OUR GOLDEN YEAR Hi .♦. •. .! . .« . .♦ NEW IMAGE NEW ATTITUDE lilt «■ mm XT fable of Contents The LEGEND staff selected the theme for this year to be, Our Golden Year” — 50 years of academic excellence. The Indians are in the midst of celebrating the 50th anniversary and in doing so we are experiencing nothing less than academic excellence. Ms. LEGEND — 1984 Tammy Brown (Class of 1985) Mr. LEGEND — 1984 Tharien ’’Karim” Arnold (2nd year) The title of Mr. and Ms. LEGEND is earned by an outstanding member of the LEGEND staff. LEGEND is the title of the Weequahic High School Yearbook compiled annually by the legend staff under the advisorship of Mr. Warren Troublefield. The LEGEND is the largest high school yearbook printed in Newark. Our masterpiece is the only yearbook in the city with a large variety of full process color photos. All beautiful color portraits located in the senior section are taken by Beim Photographers. We consider our yearbook to be a perfect example of our theme Weequahic Indians Love Success.” Sincerely we know you will share our feelings. Enjoy the book because we enjoyed making the Legend a Success”. THE KEY TO SUCCESS IS ACADEMICS FIRST ♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦if 5 KATHY. SHARON. MICHELLE W.. AND MICHELLE B.. Throughout the school year, the department schedules community resource people to discuss at the classroom level topics which include career opportunities in the sciences or allied health fields, or special topics such as paleontology, astronomy, atomic physics, and genetics. We also schedule throughout the school year several assemblies for many of our science students. Some of the more popular programs included those put on by New Jersey Bell Telephone and the Oak Ridge Associated University. Field trips are limited, but several students have had the opportunity to visit the Bronx Zoo, Beth Israel Hospital, Newark Airport, and the Sandy Hook Science Consortium. The Science Department also offers students the opportunity to join the Science Club on an extracurricular basis. It has been the philosophy of the Science Department to provide a program tailored to the abilities, interests and career goals of the student through his or her four years at Weequahic High School. The department has developed a booklet for both the parent and student with course offerings, prerequisites, credits and descriptions. Each student is also provided with proficiencies for each science course taken. 9 HISTORY = SUCCESS HISTORY = SUCCESS The History Department offers students of Weequahic High School a broad spectrum of classes that encompasses the social studies curricula from Afro-American History to Psychology and Sociology. Our primary concern is to teach young men and young women to think critically for themselves and to arrive at a decision that is based upon fact, not myth or prejudice. Do not listen to the soothsayer who preaches violence of hatred based upon half truths of innuendoes, but rather examine the facts yourself and reach your own conclusions based upon justice, mercy and understanding of those who think differently than you do. You, the graduates of today, are the citizens of tomorrow and the success or failure of this country is largely in your hands. II ENGLISH = SUCCESS In mastering English, one becomes skilled in the areas of verbal and written communication. Here at Weequahic High School, the English courses are structured to meet the diversified needs of our students. This task is accomplished through the careful planning and presentation of course objectives, proficiency expectations and meaningful units. In addition to our regular English courses, the curriculum includes: Journalism, Speech, Drama, Creative Writing and Honors English. One of the most diversified levels of instruction takes place during the senior year, in which our instructors are preparing students for college and the work world. In addition to the study of literary masterpieces, and a strong emphasis on the basic skills, a standard item is the compilation of a formal research paper of the graduating senior class. The teachers of the English Department believe that if every student can leave Weequahic High School with skills that relate to each of his goals, our objectives have been accomplished. 12 Math = Success Minimum basic skills: seems to be the center of concern for the Mathematics Department this year. It’s more than just back to basics. It’s communication, records, feedback, individualized teaching, and followups. Students are still required to take a Mathematics exam their junior year to qualify them for graduation and, if required, Mathematics Review for those who need additional instruction. Amidst all this remedial work, courses like Advanced Placement Math (MAP), trigonometry, and geometry are still managing to survive in the curriculum. These are your basic college prep courses. Tutoring is a vital part of the Compensatory Education program in the Math Department and usually accompanies courses like General Math and Pre-Algebra. Consumer Math is a practical elective offered to grades ten through twelve. In this course, the student learns how to manage money, how to work percentages, discounts, mark-ups, mark-downs, budgeting, banking, and investing. Certainly in this age of the calculator, the study of Mathematics is holding its own. MUSIC = SUCCESS Most of the students of Weequahic High School possess a high level of innate talent and many of the students harbor a sharp artistic sensitivity. In the Music Department we seek to direct the students to first develop an awareness of their talent, sensitivity and potential. Secondly, after the students become aware of their individuality, the emphasis is put on nurturing the individual to grow intellectually and independently through critical thinking and self-evaluation. The third phase is to motivate the students to continue, at some level, an interest and or direct participation in musical performance. To ahcieve our goals the Music Department offer a music major program as well as diverse music classes such as Music Workshop I and II, Chorus, Advanced Mixed Chorus; instruction in instruments (strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion). Marching band and Jazz Band. 14 BUSINESS = SUCCESS Business as usual” in the Business Department means preparing students for the job market 21st century and before. Many students are presently working in the job market and have been placed with the help of the course, Cooperative Office Education, taught by Mr. Barry Berger. Students spend half a day in school and half a day on the job with Mr. Berger supervising their movements. The department feels that every student should be exposed to a course in business, because we all are consumers and can use the knowledge gained from a business course. The Business Department has something for every student: Personal Typing, Business Machines, General Business, Business Math, Book and Record Keeping I and II, Machine Transaction, Office Practice, Stenography I and II, Business Communication and Data Processing. GUIDANCE = SUCCESS For some high school students, the Guidance Counselor does not become significant until the senior year. At this juncture, graduates become concerned about credits, too much work from teachers and the unexpressed fear of what will happen to them after graduation. The Guidance Department anticipates these concerns and many opportunities are provided to assist the students in making decisions which meet their interests, skills and goals. Major activities during the year have been: Group and individual conferences with representatives from colleges, career schools, military service, etc. Consistent use of the computer information system for up-to-date college and career information according to specific needs. Accompanying students to out of state college ca-reer conferences. Financial Aid Workshops for parents and students. Alumni Day Program featuring recent graduates. Informing students about non-school related programs or projects to facilitate cultural and or social awareness. 16 EDITOR-IN-CHIEF 17 1984 HALLOWEEN DISCO IT'S A REAL THRILLER 19 THE CLASS OF 1984 SENIOR FASHIONS PART I IS DESIGNED BY DARLENE LAMPLtY. I offer congratulations to the Class of 1984. and commend you for the outstanding manner in which you have assembled this yearbook, and for the way in which you are presently conducting other related graduation activities. You have prepared four years for this moment, and indeed deserve all the accolades associated with these events. Graduation is. as everyone knows, both an ending and a beginning. The experiences and knowledge you have attained at Weequahic High School should allow you to be more perceptive, more sensitive, and more concerned for the overwhelming, educational, economic and ethical problems which face us all. There are new ideas that beckon you. and unresolved problems which challenge you for solutions. Each of you must make the personal and delicate choice of which career to pursue. You will succeed in your choice since you have been prepared by dedicated and highly skilled educators, and you possess the will to accept the challenges. Through your faith and through your deeds, you shape your life, and eventually you will help shape the lives of others as well. Again I congratulate you and wish you continued success. It is hoped that you will continue to seek knowledge and that you will experience a full life, rich with the rewards of accomplishment and treasures of purposeful existence. I believe that the difference between a nation that will flourish and one which will merely survive, will be in how well it prepares its youth. I also believe that young people can be adequately prepared through the combined efforts of parents, teachers, administrators boards of education, and the students themselves. I know that you. the 1984 Graduating Class of Weequahic High School, will be the scientists, the leaders and the thinkers, who will make that difference. GOOD LUCK. Yours Truly. Teaching physical education is not like teaching in any other area. Its object is to give the greatest possible development to a pupil’s physical powers, habits and character. In accomplishing this, we expect that the teacher will exercise iniative, ingenuity, and creative ability. Physical education is mandated by the State Department to be part of the education process in each grade of the senior high school. Every pupil must have successfully completed a year in physical education for every year in school. 62 PRACTICAL ARTS = SUCCESS The Practical Arts Department prepares students for the year 2000 with concrete skills and consumer knowledge. The department attempts to provide each student with preparation, growth experiences and guidance for modern living through an instructional program which covers the technical, aesthetic, comsumer, recreational, occupational, organizational and cultural aspects of our society. The department encourages hands on activities to provide specific vocational skills and competencies. Advanced courses are offered to strengthen student proficiencies for employment opportunities. Courses offered are: Architectural Drawing, Clothing I and II, Consumer Education, Cooperative Home Economics, Cooperative Industrial Education, Early Childhood Development, Foods I and II, Graphic Arts I, and II, Mechanical Drawing I and II, Metals I and II, Woods I, II and III. 63 CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY LIVE IF A CHILD LIVES WITH CRITICISM.
