CLASS PROPHESY On July 15, 1975, I was sitting in the outer office, with my feet on the desk, stealing glances at nw beautiful stenographer, when the buzzer sounded, and I walked into Cecil B De M1ll's office I wondered, secretly, if this summons before the great Dguill wguld br1n5 me 5 promotion or leave me destitute for a Job However, I le rned that I was to be sent as a scout for beauty prospects to play in an outstanding new production, Bell of the Tri State, written by Herman Jinks We are not surprised at this remarkable piece of work because of Herlsn's ts lent in writing shown back in old Welch High I was very happy because this scouting trip was taking me back to my home community AB I had all my expense funds, instructions, and baggage I flagged a helicopter to take B down to the american air Lines There I got aboard a plane bound for Miami, and as 1 walked to the front of the plane to inquire about the time we would reach Miami,1 caught a glimpse of one of the pilots who was none other than Eldon Reavis I was uneasy because I knew that, if he flew with the same reckless speed that he formerlv used when leaving the Morrison domicile back in his high school days, 1 might not come to a spfe landing I was relieved to learn from Eldon that he would be relieved at Denver, where he was to spend the week end with his wife and five children AI Denver 1 was informed that, because of bad weather, all passengers would h ve to con tinue the trip by train So, riding swiftly across country, I heard a voice calling 'peanuts' 'popcorn', 'candy', and 'The Denver Globe' This voice registered on my memory, and as he came nearer,1 found that it was none other than Charles Goldsberry, the 'chatter box of Welch High' While talking to Charlie, he mentioned having seen Naomi Broyles on her way to Reno to sue for a divorce from Tommy Mansville, the ageing playboy we decided th t Naomi shouldn't feel that her marriage was a complete failure because she was Tommy's thirteenth But what an hone ' I bought a Denver Globe from Charles and found an announcement of interest Triplets had been born to the wife of a prominent Denver real estate agent, Bill Mount, none other than the 'All American Lover of our old school days Seems that Bill had married the beautiful daughter of a Mexican Chili salesmen Reading further I read th t Bill in honor of this triple birth, did not hand out the customary cigars, he gave away corner lots to all his best friends But, if production increases at this rata, Bill may find that he needs the lots himself 1 finally arrived in Miami, and the first person I met was my old school mate,J8mes Ruark, who invited me to his home Janes was now owner of a Beauty Shop and Supply House Whicn was operating at a great loss, but James planned to continue with the work 'cause closing the shop would put a lot of good looking women out of work nt his home I enjoyed a hone cooked meal prepared by his wife, formerly Laura Jane Catlin After out delicious meal we sat by the fireside and recalled our old schoolmates I learn ed that Georgla Stockwell had retired after w1nning the National Rodeo Championship for Bronc Riding for three years By her active ways in school I was not a b1t surprised that Georgia realized her fame in this dangerous busting James inquired about Minna Leigh Mcnffrey, who he heard was living in Cal1fornia 1 told him about my having dinner with her and her happy family Her husband, Daniel Foret, is an Admiral in the U S Navy Neither of us could remember how Minna Leigh disposed of her f1rst husband James also recalled to memory Bill Polson who is now the local veter1narian James said that Bill has a record to be proud of He has never lost a horse because he hasn't any horses James had recently received a letter from Joe Fred Pearson who was now living in the hills of Tennessee and is giving his children an education in that country l1fe He dresses his children in hill billy style from the youngest to the oldest The next morning James had to make e business trip to Joplin,so I decided to accompany him AB we drove along James asked if 1 would like to see the speed of h1s new auto 1 agreed and as the speedometer hand began to lean far to the right,a screaming siren startled us and a red light beam swept across the w1ndshield Then e hxghway patrol car spec past us and stopped ln front of us A highway patrolwoman stepped from the c r, it mas Nina Garrison the only female highwaypatrol in the United States We man geo to escape a flne by prom1s1ng hmna th t our fu ture conduct would be better Nina told us about arresting Bill McNelis for haul1ng whiskey 4,65 Wagizako Q31 Q 0' 9 ,.f oe fzJv ' ' boot! 9o 'f WS? Patch Bill was now the Ford Motor Companys keenest competitor Bill told us that Laverne Beehler was shop foreman of all wash and grease Jobs in his garage On the way back to Miami we noticed signs advertising the world's strong man, Bobby Lee Thompson, who had a fzlfteen mimte stage act during which he sold his great mscle building to- nic which was m de from herbs Bob had discovered in Maybelle district where he played around so much during his high school days We turned the radio on just in time for Kathleen Mcliinzie and her all woman orchestra her guest on this program was the bobbysox swooner of 1975 who is none other than the great Ernest Vvest when we arrived in Miann, We StOPP9d at the post office to mail a letter to my boss and while there we met Betty Newman who said that she was still a faithful old maid to her first flame, who is now Admiral Delmar Baker, commander of the Hawaian Islands That evening, after a delightful dinner, we went to the theater to see the World's Strong Man's act In addltion to the strong man s act the theater had an act featur1ng an amateur singer I was so attracted by this beautiful singer that later in the evening I was able to sign a contract with her for a screen test for the Bell of the Tri State I learned that this beautiful girl w s the talented daughter of the formr Iona Oney In the newsreel we saw that the hide out of Hachine Gun Jones, public enenw number one, had been found in the Cookson Hills, but Jones 1S believed to have left for some foreign ports If this is the .Tones we knew in Welch Hi School, he surely took the Senior Play too seriously After the show we met .Tinuqye Lou Dobkins and she said that she was home for the first t1ms s1nce eloping with a South American They had gone to South America to l1ve,and she had learn ed his ways of living .Timnwe Lou's disappearance had been a mystery all these years From .Timmye Lou we also learned that Belva Killer, formerly Belva Lafferty, and her husband have a monopoly on bus driving for the Welch School Thus, the object of my trip having been accomplished, I, .Toe Pierce, boarded a plane and returned to Hollywood IOKES Bill Mclielis Shay, d'you see me come in?
