THERSEA MONTAGUE 106 Weequahic students are fortunate to have such patient, diligent women working in our cafeteria. CAFETERIA? Without them we would never have gotten the chance to eat so many interesting foods. FOOD?? Therefore, we take this opportunity to salute the cafeteria staff from the bottom of our indigestion to the top of our Excedrin headache number 4, 567. W O r e r Seriously, however, we would like to thank the cafeteria workers and the custodians because they have put up with a lot, the inferior working conditions and the attitudacious minds of the students. Their job was merely to serve us food. They were not obligated to be cordial; but they were. When thinking about Weequahic, let us not forget the cafeteria workers. Even though we've often met their smiles with a cutting remark, let's not leave without thanking them for putting up with us, and for a job well done. sports THANKSGIVING DAY. 1970 WEEQUAHIC SCALPS SOUTH SIDE, 24-12 In sports, the climax of our four years at Wccquahic had to be the South Side game. It was the Indians' first victory over our neighborhood rivals since the days when most of the Class of '71 was still in diapers. Four touchdown passes by quarterback Thurman Skipper” Jones sparked the come-from-behind triumph. We won't forget a lot of other outstanding achievements, cither: cross country and track championships led by Clint McDonald and Barry Mason, the city tennis championship dominated by Tom Garrett, and the City League football title in 1967 and 1968. The player who best represents the Orange and Black Power of Wccquahic '71 was Ronald Howard, co-captain of the football, baseball, and basketball teams. A 5'6 midget in a world of giants, Ronnie used his great speed, dexterity and determination to become a valuable two-way performer on the gridiron and an indispensable ballhawking playmaker on the basketball court. Bui sports ai Weequahic wasn't all heroes and championships. The athletic program has always tried to foster good sportsmanship to go along with the will to win, the value of discipline to go along with zealous spirit, and a sound mind to go along with a sound body. The most important moment in an athlete's life may not be the City League title or a win over South Side. It may be learning how to gracefully accept a particularly heartbreaking defeat. Or it may be that moment in a dreary, grinding practice session when a runner or a swimmer reaches into the depths of his being -of his soulful soul - for that extra adrenalin and the ability to tolerate intolerable pain. And let’s not forget to give a pat on the back to ourselves, the jammin fans, especially those fans who supported our athletes as managers, twirlcrs, cheerleaders and the marching band. We also knew the thrills of victory as well as the agonies of defeat. Finally, we can’t leave without remembering our loyal and dedicated coaches, varsity and jayvee, old and young, black and white, sometimes red in the face or green with envy, but never yellow, and always true blue to the Orange and Brown. football TRI-CAPTAINS Nate Dancy Gilbert Jenkins COACHES: Seigel Adams Hart Mark Moore Thurman Jones ERNEST JACKSON DENNIS RICHARDSON BRUCE BROWN TYRONE GAUSE RAYMOND OXNER LAMONT KING 112 RONNIE HOWARD ELWOOD CLARK DARRYL Me MURRAY RICHARD BRACEY EDWARD GARVIN GARY RANDALL DAVID CRAWFORD RALPH DARKNESS ALGERNON FLOWERS GEORGE GILLIAM 113 INSTRUCTOR - MR. We have finally received our parole papers from the great jail on the hill known as Weequahic High School. We are free, and no longer compelled to travel the well-guarded hallways of our alma mater. Never again will anyone be sentenced to detention in Mr. Mac’s office. During the years of 1967 through 1969, Mr. William Monprode was our principal (warden). We should all have a vivid memory of our freshman and sophomore years, because they were truly Jamming years. At that time the Y was the thing. If you wanted to dig and be dug you hung at the Y. 138 Do you remember the frats and sororities: the O's. the Rho Kappa Rho, the Lambda Kappa Rho, the Omicrons, the Betas, Zetas, and all the other Greeks? It was also in our freshman year that Weequahic was caught up in revolution - THE BOYCOTT of 1968 - the boycott in which Weequahic students tried to let Newark know that we were not going to accept an education that was totally Irrelevant to our lives. After this mild taste of revolution our dress-code was abolished and Swahili and Afro-American History became a part of our curriculum. We are still trying to make Newark aware of our needs. 139 At the same time Weequahic was undergoing its transition, the entire country was at a point where it realized that the old priorities and policies could no longer remain unchanged. Tragically four great men who spoke in favor of change were assassinated: Martin L. King. John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and Malcolm X. There was and still is a war raging in Southeast Asia, a war which takes the lives of countless human beings daily, a war that is illegal under the Constitution of the United States, and unjust under the Constitution of Human Rights. Since at least 1967 America has been forced to take a cold, hard look at herself. America, the alleged epitome of democracy, still has not enforced desegregation orders which the Supreme Court issued in 1954. America, the seat of democracy. Is the place where Lester Maddox was allowed to distribute (in Washington, D. C.) pick-ax handles which he had used on black people in Georgia who tried to eat in his restaurant. America. the land which honors great accomplishment, is the same country in which a black man was stripped of a championship he won for refusal to join the U.S. Army. Muham-med All honestly believed that fighting and killing was unjust and wrong. America -the land of the free and the home of the brave. 141 As sophomores we were really together. Our class was the first to have a sophomore bus ride. Who can forget Rockaway Beach? We went there as a class twice. That’s the place where we all played in the Atlantic Ocean with clothes on; the trip where everybody was in couples: Reggie and Al. Allison and Karen. Derek and Ronald. Barbara and Paulette ... Both the sophomore and junior bus rides can be filed under T for jamming. At the end of our sophomore year Mr. Monprode, who came to nearly all of Wee-quahic’s football games and dances, who was understanding and willing to get involved, left. Our sophomore year was also the last year that we had school without an unexpected winter vacation which began on February 1! 142 Junior year arrived! The first thing we hear is Hi, folks! Mr. Charles Brodsky is our new principal. With compliments on the merits of Weequahic and words of praise for the fashion sense of its students, Mr. Brodsky obtained a very unique reputation (smile). He came to Weequahic unaware of our independent nature and jamming spirit. However, he became quickly enlightened when he decided to tell us that we couldn't have a talent show. So many petitions were signed it's a wonder we didn't develop writer's cramp. We got our point across and had the talent show. It wasn't as spectacular as the shows we had in our freshman and sophomore years but at least we proved we could do it. Stop whatever you arc doing; eating, rapping, taking a rest - just stop! We are having another fire drill. The fire alarm has gotten to the point where it is almost meaningless to Weequahic students. If the weather is fine, everyone will rush outside; if it's raining, no one moves. At this rate Weequahic High School will become an up-to-date version of The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Black is Beautiful and it's so beautiful to be black. When Kenneth Gibson was elected Mayor of Newark a tide of black consciousness flowed over black people in Newark. Gibson's campaign was a campaign of the people. He was looked upon as a symbol of unity, brotherhood and power. On him the people of Newark placed the burden of Newark's many problems: high crime, infant mortality and venereal disease rates, widespread drug abuse, an ineffective educational system, racial antagonism and a crisis of public confidence In Mayor Gibson's words, When you talk about modem day urban problems, you're talking about Newark. At the onset of our final year at Weequahic many of us were faced with the difficult task of deciding whether or not we wanted to further our education, and if so. which school would best suit us. In the beginning of our senior year, we, as college-bound students could frequently be found in room 311 with either Mrs. Litzky or Mr. La Penna, our two able college guidance counselors. After sending out all our applications and just meeting the deadlines, we were able to relax a little and concentrate on activities which involved Weequahic and the present rather than those which concerned our future lives. Many others of us looked forward to jobs, secretarial or technical schools, military service, or marriage. In our senior year we had many memorable moments, both good and bad. There was the Senior Spook, where many of us didn’t have to try hard to look horrible - it just came naturally. But there were also some very original outfits which only proved further the great ingenuity of the class of 71. 146 In sports, who will ever forget our first Thanksgiving Day game win since we’d been here? And to top it off, we beat our bitter rivals. South Side. But will we ever forget that our basketball team that year lost only five games and three of those losses were to South Side? On the whole though, during our years here sports achievements have been above average and we would give any opponent a difficult time. 147 But soon there had to come something to jolt our feeling of a calm senior year (Why we even had fewer false fire alarms; only about once a day). The Board of Education attempted to strip the contract that the teachers, aides and clerks had won through a three week strike in 1970, thus forcing many members of the Newark Teacher's Union to strike. The 1971 annual Newark teacher's strike was the longest one in a major city. During the strike our principal suffered through an appendectomy. U8 We were able to do many things as the strike progressed because we had so much time to do It in. What we weren't able to do though was obtain the education which we sorely needed. We. as students were the ones who were hurt most by the strike. It crippled us so greatly that it was to leave irreparable damage. Most students reached the point where they didn't care what happened anymore. Apathy can do more damage to a human being than anything else. ALL-PRO Sed Chife 1 -— SSI«MCM FULL In the outside world much change and revolution came about also. In sports, can anyone ever forget the great fight? No, not the McClendon-Zois fight; the Frazier-Ali fight. This fight was over something a little better than a man, it was over millions of dollars and the heavyweight championship title of the world. Although Frazier won, technically, many thought it a draw. And don’t leave out the Mets. Remember how they shocked the world by winning the World Series? Another spectacular team was the Knicks who won the NBA Championship. Outside of sports though much change was taking place in our society. Old values were being uprooted aqd replaced by new ones. New York changed its out-of-place-in-today’s-society laws and legalized abortion. Abortion has become so commonplace that it is even advertised in newspapers. A law was also passed by Congress which lowered the voting age to eighteen. Our class will now be able to votcTor the next President of the United States. In New Jersey too, change came about. Besides changing governors, let's not forget that in our senior year New Jersey began its first lottery system. Now one can buy a fifty-cent ticket that could possibly be worth thousands of dollars. We, the class of 1971 have seen many startling events occur during our years as high school students. Events such as man’s venture to the moon, the guilty verdicts of the Manson and Calley trials, the new lottery system for the military draft, and the imprisonment of black militant Angela Davis. We also as a class have had many exciting and memorable moments. Can we ever forget how we anxiously awaited graduation. prom night, and the Senior Picnic? But as we look back in retrospect on our high school years, there will always stand out in our memory moments of both happiness and sadness, sweetness and bitterness and glory and defeat. We are a class that grew up in times of great change and revolution. But we managed to survive these times and emerge as promising leaders of tomorrow's world. I'll try when my Jones comes down. Who? The members are very dedicated, sincere, hard-working students striving to have a good yearbook. Although the teachers’ strike has affected our education, it hasn't stopped the members from working on the yearbook. Most of tire work was done at the home of the editor. Jay Patterson. Without his cooperation and the assistance of Mr. James Lowenstein, we would never have gotten the yearbook out by the required deadlines.
