You have reached one of the most important milestones in the continuance of your advancement along the avenue of life — that of graduating from high school. According to most statistics regarding the percentage of students who graduate from urban schools, and based on some of the personal, social and peer problems that you have been confronted with, you are not supposed to graduate. But you have perservered through trials, hardships and misfortunes. and here you are — graduating from Wee-quahic High School! Malcolm S. Forbe stated. Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open mind . All I ask and pray is that each of you keep an open mind, continue to grow in knowledge, continue to think well of yourselves and others, continue to set high goals and strive for them, and continue to make us proud of you. Congratulations, you have achieved one of many milestones in your lives. Only if you continue to strive for all that you can be will you find success. Be prepared so that when opportunities present themselves you will be in a position to take advantage of them. Set your sights high. Strive always to be the best. Best wishes to all of you for a bright and exciting future. Sincerely, Louis Passanante Vice Principal 4 Norma F. Brown Vice Principal I extend warm congratulations to our 1988 graduates and wish you an abundance of blessings in the years ahead. You should always realize that success is not a destination, but a journey. Hopefully, we have helped you to develop values that have become the solid foundation upon which you continue to build. May God be with you every step along the way. Jack Defares Vice Principal We sometimes see an individual who seems to have fallen exactly into his right place. And what perfect satisfaction appears in his air and behavior, how harmoniously all his powers are developed. And with increased efficiency he works! This passage from Emerson s Find Your Calling adroitly expresses my feelings for a group that possesses the ability to out perform all others. Carbon copies are discarded and fall by the wayside, individuals create differences. Choose to make a difference in life. Benjamin O'Neal Vice Principal 5 FINE ARTS AND . . . Our department is the most exciting and creative, because our skills are measured by aesthetic values and performance. As artists, our work is exhibited and judged by whether you like what we portray on canvas. As musicians, if you listen you will like our melodic and lyric sounds. Finally, as linguists, our ability to communicate in a foreign tongue has helped us to become universal. Our marching band and jazz ensemble is the best in our city. Weequahic’s art students finished first in three of the top Poster Contests last year. Listening to the foreign language classes drill or their rote warm-ups will tell you how enthusiasm and fun makes learning a pleasure. yrryory- 6 2 , 'at ly join Clarftt - UuyleJ FOREIGN LANGUAGE JCmtlU JartfiH ()t; 7 GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT lUuruurtl Robinson J4tad ( turn u-htr The guidance counselors give us direction for the future. Banks KJpk Brrarr Hull, Wc tiurrmun Vlukofai flafzt foun Smart ENGLISH $at tfur inr D oyJ uni if Dimitry Your recollections of experiences in each of the four levels of English should be many. Do you remember the short stories and the poems to which you were introduced? What about the plays and the novels you were required to read? And when you became a senior, you were told to recall all of the skills that you had accrued in grammar mechanics for the writing of a term paper, the literary criticisms and the book reviews. The collection of authors that you know are a mere tip of the iceberg - from Steinback to Wright to Salinger to Tho-reau to Walker. The great English Bard from Stratford-on-Avon up to Dickens should jar your memory of the many types of assignments in writing, reading and memorization to which you were exposed. Presently, these experiences may not mean much when you are faced with plans for your future. The English teachers wanted to show you effective communication skills, and they also wanted you to critically think about what you had read and discussed in each of your classes in order to ensure adequate preparation for your years of adulthood. We could not do it all. but we tried to do our best. 10 .Annie With Sfa,U nun P'99i Pa9f literature, classical playwright and epic poetry urah pulton Mi ML SL row VnrlLull L ru(t tymolt 11 SCIENCE garnet . Ma Cr ir JCorautt ru€t 'rnnrlt. a airptrson The Science Department here provides a comprehensive four year program for students interested in furthering their education at the college level. Students may select a variety of courses in the Junior and Senior year, including Chemistry II. Ecology. Earth Science or Anatomy Physiology. Prerequisites of academic success and teacher recommendations are necessary for the college bound student to enroll in either the Anatomy Physiology or Chemistry II program. A change has occurred in the Freshman Science scheduling allowing only incoming Ninth graders to take General Science. This new direction for Freshman will give students greater flexibility in the upper grades to select additional Science courses. As Sophomores, they may choose to take Chemistry I and then, as Juniors and Seniors, they will be able to select from a wider variety of offerings. 12 natural variations and elements Warlla tU .y JCJi. Health services are largely the responsibility of the school nurse, but effective delivery of these services requires the cooperative efforts of the school administrators and the entire school body. The school nurse is a health service specialist who assists pupils and staff in attaining and or maintaining optimum health and promotes positive health habits and atttitudes. When we need more than the guidance counselors can offer, we can always rely on Mrs. Connie White or Ms. Lorraine White. They not only offer advice, but a friendly ear as well. Mrs. C. White helps us deal with personal and social problems, while Ms. L. White helps us deal with the growing problems of drugs. 15 HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION The department goals in the area of health are to develop fundamental skills essential to personal fulfillment such as: reading, thinking logically critically, and communicating effectively. Throughout the four years of Health Education we have tried to input values, interests, and habits, which are founded upon sound ethics, spiritual and moral concepts. We also want each student to develop skills that will help recognize problems and the possible wise solution. In Physical Education classes the goal is to give the greatest possible development to a pupil's physical powers, habits and character. In accomplishing this goal the department will exercise initiative, ingenuity and creativity. The Physical Education Department tries to develop an awareness and a set of experiences, which will promote characteristics of good sportsmanship, honesty and cooperation. Last, but not least, we try to provide a variety of seasoned and life-long activities that will contribute to the way of living. y lritrr ].'urr„utfl 16 SOCIAL STUDIES Congratulations and best wishes to the class of 1988. The Social Studies Department sincerely hopes that you are ready to assume your role in society. Many of you took advantage of the opportunity that was afforded you and are registered voters. Be ready to cast your ballot for those persons that you believe in. It is only a fool who feels helpless and refuses to work for change. Use the knowledge that you learned in your classes. Be proud of the fact that you are a citizen of the greatest country on the face of the earth. You are limited only by the size of your dreams. Today's dreams can become tomorrow's reality if you are willing to pursue them. Martin Luther King. Jr. had a dream about a world filled with love and human dignity. What's yours? Keyboarding and word processing skills are important outcomes learned in computer and typewriter courses. They devote time during and after school to talk out problems with peers and direct them to the correct professional resources at Beth Israel Hospital; which is mainly responsible for training of the Peer Counsellors. The growth of this program is virtually viewed as an expansive one. It provides counselling for the entire student body if needed. The demand for Peer Counselling in a high school setting is forever growing. WHS is fortunate to have such a successful program to offer to its student body. WHS LEDGEND STAFF CLASSY SOUNDS AND ALL THAT JAZZ As demonstrated at Weequahic High School, music is everything to be heard. The Jazz Band at WHS directed by Mr. Otis Brown shows the essence of music through the use of fundamental rhythm, music theories. and practice of music. The distinctly musical characteristics of our Jazz students seem to have great influence in a way in which they successfully elucidate musical techniques and performance in captivating their audience. ALL IN JAZZ! COMPUTER HIGHLIGHTS The computer education and technology division of the Newark Board of Education has been recognized as a leader in bringing new and innovative computer education programs to urban schools. Educators in the Newark school district had at least one advantage when they began their quest for an automated instructional management system. It's called commitment. The computer-based system was first used in the district in 1985 with Macmillan reading objectives - the basal for the district. Ten pilot schools were part of the initial installation with subsequent installations made in increments of 10. Since the first pilot, a math component has been added that uses district defined objectives with three different textbooks. It is not unusual for Mr. Grom-pone. Computer Club Advisor and his club members to be actively busy day after day at their computer. Through their commitment, these students learn to operate and run programs that reinforce their academic abilities while mastering reading, writing, and math objectives. Our Wiz-Kids have that drive to boot any system's program. 141 CHALLENGERS Strive to discover their leadership style improve self-esteem develop decision making skills Plan seminars pertaining to teen problems • Stress. There are over 250 students in the program which operates from 2:30 to 3:30, Monday through Thursday. This program helps students toward greater academic progress. The students involved in WHS Tutorial Service feel as though it is a very good experience and they are able to learn at their own pace in a smaller setting. Most of all these students are satisfied with their classroom progress due to vast improvement in their grades. This program is under the guidance of Ms. J. Listen carefully to all of the directions and follow them exactly. Work carefully and try to get as many questions right as you can. Do not spend too much time on any one question. If you do not know an answer, make the best choice you can and then go on to the next question. These lines are very familiar here at WHS. The teachers use them as they administer the High School Proficiency Test. This statewide testing system consists of three mam parts, which are Reading. Writing and Mathematics. As the test goes on. the nervous clammy hand students search their minds for information. Most of them try not to resort to the popular random sampling method of Eeny. Meeny, Miny. Mo. relating back to past experience of what that type of test taking method can cause. Knowing for sure that students must pass this test in order to receive a high school diploma, the student would slow down his mind from wandering and become more involved with the test. Nearing the finish line of test taking, everyone is indeed test drained and can't wait for the bell to ring. Finally the weekend is here. TGIF!!
