Athlrtira Athletics-First let us see what athletics is and what it means. A great many people, the majority in fact, think that it means to be able to win an event or acquire a number of medals. It does not! It means to be able not only to stand the knocks and tumbles of a basketball game or the fatigue of a race, but to play square when no one will see you break a ruleg to take the other fellow's unfairness without grumbling and to stand by an oflicial's decision no matter lfow unfair it may seem. It is a moral development as well as a physical one. There is nothing that will make for better manhood or womanhood than good, clean athletics. Athletics in the Welch High School was introduced by Mr. I-luffaker. In 1909 he organized a girl's basketball team but the pupils failed to take hold, so it was abandoned, nevertheless it was ai start. In the next year J. B. Rogers came. Nothing beyond a little home work was attempted. But the next year, 1911, Roscoe Woods represented Welch in the Northeastern Track Meet and won second in the pole-vault. In 1912, Merle Woods took first invpole-vaulting going 9 feet, 6 inches. Roscoe Woods took First place in the broad jump, making 17 feet, 6 inches. Elmer Carpenter took second in half-mile run. All of these were trained by J. B. Rogers. The next year, H. G. Provines came to us and to him, among many things, we owe our athletic development. He installed Basket Ball as the principal sport. Every one took to it well and under Mr. Provines' efficient coaching, two boys and two girls teams were organized, all of which were winners. No part was taken in the Track Meet of 1914. In 1914-15, a still better athletic association was organized with Raymond Smith as president and only ofiicer aside from Mr. Provines. We had two boys and two girls basket ball teams both of which did some very good playing, winning their share of games. And here let me relate a little incident to show that athletics in the High School has produced something aside from mere sport: to show what clean athletics will do for a high school pupil. A team of boys and one of girls were at a neighboring city and were enter- tained at the hotel where all other visiting teams were accustomed to stay. The proprietor said that the crowd from Welch was the best behaved party that ever put up there! We sent a fair representation to the Track Meet this year, but owing to lack of training we brought back only one medal, a third, which Roy Hendrix captured in the broad-jump. Now as to the future. We are planning to do great things. While live of our basket-ball players go out this year there is some Fme material on which to build for next year. The same is true of the track team. We should be able to make a better showing next yearg to win in several events. So here's to the future of the Welch High School-in her ath- letics may she always prosper! HAROLD R. DURALL. MUSICAL AND ORATORICAL. Although we were not so successful in the Northeastern meet from the athletic standpoint, we were well represented in the Ora- torical and Musical Contest. Harvey VanAusdal won the gold medal in the piano contest and one week later at the State contest at Norman, Oklahoma. In a list of forty-two contestants, he was awarded third place. We are proud of him and his accomplish- ments. P. O. Simms reflected great credit- on himself and the High School in the Northeastern Oratorical Contest. although he did not win a medal. We hope that the students will, in the future, prepare themselves to maintain high standing in these contests.
