We'll always love our Alma Maier, Ana' her ideals will always rule. Better prepared for life's long journey For having old Weir High School. 1 5. ' The ez'rz'z'e ,ADMINISTRATION AND CLASSES PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE FACULTY ATTENDANCE OFFICE SCHOOL BOARD ZSFNIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN CLUBS ATHLETICS edzm tion All efforts in publishing this year's Weiriie were made to preserve the memory of Weir High's 1942-1943 school activities for the faculty, students, and alumni members that are, or will be, in our country's ser- vice. It is to them, therefore, that We dedicate this year's publication. We hope that it will be cherished and remembered by all who have passed through the portals of this school and that in future years it may serve to revive memories of high school days for this year's student body. In making this dedication we feel sure that it will be accepted and approved by all Weir High students. As the world looks today, every student will, at some time in the near future, be serving his country either abroad or at home. With this in mind, we gladly make our dedi- cation to our future heroes in all corners of the earth. Old Glory lulm C. Grrrr Secretary for Weir High School since 1938, Mrs. Orrin Hanlin has completed five years of splendid service. She graduated in the class of '38 from Weir High School with an outstanding scholastic record. Known to many as Zelda , she serves students and faculty alike, cheerfully carrying out her numerous duties in expert fashion. Upon graduation from Dennison Univer- sity, Mr. Greer became a classroom teacher and thus acquired the background necessary to understand student problems. He then be- came principal of the junior High School and is now completing his third year as principal of Weir High School. He has won the friendship of the student body by his cordial manner, patience, and wise, understanding viewpoint in scholastic matters. For pleasure and relaxation in his leisure hours Mr. Greer turns his talents to photogra- phy. He develops and prints his own films and is to be thanked for many of the pictures in this year's Wciriie. Much credit for com- pletion of the Wfeiriff' rightly goes to Mr. Greer. Countless details in connection with the Weirifc' have been cared for by him. Extremely interested in the welfare of the student body and untiring in his efforts in the cause of education, Mr. Greer is a principal of which Weir High may be justly proud. Now, as in the past, the board is doing an efficient job. Their task has been more difficult in recent years because of the world situation. Schools must now be used for more things than just to teach boys and girls. It is the duty of the board to oversee the use to which the schools are put and to make sure that the programs are effi- ciently administered for the advantage of the community. The present board consists of five men. BOARD OF EDUCATION XV. G. Phillips ................................ . . .President Commissioners Silas Boley L. P. Turley R. G. Stewart Paul Jeter A. L. Because .1 need was felt to recognize outstanding ability angl achievement in Ylfeir High School we became aiiiliated, in the year 1933, with the National Honor Society. Our local chapter, the Onawa, symbol of the traditional Red Rider, meaning to go forward , is only one of the 2700 groups spread throughout the United States. Membership in this 01'gL!l1i7Clfi0I1 is not open to the entire student body but only to those students who have attained outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership, character, and service, On the basis of these attributes members are chosen from the junior and senior class-es by a faculty committee. The constitution of the society provides that no one be eligible for membership until the latter part of his junior year. OFFICERS P'l'eSider1t . . Working on a democratic basis, the Student Council acts as the congress of Weir High School. Representatives from the sophomore, iunior and senior homerooms make up the council. The members elect their officers, with the exception of the president, who is elected at large by the student body. The Council is responsible for making the rules to govern the school. Acting as the governing agency, the Student Council grants concessions to clubs and classes, supervises social activities, in connection with the local Chamber of Coni- nierce arranges vocational guidance programs, and takes care of all suggestions made for the betterment of the school. This year a beginning was made in organizing and operating a Student Court. The objective toward which the Dramatics Club works is membership in the Na- tional Thespian Dramatic Honor Society for high schools. It strives to develop a spirit of active and intelligent interest in dramatics. More specifically, the club encourages students to obtain a better mastery of language, to develop poise and self-control, and to appreciate dramatic literature and its techniques. Emphasis is placed upon student production rather than faculty production. OFFICERS President . .,..,., Alice Lawrence Vice President Helen Mestrovic Secretary ,,tt, ,, ...,.,.... After general instructions, members are ready for desk work which is interesting and which involves more responsibility than routine filing and checking. This past year the club was busy preparing many new books for the shelves, a task involving a number of enjoyable duties. For several years our only new books have been purchased by a gift of money given by the graduating classes. The Library Club is a service organization under the sponsorship of Miss Dean. At present it has a membership of twenty-four, three of whom are second year workers. These students devote their scheduled study hall periods to work in the library. To be eligible for membership, students must have at least a C average. Besides helping other students, the members are preparing themselves for later life in learning to accept responsibility and carry out instructions. Right now they are profiting from their work by learning how a library is organized, research methods used, and material available on given topics. Any one in this group is always ready and willing to serve for that is a Girl Reserve's creed. Last fall, the Girl Reserves led a key campaign in which they collected over 1100 keys. They also helped make Red Cross garments and rolled bandages. At Thanksgiving time they sponsored a drive in the high school for food to make up baskets for seven needy families. During Christmas vacation, the girls played Santa Claus to thirty-three children, taking the children clothing, toys and candy. This replaced the Christmas party of former years. President , . The Debate Club devotes its time to training members for citilenship in a democ- racy. Freedom of speech is foremost in importance among the four freedoms for by its exercise the others may be defended, but without practice in free speech and the eul- tivation of the high art of controversial discussion the right to speak is meaningless. Iiarly in thi-Q school year Weir High debaters began careful preparation for inter- scholastic debating. Reading and informal discussion were related to the national question of I'ost-War Organization. Weir High School is a member of the Hancock County Debating League and our debaters contend with those from high schools of New Cumberland, Chester and New- ell. Teams from outside this county are also invited to debate Weir High teams. Informal debates, discussion conducted according to parliamentary law, and study of the techniques of debating are the usual activities at Debate Club meetings. OFFICERS President . This year was, in many ways, one of Coach Hamill's most successful years as ath- letic director at Weir High. Although at times dissention spread among the athletes, he did his best to pull them out of the doldrums and give them a good season. The football team turned the trick and brought state championship laurels to their brows. Mr. Hamill's two assistants, Stretch Howell and Pat Hange, did very well under him. Mr. Hange was lost to the service in the fall but the athletic staff doubled up on work and carried on without him. After several futile years spent chasing the West Virginia Footlball Championship, the Weir Red Riders finally achieved their goal and were selected as the football cham- pions of the state of West Virginia for 1942. This honor was secured when the Red Riders overwhelmed the Parkersburg Big Reds 13-0 in the final game of the season. Beating the former state champions in such a convincing manner brought its just reward and much credit should be given Coach Carl Hamill and the squad for its 'brilliant achievement. Severe injuries to several key players was a handicap to Coach Hamill all season, but in the final game the boys clicked so convincingly there was little doubt as to who were football champions of 1942. Two Red Riders were honored on the mythical All-State eleven, Nick Battista and Pete Zinaich were named to tackle and fullback respectively. Several other Red Riders were given honorable mention. To the coach and team goes our appreciation for bringing such an honor to the school.
