All Hail, All Hail, Hail to Weir. These words echo the love and loyalty Weir High students feel for this, our high school, We carry with pride the distinction of being students in a school where mutual respect and un- derstanding for each other is an un- written, unspoken law. As we entered Weir High for the first time, the spirit of our Alma Ma- ter enveloped us and became a part of us. We became more familiar with the routine of the school as time passed, and realized that every phase of our high school life is an essential component to the preservation of this spirit. Without each its effect would be destroyed. During our role as freshmen, the spirit was a symbol of hope. As soph- omores, this constant companion pre- sented itself in the form of activities and classes. It met us at the begin- ning of our junior year ready to guide us through a whirl of events. Now, as seniors, we direct this spirit to turn the pages and convey to you our gratitude to the teachers and stu- dents of Weir High School for their contribution toward giving our lives a more meangingful purpose. -WH but by mid ' er o c pus, tgok w I I vfyh .the completion of o covered wa ay tw rm two ai i sc V, If j 1 . Weir High Cabinet The Weir High School Cabinet and Coun- cil has long been recognized as one of the most outstanding and active student governing or- ganizations of the area. The weekly meetings, presided over by President Fred Gaston, and Vice-President Attie Sowers, represent only a fraction of the time spent by the governing body of our school. Mrs. Dolores Pickens has spent many hours capably advising council members on matters concerning the welfare of Weir High and its students. The freshmen received a warm welcome with an orientation program and a Get Ac- quainted Dance, both sponsored by student council. With the opening of the new year, council began preparing for the annual Play Festival and Talent Show-both proving to be successesl The preparations for the Go to Church campaign and the Thanksgiving and Easter Assemblies were under the direction of the Chapel Department of the Cabinet. In February a delegation of sixteen, chap- eroned by Mr. Endry, represented Weir High at a three day Leaderehip Conference on the campus of West Virginia University. As graduation time neared campaigning for offices to be vacated by the seniors enthu- siastically began. To become better acquainted with the candidates and their ideals, council held a Know Your Candidate assembly, Af- ter the votes were counted and the victors pro- claimed student cauncil honored both the newly elected and the retiring officers with an Inaugu- ral Banquet. At the annual Recognition Assembly, de- serving senior students were presented with Dis- tinguished Service Awards, These awards were given to students who have contributed of their time and service to the school. Here ended a year of diligent planning and much enjoyment, but the accomplishments and memories of the administration will serve to inspire those who will fallow. The members went cheerfully about their various tasks, successfully perform- ing their many duties. Mr. Thomas Groves, faculty sponsor, was assisted by the following officers: Bill Jones, pre- sident, Joe Guzzetta, vice-president, Darryl Kid- well, secretary, Pete Caritis, treasurer, Dave Monseau, chaplain, Frank Vasilios, marshall, and Dick Reed, historian, These proficient lead- ers were instrumental in making the i958-i959 school year an outstanding one. The beginning of the school year saw the Hi-Y busily managing the book store, which en- abled many students to purchase second-hand books at reasonable cost. Ushering at the foot- ball games, conducting the Veteran's Day Assem- bly over the inter-communication system, and participating in a basketball game between the Key Club and the Hi-Y were but a few of the projects undertaken by this group which added color and spirit to the school. The services of the club have their begin- ning in the school, but they affect our commu- nity as well as all humanity. Funds derived from candy sales were contributed to the YMCA World Service. The Hi-Y exemplifies the endeavors of youth in our school. The Hi-Y candy counter does a booming business during noon hour. Row l: F. Vasilios, P. Caritis, D. Monseau, J. Guzzetta, B. Jones, D. The Y-Teen organization endeavors to help its mem- bers develop their talents, and the individual personalities, proving that willingness and forti- tude point the way to successful venture. The spirit of helping others was exempli- fied by the donation of S25 to the Social Service Union, which was used as a Thanksgiving con- tribution to a needy Weirton family. The sum of S20 was sent to the YWCA headquarters to be used in assisting YWCA in foreign lands. In the midst of a very busy year, Y-Teen members held their annual formal dance at the Community Center highlighting the holiday festivities. The Christmas season was made more meaningful this year with the presentation of the chapel program over the public address system. The program was informative, consist- ing of the customs and traditions of Christmas celebrations in different lands, and an explana- tion of Hanukkah, an impressive celebration of the Hebrew faith. Representatives of the Hebrew, Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox faiths appeared as guest speakers at Y-Teen meetings bringing messages of understanding and appreciation of all religions. Leading the club were the following offi- cers: Donna Mamula, president, Nancy Nor- man, secretary, Patricia Zdinak, treasurer, Kathy Graham, chaplain, Karen Ross, historian, Cynthia Miller, senior vice-president, Eve Tru- jillo, senior treasurer, Helen Bartolovich, junior vice-president, Sondra Briscoe, junior treasurer, Jane Carson, sophomore vice-president, and Judy Romer, sophomore treasurer, Guiding them in the ways of Christian service was Mrs. Amelia Mergen, sponsor. The Y-Teens closed another year with a sincere wish to all its members for faith, under- standing, love, happiness, health, and wisdom, and what few worldly materials they may need to be used to the Glory of God. Spanish Club Fascination for the intriguing and ro- mantic language of Spain has lured many students to study Spanish customs in more detail. The Spanish Club is an organization designed to promote a better understanding of this distant land. A car decorated in an array of brilliant colors with a Mexican hat as the crowning touch claimed first prize for the club in the Homecoming Parade. The Festival of the Three Kings , held in January to celebrate the Spanish Christ- mas, was highlighted by many customs, such as the breaking of the pinata. Gne of the most important events was the presentation of a one-hour program com- memorating Pan-American Day in April. This program consisted of colorful dances and enlightening skits portraying Spanish life. This program was climaxed with a school wide Pan-American dance in the evening. The officers who made the past year such a successful one were Pat Williamson, presi- 55 dent, Judy Vincenti, vice-president, Linda Riddle, treasurer, Carolyn Cannell, secretary, and Betty Corwin, chaplain. Faculty sponsor Mr. George Harris advised the club members. The many enjoyable experiences during the year will be pleasant memories in the fu- ture. Here at Weir High we are fortunate to have a library that offers us books on any subject ranging from the scientific to the entertaining. To keep these books at anyone's command is a big job. To assist the librarian, Mrs, Marga- ret McGrogan, in arranging books, filing cards, and offering assistance to students in selecting books are the duties of the Library Club. Members of this organiza- tion render valuable service to students and faculty in our school. Assisting the Weirton Woman's Club, the organization instituted a drive to col- lect story books that were donated to the children's ward of the Weirton General l-lospital. With the co-operation of the entire student body, they were able to donate numerous books to this worth- while drive. The spirit that welds this magnificent, fast stepping band together has transformed the Weir High Band into the fore- most band in the state. Under the capable direction of Mr. Charles McKinney and Mr. Dale Lutton, the band undertook a ponderous schedule during the past year and performed admirably wherever they appeared. During the past summer the band attended a band camp at Raccoon State Park, participated in various parades and other civic occasions, such as the dedication of the Mary H. Weir Public Li- brary, and gave concerts to raise funds for the band. Throughout the football season the band effectuated indescri- bable half-time shows which won the admiration of, not only the student body, but of all Weirton. The band also participated in thuses and pep rallies. The Weir High Band achieved an immense success with their annual concert at the Weirton Community Center. The band also played for the commencement exercises. Many social events were held by the band throughout the year, including dances, parties, and the initiation of the freshmen. Weir High School should be especially proud of its band, for it has heightened the spirit of the student body and has brought recognition to our school. 64 ill P8 ,,,.,..,.--.--v .K Aw .1 ff O0 r ' , -f A 'ilf DP' 68 0'5- if HL ll V' at 'Q' 4 khr '9's .,-..4,...--ff ,.Y.4W4nw-'W WL ' . s.. ..,...--A ,...f--M' '4'l ll war- ' n , I' 1 .11 f'0 j. -AVA K P .-F' 'Y Q. 4 T 3, ff . Eli Dragisich won the cov- eted Oscar for the best performer of the play. The year reached its climax with a school-wide dance on April l0. Freshman Cabinet E, Perlosky, J. Wagner, Mr, Simcox, V. Loving the excitement of planning for dances and class parties, the sophomores plunged into their work with an enthusiasm which displayed their desire to make the year a successful one. They began their year with the class party in October, The Goblin's Gather- ing . The first week of November found the class devoting their time to preparing their car for the Homecoming fes- tivities. ln decorating for their school- wide dance, Snowflake Ball , the sopho- mores transformed the gymnasium into a glittering winter wonderland. Life-size replicas of Mr. and Mrs. Snowman domi- nated the scene and served as jovial hosts for the evening. A final touch to a year of colorful activities was added by the presentation of Shock of His Life at the Play Festival. Jim Roberts earned the award for his outstanding performance in the play. The success of the year is proof of the in- dustriousness of the members and the leaders of the class. The officers were: Nikki Rigas, presi- dent, Ronald Stanich, vice-president, Toni Tronti, secretary, Carol McCoy, treasurer and Miss June Zakutansky, faculty advisor. Sophomore Cabinet R. Stanich, N, Rigas, Miss Zakutansky, T. Tronti, C. McCoy. As the year drew perhaps too rapidly to its close, the scholarly sophomores paused to look back upon the two years that have passed since they first entered Weir High. Dismayed by the fact that already they have reached the halfway point in their high school lives yet eagerly anti- cipating their role of upper-classmen, the sophomores are prepared to take their place as next year's juniors. These responsibilities presented themselves early in the year, but the jun- iors, with heads held high, succeeded in meeting these challenges. The imagination and ingenuity of the class was demonstrated in the Homecom- ing car, which was decorated in an outer space theme and was awarded second place honors in the Homecoming Parade. Dezember 5 was the date of the class party, Santa's Spree , complete with col- orful Christmas decorations, nonsense gifts for the faculty, and Mr. Simcox ap- pearing as Santa Claus. The Juniors re- ceived deserving praise for their presen- tation of Eh in the annual Play Festi- val. Walking away with the award for the best performance was James Camp- bell. On February 27 the class sponsored Mardi Gras, a school-wide dance. Eye-catching decora- tions including balloons, masks, and streamers transformed the gymnasium into another New Or- leans. With the approach of May and graduation, the juniors sponsored the traditional Senior Fare- well Dance , and provided stage decorations for the Senior Sermon and Commencement. These tributes to the seniors concluded a year priceless .lumor Cabinet R Stepanovich K Zickefoose Mrs Dombrosky B Stephen J Mlkita in memories as well as knowledge The success of the Junior class was due largely to capable leadership as exemplified by Mrs. Ruth Dombrosky, sponsor, Robert Stepano- vich, president, Brenda Stephen, vice-president, John Mikita, secretary, and Karen Zickefoose, treasurer. Each page recalls memories that cause senior hearts to swell with pride in accomplishment. The activities this year began with the preparations for the class Homecoming car, portraying the theme Stairway to the Stars. To add funds to the treasury the class sold mums at the Homecoming Game. The annual Yokum Dance revealed the in- genuity and imagination of the students when they appeared in typical hillbilly costumes and participated in the hilarious entertainment. Tom Norman and Kathy Graham were chosen best actor and actress of the Play Festival. The touching drama entitled A Pot of Gold won top honors for the class in the competition and also took first place honors when presented at the Regional Drama Festival at West Liberty State Col- lege. The fleeting months swept the seniors into a whirl of activities adding to their storehouse of memories. Among these activities were participating in the Talent Show and the class party on April 9.
