CLAUDE BEY - PRINCIPAL W.H.S. 32 Never before has a high school diploma and all it symbolizes meant so much to our youth. In the present moment of the declining economy, political change over, international unrest, ratial discontent, and the escalation of unemployment, a general fear has pervaded our nation and this fear has spiraled itself down to the most vulnerable of our society — you. This is the second year that I have had the opportunity to leave a message with the graduating class at Weequahic. If the tone of this message seems to bear urgency, let me assure you — there is a need. Get yourself ready for the future now. The spoon is being eased from our mouths Colleges are no longer going to accept the mediocre nor even the remedial. Federally funded programs are the throes of discontinuance and projects like EOF may be defunct even in your college life-time. The world is growing more competitive and we’re back to Darwin's “Survival of the fittest ; but never before has its meaning been so relevant to us as a people. Time is a commodity you cannot afford to waste. Look around you. What do you see? A lot of people wasting their time. These are the people who sit back and complain about what isn’t and reminisce uselessly about what might have been. Are you one of these people? Let’s hope not! There is a sign in my office that reads It is only the ignorant who despise education. You have a diploma now. It symbolizes a general and liberal education and a degree of competency in the prerequisites for graduation Let’s hope you haven't wasted your time or short changed yourself in the quest for education. Ask yourself. Am I will 1 be an asset to society? And if so. what must I do to prepare myself for this service? Do what is necessary to succeed and in the face of opposition you'll be one of the ones to make it because you took it upon yourself to prepare yourself. The very best to you in the future. I have learned to express my ideas, self-discipline, and great leadership abilities which I feel are most important. Leadership is important'because it is needed to keep the group cohesive and to direct it toward accomplishing certain goals. Leadership skills are particulary important when conflicts arise. The leader must use his human relation skills to solve conflicting interests within the group. He may not be the most creative contributor of ideas, but he can see the strength of conflicting proposals. He can win the respect of all factions, and guide them toward a satisfactory compromise. A group usually responds to Its leader because it thinks he is a wise man or an expert, or because it agrees with him. but the Marching Band responds to me because it knows that I have tried very hard to promote the success of the Marching Band I will always remember the good times I had in the Marching Band. Being Drum Major has truly been a remarkable experience and I must say that I am proud and honored to have lead the Marching Band. Good Luck to the Marching 100 and the very best of success to the Class of 1981. Mr Friedman, this year's only senior counselor, conducted three workshop on financial aid to which parents were invited. He has done a fantastic job in checking and rechecking student records to make certain our students meet all the requirements for graduation and take the necessary steps in planning further education after high school. Weequahic sends about 60% of its graduates on to further postsecondary education or training. We are certain this year’s seniors will maintain that record. Mr. Feldberg, our Head Counselor and all the other guidance counselors who have had our seniors for their freshman, sophomore and junior years, wish you the succes and happiness you so richly deserve. Good luck to each and every one! SCIENCE DEPARTMENT The Science Department offers a diversified program for all students, whether they be college bound or not. Here at Weequahic High School, we make available many opportunities for students with varying abilities, interests and goals. In the Freshman Year, students began their study of Science with an activity-centered, “hands-on”, approach to Science with the course called Physical Science. The Sophomore Year introdices the students to Biology or Urban Ecology. Both program inveati-gate the world of living things, with Urban Ecology stressing the topics: Conservation, Pollution and Energy Resource Alternatives. The Junior Year become more rigorous with the study of Chemistry or Honors Biology. Chemistry and Honors Biology are courses designed for the college bound student. Chemistry is a laboratory course and investigates such topics as chemical reactions, acids and bases, atomic structure and problem solving. Honors Biology is designed as a second year Biology course involving a more detailed study of the topics covered in the first year of Biology. Seniors have the option of taking either A. P. Chemistry, Honors Physics or Physics Depending on the students interests and abilities. These courses are designed for the college bound students interested in a career dealing with science or a science related field. Students interested in a technical career may select Science Math or Technology - People - Environment as an elective in either the Junior or Senior Year of high school. Science Math is designed to familiarize students with laboratory techniques and instrumentation. Technology - People • Environment is designed to develop technological literacy. This course is entirely activity - centered. 144 HISTORY The History Department offers students of Weequahic High School a broad spectrum of classes that encompasses the social studies curricula from Afro-American History to psychology and sociology. Our primary concern is to teach young men and young women to think critically for themselves and to arrive at a decision that is based upon fact, and not myth or prejudice. Do not listen to the soothsayer who preaches violence or hatred based upon half truths or innuendoes, but rather examine the facts yourself and reach your own conclusions based upon justice, mercy and understanding of those who think differently than you do. You, the graduates of today, are the citizens of tomorrow and the success or failure of this country is largely in your hands. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical Education involves the physical activities of running, jumping, kicking, throwing batting, pulling, balancing and lifting. Teaching physical education is not unlike teaching in any other area. Its object is to give the greatest possible development to a pupil’s physical powers, habits and character. In accomplishing this we expect that the teacher will exercise iniative, ingenuity, and creative ability. Physical is mandated by the State Department to be part of the education process in each grade of the senior high school. Every pupil must have successfully completed a year in physical education for every year in school. THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT Most of the students at Weequahic High School possess a high level of innate talent and many of the students harbor a sharp artistic sensitivity. In the music department we seek to direct the students to first develop an awareness of their talent and sensitivity and potential. Secondly, after the students become aware of their individuality, the emphasis is put on nurturing the individual to grow intellectually and independently through critical thinking and self-evaluation The third phase is to motivate the students to continue, at some level, an interest and or direct participation in musical performance. To achieve our goals the music department offer a music major program as well as diverse music classes such as music workshop I and 11. chorus, asvanced mixed chorus; instruction in the instrumental families (strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion) band, .arching band and jazz band. Math Department “Minimum basic skills seems to be the center of concern for the Mathematics Department this year It’s more than just Back-to-Basics. It's communication, records, feedback, individualized teaching, and follow-ups. Students arc still required to take a Math exam their their junior year to qualify then for graduation and. if required. 11th year Review for those who need additional instruction. Amidst all this remedial work, courses like Advanced Placement Math (MAP), trigonometry, and geometry are still managing to survive in the curriculum. These are your basic college prep courses. Tutoring is a vital part of the Compensatory education program in the Math Department and usually accompanies courses like General Math and Pre-Algebra Consumer Math is a practical elective offered to grades ten through twelve. In this course, the student learns how to manage money, how to work percentages, discounts, markups. mark-downs, budgeting, banking, and investing. Certainly in this age of the caculator. the study of Math is holding its own, 149 ISO Practical and Fine Arts Department The Practical and Fine Arts Department prepares students for year 2000 in both a practical and an artistic way. The department attempts to provide each student with the preparation, growth experiences and guidance for modern living through an instructional program of the technical, aesthetic, consumer, recreational, occupational, organizational, social, historical and cultural aspects of our society. The department encourages “hands on” activities to provide specific vocational skills and competencies. In conjunction with the career program, advanced courses are offered to strengthen student proficiencies to enter employment. Courses offered are- in Fine Arts: Arts Foundation, Commercial Arts I and II, Studio Art, General Art I and II, Crafts; In Practical Arts: Home Economics-Foods I and II, Clothing I and II, Early Childhood Development I and II, Consumer Homemaking Education, Cooperative Home Economics: In Industrial Arts-Woods I, II, III, Graphic Arts I, II, III, Electronics, Photography, Mechanical Drawing I and II, Architectural Drawing, and Metals I and II. ENGLISH To be understood is the bottom line for all English courses. The number one problem, as Mrs. Staples sees it, is communication. “Our kids have a tough time explaining themselves, speaking and understanding standard English,” Mrs. Staples explains, “To that end, English courses are geared and structured to change poor speech and writing habits — to make the student a better communicator. This task is accomplished through multi-faceted units planned scrupulously by the department’s twenty-two instructors. The department offers in addition to its regular English Courses, honors courses on every level, Journalism, Speech, Drama, and Creative Writing. The most diversified instruction takes place on the senior level, where teachers are busy preparing students for the ruggedness of college study. The most standardized of these is the formidable research paper which every senior must complete to pass English satisfactorily. 1S2 BUSINESS Business as usual in the Business Department means preparing students for the job market, 21st century and before. Many students are in the job market right now. placed with the help of the course Work Experience Orientation Division taught by Mr. Bill McGuinn (see pages 130-135). Students spend half a day on the job and half a day in school, with Mr. McGuinn supervising their movements. This program operates under the heading of “Co-Ed A.M. P.M”. The department feels that every student should be exposed to a course in business, because we all become consumers and can use the experience gained from a business course. The Business department has something for every student. Its courses include: Personal typing. Business Machines, General Business, Business Math, Book and Record Keeping 1 and 11, Vocational Typing I and II, Machine Transaction, Office Practice, Stenography I and II, Business Communication, and Data Processing. Discontinued courses are Distributive Education, Consumer Law, and Consumer Economics. TWO YEARS WISER. AND $15,200 RICHER. A lot of people who start college right after high school discover they’re not ready for it. That’s a good reason to think about serving two years in the Army first. And only the Army offers you a 2-year enlistment. If you join the Veterans’ Educational Assistance Program (VEAP). the money you save for college is matched two-for-one by the government. Then, if you qualify, the Army adds an exclusive bonus of up to $8,000 on top of that. That’s why in just two years in the Army, you could accumulate as much as $15,200 for college. (And up to $20,100 in three years.) So you won’t just be two years older when you start college. You'll be two years wiser. And $15,200 richer.
