Roberta Williams Bert, as her close friends know her, spends much of her time reading, listening to records, and visiting friends. During her stay at Wcequahic, she was secretary of various classes. Roberta, who is quite ambitious, often says, 'To be a success you must work hard. Because of her deep interest for the sick and unfortunate she hopes to become a nurse. Linda Yoskowitz Being a girl of many talents, Linda's interests vary from bowling to dancing to horseback riding. Besides being an active member of the Y, Pinky adores Italian food, Broadway shows, and Johnny Mathis. After graduation Linda hopes to travel throughout the country. Seymour Yoskowitz Seymour is a sports lover. He was a member of the soccer team for three years and a participant in the 4B-4A basketball game. Seymour works at Valley Fair and in his spare time plays football near his home. His favorite subject is Hebrew with Mr. Chasen. Roger Richard Rossics Roger is a newcomer to Wee-quahic. (That's why he's back here with the Y's.) He previously attended Sayrcvillc High School where he was a member of their outstanding baseball team. Roger likes driving, but thinks women drivers are a menace on the road. Roger looks forward to his gradu-tion day and has bright hopes for the future. Ruth W. El Ruthie keeps her slim figure by participating in sports and by dancing. She was an active member of the chorus and took part in many asscmbly programs. Ruth also enjoys sewing She hopes that the future will bring her happiness and success. Joseph L. Simpson, Jr. Sportsmindcd Jose was an active participant in indoor and outdoor track, football, and swimming. Jazz, Latin, and the mambo arc among his favorites. Jose's strange pet peeve is girls. He hopes to become a success someday. 4A Class History We are now ac a crucial point in our lives. We can look forward to what will be after graduation: college, service, or the business world. And we can look back. The past holds memories both happy and sad. We remember that cold February morning when nervous and frightened, we opened the large door on Chancellor Avenue for the first time. We were soon joined by new classmates from the junior high schools in the city. These two years served as an orientation period for us, making new friends, and getting acclimated to the school around us. Our junior year brought the excitement of elections. Jay Silverstcin was elected president. His abilities led to his re-election for the remainder of our high school years. The other positions have been filled by various capable people. Our first class social event was the 3B picnic; it was a huge success. South Mountain Reservation was left an absolute mess. In 3A we had our Junior Frolics, a square dance which in everyone’s opinion was just great. On a ■Misty Saturday night the 4B's gathered in the lower gymnasium for an unforgettable evening at the Hop. Farewell to you Senior As led to our pledge — to do our very utmost to set an example of leadership and respect to the rest of the school. Now the time has come for us to part and bid adieu. The memories of our prom, Torch Day, and graduation will be ours forever through the pages of this Legend. Rosalind Kaplan Susan Bain MEMORIES 25 FACULTY The Latin word education literally means leading out of. To us it means leading out of ignorance. Who are the catalysts, the individuals who give this word meaning? They are the teachers, who through their guidance, knowledge, and ability to convey this knowledge, lead the youth of all nations out of the darkness and mystery of ignorance. The future of this generation lies in the able hands of our teachers. May the torch of their constant perseverence and continued guidance light the way for future Weequahic citizens. Special thanks to our senior advisor, Mrs. Lillian Margulies. 4 F ore word This Legend is a conscientious endeavor to present an accurate account of our four years at Wecquahic. There are no boundaries to confine its spirit. Our creativity illustrates the essence of this spirit in free and honest exposition. In this memoir of our high school years, we have tried to capture the sentiments of the class of June 1963. We have presented the circumstances as we have experienced them, depicting our every mood. We arc reminiscing — not predicting; describing — not modifying; correlating ourselves — not others. Tkr, ore.d cr? £d ucotoh This is a time to look upon our four years together as a class. The purpose of this History is to record these moments as they actually were. Unfortunately pictures cannot illustrate the whole story of these years of our maturing. Individual memories arc what really constitute a CLASS HISTORY. WE ARE ALL STUDENTS 8 We left our childhood. This was a small class and the first to enter Weequahic in the new decade. This was a period of great transition because the Newark school system was changing from semi-annual to annual promotion. As it turned out, the Class of January, 1964, was to be the last class graduated in midyear. Because of this dubious distinction, many members of the Class accelerated so that they would gradduate in cither June or August of 1963. By the time they reached their senior year, the Class of January, 1964, was virtually non-existent; therefore, they could not have any activities of their own. Despite this handicap, the Class, a spunky, close-knit group, kept right on going. When they graduate, they will end a tradition in Weequahic High School — that of mid-term graduation.
