Herring, B.S., M.S. The publication of this annual not only signifies the completion of another successful school year, but also re- minds us that the final curtain is about to fall on the high school careers of fifteen fine young men and women, the Sen- iors of 1950. The faculty and undergraduates will feel the loss deeply when school is resumed next September. We shall hope for the greatest of success for the grad- uates of 1950. Measure this success, not by the amount of money or other worldly goods that you are able to accumulate, but by the happiness that you bring to yourself and others through service. we hope that your high school education will be a help to you in realizing this and other ideals. The staff and sponsor of the NBlue and Goldn again de- serve credit and appreciation for this publication. The desire to see my old classmates seemed to be taking shape as I met Helen Gillenwaters at Kansas City. She was working as e secretary for United Airlines. In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I saw Eddie Quesnoy, an expert mechanic. In addition to operating his automobile factory he is quite an inventor, his latest production being the nQuesnoy Super Rocket.n After about two and one-half hours of travel I landed in New York where I found George Winters, a great singer and orchestra leader in the famous Stork Club. As I was driving along Fifth Avenue, I saw Jean Ann Ross and her husband, Vernon Curtis, coming out of their beautiful man- sion. At their request I spent the night and then at early dawn I boarded a plane for Florida. To my surprise Frank VanKam was on the same plane. We had quite a visit. He told me about his wife and three children and his wonderful position as salesman for Karo syrup. Nelle June Craddock is the proprietor of the Dating Bureau at Tampa, Florida, and next to her family, it takes up most of her time. At the beach I saw Florence Penrod, who will, after her vacation, be working as a bookkeeper for the United States Steel Company. While journeying through Texas whom should I come upon but Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Vineyard, owners of a beautiful ranch. Mrs. Vineyard is bet- ter known to us as Hazel Bowman. Upon their invitation we traveled to El Paso to see the inauguration of Claudine Woods, the first woman gover- nor of Texas. Since a vacation would not be complete without seeing the movie capital of the world, I found myself entering the faramount Studios: There whom would I find but Harold Martin, who had recently taken Clark Gable's place. He told me that Wilma Sullivan was in Los Angeles. There I found her nursing at Mercy Hospital. My next stop was Nevada and there, on Bar K, a small ranch, I found Elma Jean Walters and her husband, Kenneth Knapp. They have been ranching for a number of years. By this time the summer is drawing to a close. As I journey back to the old homestead I see James Thompson, the owner of the Weir Food Market. Nellie June Barrett is teaching at the largest school in Kansas, good ole Weir High. I am now satisfied to end my trip after visiting all my friends and school chums. Since I have been traveling l have not disclosed my name. It is Betty Filby and I am a happily married housewife. . izfa 51gned2fAQS?7 iff fl A f This FUN? is sponsored by the Empire District Electric Company. il ll Barrett, Nellie June , Pep Club 1,2,5,43 Band 2,5,43 Annual Staff 5,4, Assistant Editor 5, Tditor 43 Observer Staff 2,52 Chorus 1,33 Class Officer 13 Office Girl 13 Junior Play3 Kayettes 4. The 1949 edition of Weir High's football team was not successful in the number of games won. Playing with a starting team composed of underclassmen, who lacked in size and experience, a good account was given in various games. In the opening game of the season against Frontenac the Wildcats were completely outclassed and were overwhelmed 45-12. The Alumni defeated the Wildcats 6-0. Erie's powerful Red Devils smothered the Wildcats 53-O. The Wildcats then journeyed to meet the strong St. Mary's Panthers and were de- feated 57-l2. St. Mary's went on to win the league championship. The Wild- cats were the only team to score on the champions. Weir held fast to the Minden Pirates and were downed 6-O in a well played game. The Wildcats trav- eled to Alba and were beaten 43-12. The Mineral Wildcats overwhelmed us 46- 6. This was the first tins in a number of years that Weir scored on Mineral. Weir stepped out of the league and journeyed to Cherokee and were defeated 90-6 in a well played contest. In the final game of the season the Wildcats held fast to the Mulberry Tigers and were defeated 33-O. Prospects for next year's team look somewhat brighter with a larger num- ber of boys reporting for practice. Seniors that will be lost through graduation are James Thompson, Frank Vaniam, Eddie Quesnoy, and George Winters. The team elected James Thompson and Eddie Quesnoy co-captains for the closing football season Coach, W This page sponsored by the Merchants Supply Company of Pittsburg, Kansas 97 Basketball ls 31 First row: George Winters, Eddie Quesnoy, James Thompson, Bob Hodgson, Don Ross, Edwin, Mac Richards. Their league record of six wins end eight losses gave them a six place standing in league play. The line up for the Wildcats is as follows: Don Ross, Eddie Quesnoy, and Bob Larson at the forward positions, Bob Hodgson at center, with Edwin Kennedy and James Thompson at guards. At the Mineral Belt League Tournament the Wildcats were defeated by the College Hi Comets by a score of 35-51. Weir drew the Frontenac Raiders in the opening game of the District Tournament. The Wildcats were defeated by a final score of 55-48. The team was well supported by the Pep Club. Bob Hodgson led the team in scoring honors for the season. Playing in the Crawford County Grade School Basketball League for the first time, the Grade Regulars and Midgets ended the season's play with records of 7-10 and 9-9 respectively. The Midgets placed third in the strong Cherokee Invitational Tournament by defeating Minden in the first round, losing to Arms in the semi-finals, and de- feating Cherokee in the consolation game. The Midgets also glued a tie for fourth with Arcadia in leaiue play. Dale Simonin and Buck White carried the scoring burden for the Midgets, while Wayne Kennedy's strong defensive play and aggressive rebounding proved very valuable. Don Golledge, Bobby Martin, and Pee Wee' Bennett rounded out the Midg-get's first six. Substitutes were: Francis Sullivan, Fritz Penrod. Jinmie Wilson, Phillip 0'Ma1ley, and Fred Martin. ln the neaulsr division, a broken arm suffered by Johnie Thompson early in the season was a blow to the team's chances. The transfer of Bob Neely to Topeka later on was also a touch break. However the boys always played hard and gave a good ac- count of themselves. Regular players, in addition to Thompson and Neely, who saw most of the action were: Carl Martin, Dale Simonin, David Short, Neal Scott, and Fred Fisher. Others on the squad were Dennis Sullivan and Bill Ohmsieder.
