After four years of work, the time has come for you to leave Weequahic High School and pursue your chosen paths. We have attempted to give you the tools necessary for you to map out a good life. You can be sure that if you apply those principles we have tried to teach you, life will be meaningful to you. We have attempted to show you that, by being a person of color, you will encounter difficulties in life that others will not necessarily face. Too often we as a people succumb to the pressures of our racist society and find ourselves pushed into a corner and readily accepting anything offered us. We somehow become convinced that because of our color we are limited as to what we can do, and consequently, we give up too easily. Many of our people have proven their greatness in all walks of life. You are not made of anything less than a DuBois, a King, a Malcolm X, an Andre Watts, a Muhammad Ali, a Carver, a Mary Bethune, and many more. What made them great was not so much their intellect, but their defined purpose in life. They all had goals and, although they met difficulties, they determinedly conquered them. You, too, can achieve this same greatness, or even exceed it, by defining what it is you want out of life, and then pursuing it with all of your strength. May you know happiness and success throughout your life. James Barrett, Jr.
