DR. BENJAMIN EPSTEIN The theme of the Legend of the Class of June, 1967, is Reflections . To be able to look back is a mark of coming of age—of reaching adult maturity. It is not easy to learn that it is always what happened in the past that de termines what the future will be like. Each one of you will become acutely aware that what you did in your classes, the books that you read in your spare time, the friends that you made, the discussions that you held, the attitudes that you developed, will all become tools with which you create your future. That future is one of great uncertainty at this moment. In the years that follow away from Weequahic, you will have the possibility of creating a thrilling new world. Man is at the threshold of curing almost any disease, of eradicating poverty, of ending war for all time, of exploring the vastness of space, of creating a life in which all men live in equality, dignity and decency. It is equally possible that man may waste this glorious opportunity and exchange it for one of strife and self-destruction. It is your generation that will, in the final analysis, have to decide which it will be, and then make it come true. When you reflect about the past, do it not merely for a moment's sentimental nostalgia. Think rather about where we go from here. Benjamin Epstein. Principal 8
