Do you remember the short stories and the poems to which you were introduced? What about the plays and the novels you were required to read? And when you became a senior, you were told to recall all of the skills that you had accrued in grammar mechanics for the writing of a term paper, the literary criticisms and the book reviews. The collection of authors that you know are a mere tip of the iceberg - from Steinback to Wright to Salinger to Tho-reau to Walker. The great English Bard from Stratford-on-Avon up to Dickens should jar your memory of the many types of assignments in writing, reading and memorization to which you were exposed. Presently, these experiences may not mean much when you are faced with plans for your future. The English teachers wanted to show you effective communication skills, and they also wanted you to critically think about what you had read and discussed in each of your classes in order to ensure adequate preparation for your years of adulthood. We could not do it all. but we tried to do our best. 10
