Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1950 volume:

c7Otew0td The tears and the laughter, the work and the fun, the hopes and the pride of our high sehool career are hound together in this book of memories. It is as cherished as the family album, as personal as our diary, and as important to us as a souvenir of our first dance. On its pages we portray the lighter side of our high school life; hut beneath the frivolity there is a seriousness of purpose, a realization of the importance of these years, an expectancy of success in the future. We are the generation of hope—hope for the restoration of peace to mankind. Vi e arc the generation of understanding—understanding gained through knowledge of the complexities of our nature. And we are the generation of incredible power—power granted a shaken world through science. We have an inherited obligation to fulfill the wants of a people starved for peace and security. Vl'c have a personal obligation to achieve success as human heings. With the cautious warnings of our forefathers, with the knowledge and sympathy acquired through education, and with the keen foresight of our leaders, we shall reach these goals. We toast our future in the modern era: Of life immense in passion, pulse, and power, Cheerful, for freest action form'd under the laics divine. The Modern Man I sing. I? alt ff hitman Aru e Mi.mz It is with gincorc appreciation and affection that the Clagg of January, 1950, dedicateg its hook of mcnioricg to Mm. Hilda Lutzke. Her undergtanding, her sympathy, and her capable guidance have helped to make those memories pleasant. We are proud to have shared our high school years with such an inspiring and true friend, our class adviser. zfli Ja J utz e dedication To the Graduate of January 1950: Precious goods conic in small packages. Hence the size of the present class. I hope that from your midst will nevertheless spring a famous poet, a useful politician, a reformer of bchop. plenty of successful businessmen and efficient housewives, a pitcher who never allows a hit, and a hundred per cent of good citizens. The trip some of us took to the Cnitcd Nations at Flushing Meadows was a memorable event. A student delegation met President Truman at the height of his campaign and this may have inspired our 0. It. A. to the extent that at our next election, 0. B. A. candidates Barry Kolton and Elaine Kaplan made campaign speeches in school assemblies. Leading the class in our junior year was president Norman Krueger. The Freedom Train, with its significant documents of history, arrived in Newark this term. Many of us were excused from school to view the display. Harry Kolton and Flaine Kaplan, our representatives from Weequahic, attended an Interscholasiic Council to promote friendly relations among Newark schools. Horace Mingled with happier memories of high school is a day important to our growth toward maturity, a day of realization of the sorrows that come in the wake of war. It was a day of sadness and yet great honor. On May 29, 1949, a Memorial Day Program was dedicated to the memory of Wccquahic High School students and graduates who gave their lives to their country during World W ar 11. Reverend Northwood delivered a prayer for the dead to the hushed assemblage. The mood of the audience was tuned to the solemnity of the day as selections including “Invictus” and “Choral Ode” were sung by the glee club. After other ceremonies, guests and parents of the war dead proceeded to the front corridor. Amidst a crowd immersed in the depths of their memories, Dr. John Herron delivered an address as he unveiled the bronze tablet of dedication. The names of W eequahic's war heroes shone forth as the benediction w'as delivered. After a moment of silent prayer, guests were invited to visit the memorial trees and plaques in the Stadium. W’e of the graduating class of 1950 were proud to have witnessed this program and pay homage to the valiant ones. 58 Ajoe.se Mi.ntz I 'i •'.vlVA' Ot A cov c v jK AV.Ot fr v ESTHER G.OLDMAN BAND AND ORCHESTRA CALUMET STAFF GLEE CLUB PROM COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN TWIRLERS AND CHEERLEADER 4A COUNCIL AND O. BASEBALL: Of Wccquahic's baseball nine, under the direction of Charles Schneider, four lettermen are among the graduates. Barry Kolton. who performed very capably at first base on both the defense and offense, has been a varsity member for two years. Norman Krueger, a popular player on playground teams, will be missing from this year's pitching staff. Don Kaufman has proved to he an effective hurler in his two years of twirling, and Fred (Wliitey) Coi l right played fine hall both behind and along side of home plate. BASKETBALL: Though the Indian's cage squad failed to retain its City League championship, Coach Henry Donn has high hopes for his charges this year, despite the graduation of Marty Wcicli, one of the team's stellar performers and a fine player to have under the backboards. CROSS-COUNTRY AND TRACK: Our cross-country and track teams hit the cinder path last year with a fair amount of success. Coaches William Rose and William Ilofer have been successful in bringing their squads along. The only cross-country Ictterman to don the cap and gown is Sid Handler who captained the team in bis final year. Leaving the track squad arc Sandy Goldberg, who turned in sterling performances in the 100-vard and 200-yard dashes and the pole vault events, and Herman ’’Babe Berg, who developed fast at the close of the season in the javelin throw and the high hurdle events. SWIMMING: The swimming team, coached by “Skippy” Stein, which placed second in The City Meet during the 1918-19 season, was aided greatly by the services of Larry Tomasula. He excelled in the 100-yard backstroke and the 120-yard medley relay, winning letters in both his years on the team. Sandy Simon gave a creditable showing as a 220-yard free styler, besides working at the manager's post during the 1917-1918 campaign. Klvin Zicdcr proved to be one of the Indian's top 40-yard frecstylcrs. Frank Dondcrshinc earned his “W by participating in the freestyle relay and handling chores. By earning a letter in the 100-yard backstroke, Sheldon Saltier proved his ability. BOXING AND FENCING: Wcequahic’s Golden Glove tournaments, directed by Charles Schneider, produced many promising pugilists. A1 Klein won all three bouts in which he participated. Don Dvorin, Dave Bornstein, Neil Feins, Joel Rand, and Shelley Weinstein all received letters for their victories. Our fencing team, coached by Harry Boutsakaris, placed third in the state in 1917, winning ten and losing only one duel in city competition. Marvin Stoloff helped greatly in attaining this record. FOOTBALL: The gridiron eleven was coached by Lou Stammelman who replaced Lou “Bucky Harris in 1919. The spirit, hustle, and potential power of the squad gave every indication of a long-awaited improvement in Wcequahic's football team. Missing from next year’s team will be Sandy Goldberg, who played both guard and fullback. As the team's co-captain he earned his letter for his fine back field work. Jack Licbcrman performed capably at a halfback post and starred as the team's extra-point kicker. Gerry Safier captained the squad and switched from his 1918 quarterback position to end in 1919 to score the team's first two touchdowns of the season. (Out z iaJium The Kickoff. Our Coaches. A fanfare of trumpets, a thunderclap of drums, and the Orange and Brown stepped out on the field. Amid the brassy blare and thrills of another football season, Weequahic's colors came to a pause. On October the fifteenth, 1949, Untermann Stadium was solemnly dedicated, dedicated not only to the distinguished judge and citizen after whom it is named, but dedicated to and hallowed by those of Weequahic who had given their lives in the battle for freedom. Just eighteen months before, the site of the proud stadium was a wind-blown, rock-studded sand lot. But on the first Saturday of the autumn season of 1949, an overflowing crowd of six thousand exuberant spectators pressed into the grandstands as the familiar figure of Principal Herzberg officially opened the stadium by making the season's opening kickoff. The multitude watched as the gridiron warriors trampled upon the virgin turf; the autumn sun splashed brightly in the stands; and the bands and cheerleaders performed studied routines. This event signified the start of a new era for Weequahic athletics in Newark's newest and finest sports center. 1 o the thousands who were there, to our classmates both on the playing field and in the stands, went the pride of being part of the moment, part of the thrills and groans, victories and defeats of Weequahic's new addition to the tribal grounds. N SrEPH JEl D NIS 'ponecv id In preparing the Legend, the Class of June 1950 has tried to condense four years of work, fun, and knowledge into a few words and pictures. Naturally, this book cannot substitute for the actual experiences we shared. If this Legend supplies any pleasant memories in years to come it will justify its existence. May it serve as a common bond to keep us as close in spirit in the future as we have been in fact for the past four years. 2 yQHH fon DecUc4tio t The French have a word for it; the Spanish do; the Romans also; every civilized people has had some word or phrase of graceful gratitude. Be it merci, muchas gracias, gratiae, or simply thank you, they all only partly express our feelings for you, Miss Johnston. Our debt is so overwhelming that mere words are not adequate to tell what is 'in our hearts. Only by our actions can we try, as we have tried, to fulfill your hopes for us. For the multitude of deeds you have done in our behalf; for your kind assistance and guidance; for all of that and much more, the Class of June, 1950, gratefully and respectfully dedicates its Yearbook to you. Gilbert Henoch 45 1947 The year 1946 saw the many students that were to make up one of the largest graduating classes of Weequahic High School scattered far and wide. The Weequahic Annex, Madison Junior High, and many adjoining towns contributed members to our final class of 1950. Mr. Coleman left the Annex in 1947 and was succeeded by Mr. Landolphi. The two chief entertainment delights of our freshman year were the celebrated Talent Show and the last Music Revue. Students throughout both schools were busy learning about their future occupations. Madisonites were feverishly rehearsing the comedy, Now That April's Here. Midst the clamoring of pupils and the squirting of water pistols, the prodigious class of 1950 embarked upon their voyage to the main building. 1948 Unlike most sophomore classes, our class entered the main building aided by the little orange booklets— we knew all about those elevator passes and the confusing fourth floor. Lucky individuals that we were, certain privileges were eliminated: double lunch, seven period day, and double gym. We were fortunate enough to see newly painted rooms and to hear soft music in the lunchroom. Our sophomore year saw the ushering in of two new sports— fencing and swimming. Both teams had extremely successful seasons. Our undaunted determination to learn showed itself as we bravely trudged through the great blizzard of '47. This was the year many of us had to run to classes in Chancellor because of the crowded conditions in our school. At the term's end all members of the class of 1950 were thinking of the score—two down and two to go. 1949 This was the year of the Freedom Train, with its significant historical documents which many of our classmates viewed. We fielded a fine aggregation of football players whose most notable achievement was consistency in trying. O. B. A. candidates made campaign speeches for the first time in our Junior year and academically, our class showed a great deal of promise. Two outstanding assembly programs this year were the General Motors Program and Harold Russell's encouraging message. We were all looking impatiently and enthusiastically forward— to the September term when we would take our places as seniors and leaders of the school. 1950 We finally made it!! We were now proud seniors! In the elections, which were so important to all of us, we returned the capable officers whom we had chosen in our junior year, and we also contributed five members to the O. B. A. Council. As seniors we all enjoyed ourselves immensely at the long awaited 4B-4A Hop. The world was anxious about the hydrogen bomb while the chemistry classes were worried about the effects of the pleasant smelling hydrogen sulphide. Two way stair traffic, a water shortage, and the tasks that usually confront seniors were the chief problems at hand. By virtue of a change in our dismissal time, from twenty-five to three to two-thirty, we missed thirteen hours, or more than two school days in our senior year. We were all proud of the fact that during our last year the school was evaluated and not found wanting. We of the class of June 1950 sincerely hope that the same judgment is passed upon us. 46 NORMA LEVINE 'rtyoiKVUMMl MISS MAYNARD Where's your excuse? The air was electric with excitement. The triumphant song of defiance rang out, Now the time has come for us to march, and rise against the 4B class. Crowds gathered in the halls. Worried faces. Word came from higher authority. Keep moving—Keep moving. The small knots of insurgents broke up but the tension was still there. Suddenly the word was flashed. Over the mysterious grapevine it came, Mass meeting at two-thirty. Pass it on. Angry signs of defiance were scribbled on walls. Somebody shouted, Traitor! There were screams— Hang Finn! He's a tool of the 4B's. Burn him alive. Secret meetings of the high command were held—in grimy restaurants far from the power of authorities. Petitions were drawn up. Letters of protest were written. There was a brief cessation of hostilities. Terse official communiques were issued. There will be NO mass meeting. I repeat. There will be NO mass meeting.—MJH There will be a meeting in the auditorium at two-thirty-five. (signed) H. J. And so they gathered. Grim faces. Angry mutterings. All 4B's out of the auditorium—All out.—You there in the back, get out! This is a private meeting. The 0. B. A. Council has just announced it will hold a 4A Hop. 66 Oh, nuts—no revolution. LIBRARY PUYUKPmTKlI USHERING STAFF 68 TOP TEN COMMENCEMENT COMMITTEES SAGAMORES 69 44 Perhaps you expect a Will here. This is the place for it. But forgive us, dear people. We're not leaving anything tangible. We'd like to tell you instead what we're taking with us, cargo too important in our lives to be left behind. We take with us the appalling sense of smallness that we felt as we first entered the school as sophomores. We take with us the gradual maturing and moulding of our characters through our high school days. We take with us many scenes from about the school: the milling crowds rushing across the avenue to the various eateries, the long line of students tugging at their lockers on a frigid December day, the turbulence which was aroused in our hearts the first times we viewed the test tubes and sundry mechanisms of the laboratories, the anguished laments of the secretarial students as they cracked their nails on typewriters, and the thousand warning, endearing, and quizzical looks we received as we traversed the halls between classes. We also take with us something less material and yet upon contemplation something more important. We take with us a sense of being cared for, a sense of security. The security of interested teachers, the security of careful guidance, and the security of the building itself. Although it may seem that we have lost these things, that the watching hand that has led us and eased our minds as we advanced in Weequahic is of the past, in reality this sense of security we have received has so permeated us that it has been blended into our being and, as a result, has left us more mature and, we hope, more prudent. We take with us too, our records, disciplinary as well as scholastic. We have made them and they will give specific evidence to our colleges and our employers of the influence that Weequahic has had upon us. To the class of January, 1951 we leave but one thing: the hope that they will be as heavily laden with stimulating memories of Weequahic as we are on this happy day of graduation. 72 1950 was a woman's year. In politics, art, business, and world shattering headlines, women took the lead. At Weequahic, too, the gentler sex made their marks. The girls who were outstanding in athletics and have won their letters by making 1,000 points are: Arlene Anker, Selma Blatt, Enid Braker, Frances Bregman, Jaclyn Drazin, Dorothy Ginsky, Rita Gottfried, Golda Harad, Fleurette Katz, Marilyn Klass, Barbara Klein, Helen Kother, Janet Platoff, Geraldine Salomon, Molly Schwartz, Gloria Sklaw, Cynthia Stark, and Elizabeth Wilburne. Special recognition was given to Ann Lew, Jane Schenk, Adele Schoen-bach, Bernice Soroka, and Marlene Susskind for earning 1,500 points. Each of these girls was presented with a pin. To these pupils go our congratulations for having shown their athletic ability, and sportsmanship, during their four years at Weequahic. Sfxnti- FOOTBALL Among the graduating lettermen whose fighting spirit will long be remembered by the class is Herb Akelaitis, who was the stalwart of the 1948 Weequahic line. His defensive play as a backer-up constantly warranted praise. Holding down the center slot during the 1949 season was Lenny Quint, who performed well on both the offense and defense. Guard Henry ''Moose Fleischer, although hampered by a knee injury, excelled in tackling and was a blocking back on the offense. Playing at the other guard position was Richie Stanco, whose all-around play deserves recognition. Holding down the end slots were Howie Rosenthal and Alvin Epstein, the former noted for his excellent pass receiving and the latter for his versatility, having played also at center during the latter part of the season. BASKETBALL Our class contributed many sportsmen to the basketball squad. Wes Keefer, an effective board man, played well at his pivot post and was a constant scoring threat to all teams. His outstanding play was recognized when he was placed on the all city five. John Postol, another member of our class, was a high scorer and his deceptive passing and shooting added much to the success of the 49-50 season. These two boys will long be remembered as a unbeatable one-two punch. Mel Nocks, Jerry Finn, and Howie Watenmaker rounded out a fine squad. TRACK This year's contingent of graduating lettermen numbers eight. The captain is Dave Greenblatt who is known to his friends as the green flash . If you have ever seen Dave on the track, you can well understand why. While only a sophomore, Dave was entered in the broad jump and the 75 yard dash in the city meet. He finished third in the dash and fourth in the broad jump. In his junior and senior years, Dave devoted his time exclusively to the track events where he won many timely victories in the 440. Right along side of Dave are some fine running mates: Ivan Krafchick, who hurdled in fine style. Norm Pokras, who won his letter competing in the broad jump and dashes, Vic Thomas, whose forte was in the field events, and Sandy Rever, who ran in the distance races. The strong lungs of the group belong to Fred Stark, who competed in the cross-country meets. Boys who were of valuable assistance to the team are Howie Silver and Stan Lacht-man, hurdles, and Sy Feldman and Dick Skin-der, dashes. BASEBALL Under the direction of Mr. Schneider our baseball nine enjoyed a successful season. John Postol and Bob Poznak each contributed to the effectiveness of the 49-50 season. Frank Scanniello, first baseman, who performed very effectively both offensively and defensively, has been a varsity member for three years. Howie Rosenthal's hard slugging ability at the plate and in the field earned him much recognition and respect from the crowds. SWIMMING TEAM Our class witnessed the first varsity swimming team in Weequahic's history. In 1949 we finished second in the City Meet, losing by only four points. The mermen of our class are Ricky Berns, Richie Cohn, Frank Glasgall, Barry Granick, Arnie Lambek, and Gerry Pop-ick. These boys comprised the core of the team and splashed in ahead of the opposition to carry away many meets. BOXING Another Indian bites the dust, as his victorious adversary dances gingerly over him. This scene is re-enacted every year, on April 1, in the boys' Gym. Since its inauguration, the boxing tournament has become one of Weequahic's most exciting sports events. This year's graduating pugilists are headed by Lennie Quint, who has earned letters in both of his contests, his first a well-earned draw with a much bigger boy and his second, a hard fought win over Sandy Rever. The other boys are Stan Rifkind, a clever lightweight, Ted Kurtz, a hard punching welterweight, and George Harris and Ivan Krafchick, both fine middleweights. FENCING George Harris remains as the last member of our illustrious fencing team which captured third place in the state tournament in 1948. That was a very good record considering the fact that it was our first year in organized competition. George chalked up 8 wins against only 2 losses. These wins were recorded against such top flight teams as Barringer, Bloomfield, and South Side. 75 Irwin Binder Ted Kurtz Bob Poznak Howie Rosenthal Frank Scanniello Paul Ehrlich Dave Greenblatt Harvey Bell Sandy Rever Sandy Hyatt Vic Thomas Howie Silver Richie Skinder Stan Lachtman Ivan Krafchick Norm Pokras John Postol Jerry Finn Herbie Akelaitis Wes Keefer Richie I Stanco Howie Watenmaker Alvin Epstein Mel Nocks Rich Cohn Barry Granick Arnie Lambck George Harris Lenny Quint Gerry Popick Frank Glasgall Richie Berns Henry Fleischer 7%e Sta Editorial Board Richard Einhorn Gilbert Henoch Stanley Lcff Arnold Lubasch Geraldine Salomon Barbara Shakin Corinne Shakin Beverly Simon Editorial Staff Edith Apfelroth Ruth Atterman Herbert Bccbcr Richard Berns Lois Chase Ronald Citron Kenneth Eisenberg Ina Frank Burton Kornfeld Shirley Metsky Nina Norton Melvin Silver Richard Skinder Bernice Soroka Phyllis Sunenshine Marilyn Weich Typing Staff Lorraine Raff, Chairman Arlene Anker Marcia Blasenstein Joyce Cohen Geraldine Feldblum Dorothy Ginsky Janet Grobcr Elaine Pross Barbara Singer Martin Garb Charlotte Zander Franklin Glasgall Maurice Gluck Art Staff Joan Gordon Connie Bird Elinor Hart Stephanie Davis Judith Kerdman Arlyne Goldberg Renee Kleiman Hildegarde Kaufmann Monroe Klein Norma Levine Beverly Levine Ann Lew Maxine Mcyerson Iris Macklis Rosemary Peason Janet Platoff Adelo Schoenbach Phyllis Plotkin Sondra Shapiro Cynthia Stark Howard Silver Shirley Steinberg Leonard Steinmark Advertising Staff Marlene Stone Doris Baccaro Marlene Susskind Nathan Chesal Leonard Werfel Claire Finkelstein Anna Zambolla Advisers Marie R.
