HOWARD A SIMON F1 .gy Way of .gnttoafuction It is altogether proper as well as customary that we should begin our year book with the usual group of introductory Words. These Words serve, in many instances, merely as literature which is read by a few kind adults, but which is, on the Whole, vaguely glanced at while the student energetically turns the pages to glimpse at likenesses of familiar faces. Therefore, it is only fitting that We do away with customary phrases and let the year book speak for itself. Turn on! Observe! A nd let memories of your high school days come into existence. Think of your school, its clubs, classes and dances, its faculty and students, and everything which is concerned with it. If this should be brought about, We the Class of '46, will have felt that this book has expressed our ideas far better than such meaningless Words can ever hope to do. pedzcatlon They call it the atomic age-an age bubbling over with startling, wondrous, even dangerous things. And they continue through this age to mock the' modern youth, and to laugh at his shabby rolled-up dungarees, his admiration for Grable and Sinatra and chocolate nut sundaes, his strange languages and dances, and his laugh-provoking love affairs. But they are wrong, for beneath this carefree appearance, often lies a heart so mature and so aware of tomorrow's responsibility that he shall soon step into, that it would shame many an adult to know. It is to these outwardly irresponsible girls and boys of this age that we so gratefully dedicate our book, with sincere hope that tomorrow they will be successful in their attempts to make this a better world in which to live. He has taken a personal interest in the welfare and activities of the student body. Through his friendly manner, patience, kind understanding, and wise guidance he has Won the 'friendship and admiration of the students. In addition to his duties as principal, he is the sponsor of the National Honor Society. Mr. Greer is the type of principal that the students of Weir High are justly proud to have. ZELDA BLANCHE Mrs. Orrin Hanlin, known as Zelda to students and faculty, is the calm, efficient secretary of Mr. Greer. Since her graduation with the Class of '3 8, she has worked in the office serving both stu- dents and faculty cheerfully and performing her duties expertly. With the abandonment of the at- tendance oiice, Zelda has had the additional duties of taking care of the attendance. This year Zelda has had the capable assistance of Blanche Josefczyk. Blanche, a graduate of the Class of '45, who started her work in the oflice this year, has already won the friendship and admir- ation of the students. , if DOROTHY ADAL.iS, B. S. H. E. Haworth Too many of us, when we see an expertly tailored suit, marvel at it, but are apt to forget the work and worry which went into the making of each intricate piece of it. We find this also true with our own Weirite. Only those on the Weirite staff can know or tell of the trials and tribula- tions of producing a year book. Picture cutting, arranging, identifying, pasting, advertisement selling, typing and composing write-ups-these are just a few of the things which are forgotten as you flip the shiny pages. The Weirite staff, under the a'ble and eilicient guidance of Miss Roush, assisted by Miss Harbourt, Miss Mueller, and Mr. Haworth, is very well organized this year. -lt is composed of advertising, art, editorial, and clerical staffs. Each of these has a number of capable Seniors as well as at least one Junior who will serve to carry on his knowledge to the staff of next year. It is only by seeing this 1946 Weirite in actual print and seeing the enjoyment that it has given you students, that we have been more than doubly repaid for our Work. Under the capable leadership of Mr. Haworth, sponsor of the Senior Class, the council handled the activities of the class. A Thanksgiving dance was given on November 20. This group faces the difficult task of governing the school under the new Association Constitution. The Government of Weir High School now operates under Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches just as our Federal Government. Many previously unheard of oflices called for by the Constitution were created and filled by capable administrators in the form of cabinet secretaries. All legislation presented to the Council for con- sideration is in the form of written bills. Among the many legislative accomplishments of this yearis Council are: strength- ening inter-school relations by the exchange of ambassadors between our school and other schools, Lost and Found Department, noon dancing, parties and dances, decora- tion of building for holidays, school social calendar, Junior Town Hall, Chapel services, and the formation of many new clubs. On out-of-town trips,Weirton's famed Band has been rated second only to Massillon. At Wheeling, they were labeled as the best drilled band ever to take the field during this season. At Parkersburg, they were rated as probably the best swing band in the State. Of all this we should be proud, but let's not forget concert season. Some of this year's more important se- lections have been 'tR'hapsody in Bluef' Egmont Overaturef' Stardust,', and the ever popular Porgy and Bess. Critics from both Wheeling and Steubenville have lauded the work of the student musicians. Our community can be exceedingly proud of this splendid organization. Mr. Emil Holz, the organization's capable director, and the members of the Band certainly are deserving of the praise accorded their excellent work. They have made a hit with everyone, and undoubtedly their dancing will continue to make a name for our school in years to come. Not just anyone can bc a Majorette. Each girl must be talented and really work to get this honor. Because they have worked both summer and winter practicing, they have done a fine joib. During the term of 1945-46, it was reorganized with Mrs. Earl Skiles acting as sponsor. The goal this year was to create a public interest as well as a student interest. The climax came when the club launched their first public meeting on November 8, 1945, with adults and students participating. The subject as we all remember was Juvenile Delinquency. Through this meeting, the speakers sold the public on Town Hall Meetings. They decided also, to meet every other week in Sponsor Sobolak's homeroom. At the Hrst few meetings, reproducing from negatives and developing of pictures was taught. Then, gradually, through the help- of many local photo fans, all the essentials of good photography were taught. It was not long before the club decided to sponsor a contest to see who could produce the best picture of our high school. Mary Alice Hall's prize-winning picture appears in this Weirite. Not handicapped by a lack of experience, the Weir Red Riders routed five state opponents and three Ohio opponents. The Riders were not as slow starting this year as had been the case in the pre- vious year. For proof examine the won and lost column. The Riders have nothing to be ashamed of in the two games they lost. It wasn't the opposing team that beat the Riders, but the fate of Lady Luck. She upset them in both encounters. Coach Carl Hamill, passing through his seventeenth successful football season, must be congratu- lated upon his fine work with his boys. Coach Hamill's new assistant, Jimmy Carey, former Follansxbee coach, also must be congratulated upon his Hne work. Jimmy became instantly popular with all of the boys as soon as he came to Weirton. lt was with his assistance that Coach Hamill was able to produce another fine team. Louis Woo Troia, a Weir High graduate, took care of the reserve team with Charles Miller's assistance. They both have done an excellent job. The Red Riders had been slated for the state championship because of their decisive victory over undefeated and untied Parkersburg. But the same old excuse had 'been handed them-we hadn,t played enough state teams. There is no doubt, however, in our minds who the real state champs are. The Red Riders still remain and shall continue to remain a menace to all state teams. A if W i fl! C FIRST TEAM FOOTBALL 0 I fix . This year Coach Hamill Helded a stellar aggregation composed of six lettermen and a group of promising reserves. They opened their season with a victory over Yorkville only to drop their next to a highly tutored Toronto quintet. They continued the season by downing such formidable foes as East Liverpool, Steubenville, Steubenville Central, Fairmont West, Wellsburg, and Toronto. The season can be marked down as another successful one for Coach Hamill, not only because we won most of our games, but because he has instilled good sportsmanship into his boys. The two top point getters this year were Paolisso and Orwasky followed closely by McClelland. On the defense it was Bricker and Garan all the way. BASKETBALL SCORES 42 Yorkville 47 Toronto 30 E. Little needs to be said about this group of snappy cheerleaders-their egtceptional performances at all our games have proved their value to Weir High. With three years of experience, the two head cheerleaders, Alice McDonough and 4' Dorothy Klash, are really veterans. The other girls, Louise Grossi, Hilda Carey, Marguerite Mestrovic, and Bette Madigan have each served two years. Wherever the girls appeared, praise from opposing schools and local fans has been given them for their fine appearance, their cooperation, and good sportsmanship. This ycar three junior girls have been selected as reserve cheerleaders. The group is sponsored by Virginia Britton Vincent. V fi 1 N Q Qyxx Q fha: .y,,.
