Five men last year, we had to mold our team from sophomores to build a team capable of holding its own with the past Blue and Gold wearers. The team showed great improvement, and we ho pe to see the team climb in the future to the top as past Welconie teams have done. The Five Hrst-stringers this year were Ralph Essick as forward, Don Grubb as forward, limmy Iordan as center, and Rich ard Whisnant and Tommy Leonard as guards. Richard Phelps, Iimmy Lanier, and lack Everhart showed great skill as subs. The 1949-1950 Basketball Team had a tough schedule this year. They played eighteen conference games with teams all over the county, making a good showing for- themselves by winning the majority of the games.
