Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1969 volume:

I Beauty was selected as the theme of this year’s Legend because it has been a part of many of our experiences at Weequahic High School. One witnesses it when a teacher and a student work together and come to understand one another. For there is beauty in understanding. One feels it at the football games, where the excitement of victor)' is so overwhelming. For victory is beautiful. One can’t miss it in the face of a student who has just received a letter of acceptance or a great report card. For there is beauty in success. Beauty is felt in our corridors where there is such vital motion. For motion is beautiful. So is solitude . . . and learning . . . and pride. The staff of the 1969 legend sincerely hopes that the yearbook will be a lasting reminder to each senior of the beauty that we were . . . and are. Inith grateful appreciation On July 12, 1068 the Weequahic High School family was stunned by the death of Sadie Z. Rous, history teacher and guidance counselor. An inspirational teacher, all but one semester of her thirty-five year career was spent at Weequahic. Two generations have studied under her high, exacting standards. .Sirs. Rous had an uncomplicated philosophy: You have to love the students and your subject. No one should go on teaching unless he loves it. She lived up to this philosophy. Early each morning, Mrs. Rous would be found seated at her desk, ready to help any student. She would at times invite to her home students who might be unable to see her during the day. For thirty years. Mrs. Rous carried on a tradition that will be remembered at Weequahic. She would find two or three troubled students, not necessarily her own. ami help them with their problems. Giving freely of her lime, Mrs. Rous helped them renew their interest in school. Mrs. Rous's interest in students extended beyond graduation. Through active correspondence, she followed their careers through college and into adult life. In 1%2 she wrote to the Weequahic alumni, requesting funds for a scholarship program. Through her efforts, a competitive scholarship program was established. The greatest tribute that we can pay to Mrs. Rous is to continue and augment this commendable program. We will all miss Mrs. Rous. 4 Ahmimstrati nn anb Jfarultu prinriyal« Hleesagc HI y sincere congratulations and best wishes to the members of the Weequahic High School Class of 1969. With the help of the education you have earned in our school, may your future lives be filled with truth, beauty, and happiness. 6 7 CONSTANCE D.
