From the crucible of American institutions these men come forth, merged into one great brother' hood It is our hope that this Onawa may have some part in carrying to the people of all nations a message of welcome and friendship. It will be noted that an entire section of the book is given over to the presentation of type pupils who have been adjudged by their fellow students as being most typical of the nations represented in our school. Native costumes, some of them modern and some of them quite antiquated, together with seals and other insignia, add a touch of vitality and verve that could not be portrayed otherwise. Ambassadors of various countries great statesmen who conquer nations, not with blood and iron, but with Friendship and Goodwill-have contributed their personal messages in the interest of world brotherhood and peace. A further word of explanation may be of service to the readers of this Onawtu The titles of the various division pages of the book are formed by means of International code flags These flags are carried by ships of all nations to all corners of the earth. When displayed they carry to all men the samesmeaning, forming a common basis Army and Navy is also used. These two systems of communication are signicant to us because they are indicative of the spirit of the world of today. National, rather tha.n International understanding seems to be the spirit of every nation. With such a conf dition existing it is but one short step to international misunderstanding and then tragedy Let us speak and think so that all the world may call us Friend As you turn the pages of this book, reading our thoughts and seeing our faces, let yourself travel to the purple tinted f jords of Norway-to the rose clouded trellises of sunny Italy-over the dizzy heights of the Jungfrau and the Matterhorn. Look upon Q D. of understanding. The semaphore signal system, employed by the United States fl , . - lp s the people of the world at home-their forefathers and ours, the same. Resolve that no more shall there be strife among Nations-for we but strike our brothers. Let us strive for one great goal-World Peace. -M. S. '30 A ' r b 1 X I 4 ' X v f , 1 I , - tc ' A 4 x I I 1
