The graduation of 1976 is doubly important because while it symbolizes the end of one stage of life and the beginning of another it is also the 200th birthday of our country. This year's graduation, therefore, affords us a special opportunity to reflect not only on the progress of our individual lives, but on our progress as a people, as well. As a people, our history is deeply rooted in this country from its very beginning. In 1776, Black people in America were slaves. Ironically, they gave their labor only to make our country free for others. Black people had no rights in 1776. The stirring words of the Declaration of Independence - We hold these words to be self evident, that all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights and among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness - were not written for Black people. It was not until almost 100 years later, during the time of the Civil W'ar, that Blacks were given the right to be free, legally. From the time Blacks first came to this country up to this year of the 200th birthday, Black people have had to fight and struggle and suffer for rights and privileges that other Americans have naturally enjoyed This fight, this struggle, this suffering is your heritage and your treasure. In this Bicentennial year, make it your commitment to contribute yourself to our people's proud history. Make it your commitment to continue this fight, this struggle against suffering, in every area of your lives. Prejudice, injustice, racism, ignorance are still the enemies, and education is our strongest weapon. Segregation may no longer be the law. but it is still a fact of life in America. Tokenism in the professions, in politics, in the labor unions, in the arts, is a transparent mask through which we see the poverty and degradation in which the majority of our people still live. This is the vision that we must keep to remind ourselves that America has still to keep her promise to the majority of our people. In this Bicentennial year, let us celebrate America's birthday by making a commitment to make her great promise a reality. No other nation has ever had such great dreams for its people. Let the heritage of Black people in America be that they were in the forefront to make those dreams come true. Learn and do as much as you can, all your life, so that you will fulfill your own promise and that of America's as well James Barrett. Jr.
