Smith Hughes Home Economics Domestic Science was put on in Weeping Water High School about six years ago with Miss Abernathy as teacher. Smith Hughes system was started two years ago for the purpose of getting the girls interest- ed in the practical phases of home making. This year there are 24 girls taking Home Economics. They have learned how to prepare and serve a meal by serving noon lunches through the winter. How to select the foods which furnish all the ele- ments necessary for health and growth. Their Clothing course has taught them how to select becoming colors and lines, how to select good materials and how to make their own gar- ments. Wise expenditure of the income, convenient arrangement of the kitchen, planning of Work to save time and labor, and selection and ar- rangement of furnishing have been taken up in the house management course. The art course applies art principles to the home, teaching the selec- tion of colors, for the rooms, arrangement of rugs and furniture, selec- tion and hanging of pictures, painting of vases, cans and Woodwork. The girls have made curtains for the windows, a lunch set and table cover which improve the appearance of the department. They have painted the shelves, cupboards and woodwork in the pantry white, and painted cans to put the supplies in. We have tried to teach these girls to select with economic and artistic comprehension all things that go into the home, from articles of utility to the fine arts.
