Chief Justice David E. Weingast Principal It is a tribute to the editors of the Legend that they have chosen justice as the theme for this yearbook. Of all man’s aspirations over the years, the concept of justice has been among the foremost. When we contemplate the dimensions of injustice in our world, we realize that the struggle for a decent society must be waged more strongly than ever. Justice, of course, is a word, an abstraction. Everybody says he believes in it. Hut we know that concepts of justice vary from land to land, and even within the Ixmlers of a nation. No country' on earth has achieved the ideal. And in some countries, gross violations of justice arc the general rule. In our American democracy we have steadily reduced the nmnl or of unfair practices. Now, more than ever l efore in our history, the American people are enjoying the reality of justice. Though pockets of evil practices remain, they arc being eliminated. This trend may from time to time he arrested, hut its long, forward movement will continue. In our relations with other nations, the United States has Ivecome a symbol of justice. Every people in the world knows that our government covets neither territory' nor resources belonging to others; that the United States believes in the peaceful settlement of international differences; that fair and honorable dealings arc part of our national code. Hut the world, nevertheless, is plagued with injustice. Some peoples have yet to sample the meaning of civil liberties. Some peoples have 'ct to learn the meaning of economic freedom — the right to a job of one’s choice at a decent wage. Some nations still use strong-arm methods against other countries. Injustice is still one of the ugly facts of life in our time. As each of you goes forward to make his place in the world, keep alive your interest in this problem. Don’t let your preoccupation with school or business or profession dim the zeal that animates you today. Don’t let cynicism or disappointment with our imperfect world weaken your determination to improve our society. If all of us. everywhere in the world, work together, we can achieve our great aim — justice under law. We can have it at home; we can haw it among nations. It is up to you and to the young people of all countries. Wim 6
