We were such little girls and boys, But we learned the golden rule, Our ABC's and two times two's Did vex us quite a lot, But when we reached our high school days All these were soon forgot. VVe studied all our lessons hard. We wrote themes by the pages We're sure that their eloquence Will last through all the ages, Those noble plays and famous poems Learned at our teacher's side, Have helped us to face our public With assurance and deep pride. Somehow we have come through it all And now comes graduation, From study halls and books and tests- Oh, what a celebration! We've dreamed our dreams in high school When we were young and free, But now we're looking for the day When we will wiser be. Hut to part from all our classmates, And from our teachers dear, Brings to our hearts great sorrow, And to our eyes a tear. Now at this time, dear seniors, Let us remember, one and all, Always to honor Welcome School And ever to heed her call. BETTY KooNTz C lass Poet CLASS CoLoRs: Blue and W'hite CL,-.ss FLOXVERI White Carnation CLASS Morro: 'LWork to learn, learn to succeed CLASS Sr1oNsoR: Miss Corinne Stiller Cfass Lsf-o 'zt K The first day of schooll How exciting! ln September, 1937, a thrilling incident occurred in the lives of forty-seven children, for they went to school for the First time. As the years passed, Iireckled-faced boys, wearing knee pants, and little girls, wearing short dresses and pigtails, often had to stay after school for talking in class. Our first love affairs stand out among our cherished memories. Through the doors of various schools we had walked these first years with bright. ex- pectant faces, demanding an education. Then, the first step in growing up came along-we entered Iunior High School. We really felt impor- tant, changing classes and having so many different teachers. After going through the usual trials and tribu- lations, and after appearing in long pants and bow ties and wearing longer dresses and curling our hair- we finally entered high school. At last the great moment came, when we entered Senior High School. lnwardly we were as fright- ened as the generations of freshmen before us had been, but outwardly we were just as bold as the dignified seniors, who strolled down the halls at all hours during the day. We entered our high school career in September, 1945, with an enrollment of thirty eager freshman, having that self-assurance that only freshmen possess. Even though matrimony stole one member from us, we had a successful year under the leadership of Mrs. Russell Smith, our teacher. Our sophomore year was better, because we had become more a part of the school and were not so frightened for fear we would do something that would be an unpardonable sin. We entered that year with an enrollment of twenty-eight. Several of our number became members of the basketball squad, and, too, five of us were made Beta Club members. ln our work that year we were guided by Miss Sarah Hunter. We looked forward to our junior year, for juniors had always seemed to be busy, planning for a Hal- loween Carnival and a Iunior-Senior Banquet. Under the sponsorship of Mrs Ralph Proto, our teacher, we had a most successful Halloween Carnival. On March 16, 1949, an important occasion occurred in our livesg we received our class rings, something we had striven and longed for. On May 20th we gave the seniors a delightful banquet. The decorations were breath-taking, the program entertaining and oh! those lovely dresses! We sailed through that year with flying colors. When the fall of 1949 announced its presence. we realized that we were seniors, we were overjoyed, we expected some great change to take place, we expected a door to open, we were wrong, for ive had not changed in the least. Alas! a cloak of dignity did not seem to fit our personalities. We were, however, nearly the same as we had been before with one exception, that matrimony had claimed another of our girls. We brave twenty-seven seniors remained throughout the year, traveling the road of knowledge, and all our activ- ities were pursued with the help of our teacher, Miss Corinne Stiller. We enjoyed immensely the banquet, which the juniors prepared for us-an entertaining program and lovely, colorful decorations. After about a year had passed, all of us realized what it meant to be a senior. VVe were no longer boys and girls, each of us was growing into a man or a woman. This was what being a senior meant. The year '49-150 is not only an epoch in our lives, but we believe that it will mean much for our future and for the betterment of those with whom we come in contact. Four years of genuine pleasure. profitable work, and the development of high ideals have come to a close. Now as we stand at the threshold of a new kind of life, we pause for an instant in respect to our teachers and parents, who have made these achievements possible. Signed and sealed this fourteenth day of October, I'an de grace, one thousand, nine hundred, and lifty. Carolyn Leonard Testator dfass ggzofzfiacy Z There comes a time in our lives when we must stop to think of the future. Future, that's something we look forward to, but when we look around and see our kids are needing a new pair of shoes and bills staring us in the face, we wish we were back in school again. But let's try to tear ourselves away from school-it's quite a strain I know-but let's try, and take a gander into the future. I can see it now: Speedster Huitt Koontz is winning tme all over the United States in stock-car racing. He is fortunate to have a heavy footg he drags the curves so much nicer. On the brighter side of life we find Mrs. Sue Koontz tending to her twins, While Keith tries to make both ends meet digging ditches. Pat Everhart has made a name for herself singing at Ciro's in Frisco. Louise Beck is the number one cig- arette girl at the Stork Club, but her ambition is to warble with a top-flight band. Looking down the Mississippi we find Ralph Essick singing Dry Bones at a jive-hive on Basin Street in New Orleans, backed up by a combo that just won't quit. Peggy Iordan has won world wide acclaim for her oil paintings. Her favorite model is Nancy Weaver, who finds it ha rd to stand still. Peggy does let her rest though, after all, who wants to be a stiff all his life. Paul Lanier has retired on a ranch in El Paso after trading livestock for ten years. CHe didn't learn that in school.j Mildred Sink is proud of her job as French instructor at Harvard. Betty Koontz has excluded herself from society and is writing poetry in the backwoods of scenic Tennessee. Don Foust's height got him on the House of David's basketball team. fHe finds it hard grow- ing a beard.j Nell Sink is happily married to a multi-millionaire, residing in Tulsa, with a backyard decked out with oil wells. Ruth Coppley and Ioetta Tussey weren't so fortunate, at the present they are living in a four-room Hat on the south side of Chicago. State Patrolman Noel Leatherman is keeping a keen eye on speedstersg heis already worn out four sirens. Iohnsie Gobble has her own radio program, People Are Nutty . When the fans don't laugh Iackie Everhart and Carol lean Foster fill in with giggles. This keeps them very busy. Reid Black has done well for himself. He has the lumber business tied up in the Pied- mont section. Carolyn Leonard and Dorothy Walker find it nice lying around on beaches. What do they do when winter comes? Ever hear of Iamacia? Very few people reach the position Ioel Leonard has attained. He draws a nice income as head astronomi 't at Mt. Wilson. Melba Faulk wishes now she were single. All those kids, not to mention washing the dishes. Oh well, we all make mistakes. Gene Hill is factory manager for General Motors in Detroit, he ke ons a close eye on the Dodge production line. Bernice Hege has scttled down in a secluded patch of woods below lakesville. Iimmy Latham and his charming wife, Florence, find it comfy living in Sun Valley, Idaho. They just love to ski. I must stop for now. Here comes the warden - time for my daily walk - these padded cells are so stuffy. Third Row: Nancy Grubb, Donese Tussey, Peggy Sowers, Betty Koontz, Marie Osborne. 1-102- The girls' basketball team chalked up its brightest season in many a year for the old alma mater in 1949- 1950 and went on to the hardwood intent in making the Students of Welcome High take notice. Betty Koontz, Sue Essick, and Louise Beck, all regular forwards, returned for another year of service. Beatrice Hinkle and Patty Walser are surely showing signs of smooth work as forwards. The guard posi- tion was also well filled. Martha Beeker, Mary Ann Fritts, and Marie Usborne, starters on last year's team, were on hand along with Lucille Walser and Nancy Beck, who played quite a bit of ball last year. The lead- ing candidates for replacement for the starting team as forwards are Peggy Lanier, Peggy Sowers. and Donese Tussey. The potential guard subs are Marie Queen and Nancy Grubb. The girls had their best season at Welcome High, playing the same grinding schedule as the boys, and coming out on the good end of a hard fought season. cifzofzfs BOYS' BASKETBALL TEAM First Row: Don Grubb, Tommy Leonard. Third Row: Iimmy Lanier, Bryce Leonard, Bobby Essick, Richard Phelps, Ray Donald Everhart. -4431-1 After losing Five men last year, we had to mold our team from sophomores to build a team capable of holding its own with the past Blue and Gold wearers. The team showed great improvement, and we ho pe to see the team climb in the future to the top as past Welconie teams have done. The Five Hrst-stringers this year were Ralph Essick as forward, Don Grubb as forward, limmy Iordan as center, and Rich ard Whisnant and Tommy Leonard as guards. Richard Phelps, Iimmy Lanier, and lack Everhart showed great skill as subs. The 1949-1950 Basketball Team had a tough schedule this year. They played eighteen conference games with teams all over the county, making a good showing for- themselves by winning the majority of the games. cqpofzfi Pat Everhart Nancy Weaver CHEERLEADE Dot Walker RS Carolyn Leonard Carthina Merritt ... md .5710 'zfz Sue Essick Richard Whisnant Louise Beck Don Grubb Betty Koontz Iimmy Iordan W S .L ,. wfwwmwwiggug . . 4 - -2: 5,1 Q-am i YW'-1 'Q , .1 E S2 . 53,5 1 J 3 QQ N N WR 'way Baia Betty Koontz . . ......
