CLAUDE BEY PRINCIPAL әкет Principal's Message Never before has a high school diploma and all it symbolizes meant so much to our youth. In the present moment of the declining economy, political change-over, international unrest, racial discontent, and the escalation of unemployment, a general fear has pervaded our nation and this fear has spiraled itself down to the most vulnerable of our society - YOU. This is the third year that I have had the oppurtunity to leave a message with the graduating class at Weequahic. If the tone of this message seems to bear urgency, let me assure you- there is a NEED. Get yourself ready for the future NOW. The spoon is being eased from our mouths. Colleges are no longer going to accept the mediocre nor even the remedial. Federally funded programs are the throes of discontinu- ance and projects like EOF may be defunct even in your college life-time. The world is growing more competitive and we're back to Darwin's “Survival of the fittest”; but never before has its meaning been so relevant to us as a people. Time is a commodity you cannot afford to waste. Look around you. What do you see? A lot of people wasting their time. These are the people who sit back and complain about what isn't and reminisce uselessly about what might have been. Are you one of those people? Let's hope not! There is a sign in my office that reads “It is only the ignorant who despise education”. You have a diploma now. It’ symbolizes a general and liberal education and a degree of competency in the prerequisites for graduation. Let's hope you haven't wasted your time or short changed yourself in the quest for education. Ask yourself, Am I - will I be an asset to society? And if so, what must I do to prepare myself for this srevice? Do what is necessary to succeed and in the face of opposition you'll Бе one of the ones to make it because you took it upon yourself to prepare yourself. The very best to you and your future. Mr. Claude S. Bey PRINCIPAL 33 IN MEMORY OF AGNES SHIPMAN Agnes (Boone) Shipman was born on March 26, 1943 in Arapahoe, North Carolina, the first of three daughters to the union of John Washington Boone and Doris Dixon (Boone) Jones. She began her employment as a teacher in Clinton, North Carolina, and upon her move to New Jersey she continued in this field of work at West Kinney Junior High School in Newark, New Jersey. There she was a faculty member who loved her work and worked faithfully even when her health was failing. Just this past school term she transferred to Weequahic High School here in Newark, New Jersey. Agnes will surely be fondly remembered by all whose paths of life she has crossed. If you're wondering yourself as I did what the Legend of the Calumet is, a brief paragraph should clear your thoughts and afford you a translation for the year's message of '82. The name Calumet originally symbolized masculinity and femininity and was used by the Native Americans of the Eastern regions and Midwestern plains to serve a dual purpose. The legendary Calumet functioned in ceremonies as a pipe of peace and one of war. To these tribes, the appearance of the Calumet signified the peace times and the war times. In this message to the populus at Weequahic, the association of peace will be to harmony as that of war will be to woe. Such as it is the Calumet, a legend symbolic of peace and war, exists here at Weequahic though the physical presence of the Calumet has long since vanished, the spirit of what the Calumet represents, is alive and well in these corridors. In keeping with the Legend of the Calumet, the student body is the one group most aware of the times that bring them peace and of those they encounter that create a sense of war. In their daily routine of walking to school, entering the building, attending classes and being dismissed they all are confronted with the paradox of their peaces” intertwined with their wars. Students were asked in interviews to share some of the times at Weequahic when they had felt a sense of peace. They described meeting with friends; talking; opening their lockers; getting a B in English or even a C in Reading; being chosen Ms. Weequahic or Miss. OBA; brushing their hair; meeting a boyfriend; learning something; making A's on Health tests; getting to school on time; speaking up for yourself; and avoiding a fight, as their peace experiences. Many had more than enough to say about the experiences they'd had that brought them a feeling of peace, however, they also provided those experiences that had brought them a sense of war. Losing things in school; being left out of the building; missing their first period class; a cousin getting jumped; getting an F when you thought you shouldn't; not doing your homework; being suspended from gym; going outside and someone trying to hit you with a snowball; somebody talking about you, grades dropping; something a teacher said; getting your hat thrown away while trying to get into the building. These were their most woeful school experiences. Though these times exist, the extent of their lasting effect on us, we determine. By the power of choice we hold, each of us selects the category of experiences in which we prefer to dwell, whether they are those of peace or those of war, we decide the burden of our thoughts. The peaceful or the woeful? Life has both kinds to offer in its course, but only the more peaceful ones to those who make a bonafide effort to maintain a harmony within themselves as their “peaces” are not overshadowed and lost by the strength of their own woeful thinking. Indeed both kinds are a realistic side of life here at Weequahic High School, yet more often than not the many peaceful experiences students and teachers have had, tip the scales when weighed against those causing a feeling of war. For it is even in the presence of peace and war, harmony and woe, laughter and anger, cheers and tears, that learning will and does take place. Oriental philosophers have come to grips with the existence of the Yen and the Yan; Native cheftains have long since recognized the uncontested power of good and evil. As human beings we are daily confronted with the value of life and the absoluteness of death. At Weequhic High School in the year of 1982, the Yen and the Yan, the Good and the Evil, the Life and the Death, and the experiences of peace and war all exist here together as they have done for many decades waiting for the life you breathe into them, but ultimately the choice is yours. Here at Weequahic High School, the English courses are geared and structured to meet the diversified needs of our students. This task is accomplished through the careful planning and presentation of course objectives, proficiency expectations and meaningful units. In addition to our regular English courses, the curriculum includes: Journalism, Speech, Drama, Creative Writing and Honors English. One of the most diversified levels of instruction takes place during the Senior year, in which our instructors are preparing students for college academe or the work world. In addition to the study of literary masterpieces, and a strong emphasis on the basic skills, a standard item is the compilation of a formal Research Paper for the graduating senior class. The teachers of the English Department believe that if every student can leave Weequahic High School with skills that relate to each of his goals, our objectives have been accomplished. 145 ICTICAL AND FINE ARTS T + PRACTICAL ARTS DEPARTMENT The Practical Arts Department prepares students for the year 2000 with concrete skills and consumer knowledge. The department attempts to provide each student with preparation, growth experiences and guidance for modern living through an instructional program which covers the technical, aestetic, consumer, recreational, occupational, organizational and cultural aspects of our society. The department encourages “hands on” activities to provide specific vocational skills and competencies. Advanced courses are offered to strengthen student proficiencies for employment opportunities. Courses offered are: Arcitectural Drawing, Clothing I and II, Consumer Education, Cooperative Home Economics, Cooperative Industrial Education, Early Childhood Development, Foods I and II, Graphic Arts I, II and III Mechanical Drawing l and II, Metals I and П, Woods I, II and III. HISTORY The History Department offers students of Weequahic High School a broad spectrum of classes that encompasses the social studies curricula from Afro-American History to Psychology and Sociology. Our primary concern is to teach young men and young women to think critically for thenselves and to arrive at a decision that is based upon fact, and not myth or prejudice. Do not listen to the soothsayer who preaches violence of hatred based upon half truths or innuendoes, but rather examine the facts yourself and reach your own conclusions based upon justice, mercy and understanding of those who think differently than you do. You, the graduates of today, are the citizens of tomorrow and the success or failure of this country is largely in your hands. SCIENCE Abd % SCIENCE DEPARTMENT The Science Department offers a deversified program for all students, whether they be college bound or not. Here at Weequahic High School, we make available many opportunities for students with varying abilities, interests and goals. In the Freshman year, students began their study of Science with an activity-centered, “hands-on” approach to Science with the course called Physical Science. The Sophomore Year introduces the students to Biology or Urban Ecology. Both programs investigate the world of living things, with Urban Ecology stressing the topics: Conservation, Pollution and Energy Resources Alternatives. The Junior Year becomes more rigorous with the study of Chemistry or Honors Biology are courses designed to the college bound student. Chemistry is a laboratory course and investigates such topics as chemical reactions, acids and bases, atomic structure and problem solving. Honors Biology is designed as a second year Biology course involving a more detailed study of the topics covered in the first year of Biology. Seniors have the option of taking either A.P. Chemistry, Honors Physics or Physics Depending on the students interests and abilities. These courses are designed for the college bound students interested in a career dealing with science or a science related field. Students interested in a technical career may select Science Math or Technology - People - Environment as an elective in either the Junior or Senior Year of high school. Science Math is designed to familiarize students with laboratory thchniques and instrumentation. Technology - People - Environment is designed to develop technological literacy. This course is entirely activity - centered. 152 І PHYSICAL EDUCATION PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical Education involves the physical activities of running, jumping, kicking, throwing, batting, pulling, balancing and lifting. Teaching physical education is not unlike teaching in any other area. Its object is to give the greatest possible development to a pupil's physical powers, habits and character. In accomplishing this we expect that the teacher will exercise iniative, ingenuity, and creative ability. Physical education is mandated by the State Department to be part of the education process in each grade of the senior high school. Every pupil must have successfully completed a year in physical education for every year in school. 153 DUIDAN 0 | Пи GUIDANCE FOR SENIORS For some high school students, the Guidance Counselor does not become significant until the senior year. At this juncture, they become concerned about credits, too much work from teachers and the unexpressed fear or what will happen to them after graduation. The Guidance Department anticipates these concerns and many opportunities are provided to assist the students in making decisions which meet their interests, skills and goals. Major activities during the year have b een; Group and individual conferences with representatives from colleges, career schools, military service, etc. Consistent use of the computer information system for up-to-date college and career information according to specific needs. Accompanying students to off-site college career conferences. Financial Aid Workshops (for parents and students). Alumni Day Program featuring recent graduates. Informing students about non school related programs or projects to facilitate cultural and or social awareness. As usual, it is anticipated that approximately 50% of the seniors will enroll in some type of post high school education or training program. Each of the eight quidance counselors worked with seniors. For some, it was a new experience. The Department extends best wishes to each senior and wishes you to know that there is no challenge equal to that of assisting you in identifying and establishing your relationship to the world with its richness of joy, anguish, trust and fear. BUSINESS Business as usual in the Business Department means preparing students for the job market, 21st century and before. Many students are in the job market right now, placed with the help of the course Cooperative Office Education taught by Mr. Berger. Students spend half a day in school and half a day on the job with Mr. Berger supervising their movements. The department feels that every student should be exposed to a course in business, because we all are consumers and can use the knowledge gained from a business course. The Business Department has something for every student: Personal typing, Business Machines, General Business, Business Math, Book- and Record Keeping I and II, Machine Transaction, Office Practice, Stenography I and II, Business Communi- cation and Data Processing. MATHEMATICS y um I M MATH DEPARTMENT Minimum basic skills seems to be the center of concern for the Mathematics Department this year. It's more than just Back- to Basics. It's communication, records, feedback, individualized teaching, and follow-ups. Students are still required to take a Math exam their junior year to qualify them for graduation and, if required, 11th year Review for those who need additional instruction. Amidst all this remedial work, courses like Advanced Place- ment Math (MAP), trigonometry, and geometry are still managing to survive in the curriculum. These are your basic college prep courses. Tutoring is a vital part of the Compensatory education program in the Math Department and usually accompanies courses like General Math and Pre-Algebra. Consumer Math is a practical elective offered to grades ten through twelve. In this course, the student learns how to manage money, how to work percentages, discounts, mark-ups, mark- downs, budgeting, banking, and investing. Certainly in this age of the caculator, the study of Math is holding its own. MUSIC THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT Most of the students at Weequahic High School possess a high level of innate talent and many of the students harbor a sharp artistic sensitivity. In the music department we seek to direct the students to first develop an awareness of their talent and sensitivity and potential. Secondly, after the students become aware of their individualitv, the emphasis is put on nurturing the individual to grow intellectu- ally and independently through critical thinking and self-evalua- tion. The third phase is to motivate the students to continue, at some level, an interest and or direct participation in musical performance. To achieve our goals the music department offer a music major program as will as diverse music classes such as music workshop I and II, chorus, advanced mixed chorus; instruction in the instru- mental families (strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion) band, marching band and jazz band. WORKING SENIORS .... 158 . . . ON THE JOB! EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT We were all once babies. The Leg- end Staff enjoys including senior baby photos in the Legend.
