Sigh, History of Class of '24 We entered high school in the fall of 1920 with a bunch of thirty-three green Freshies. Our class officers chosen for the first semester were Kathryn Ellis, president, Bernice Richison, vice-president, Helen Gor- der, secretaryg Franklin Murfin, treasurer, Dorothy Wright, class re- porter, and Miss Gilmore, class advisor. Second semester officers were, Clair Hillman, Herbert Ambler, Dorothy Wright, Arthur Dunn and Hel- en Gorder. We enjoyed a number of good times during this year, including par- ties and picnics. Some of these were at the homes of the students, while others were in the gymnasium. We ended our Freshman year with an enjoyable outing a few miles east of Union, Nebraska, along the Missouri River. Our Sophomore year opened with the same enrollment, thirty-three. Class officers for the first semester were Franklin Murfin, Lyal Flem- ing and Helen Morse. Miss Smith, our English teacher, was chosen as sponsor. Second semester olfficers, were Helen Morse, Clair Hillman, Beatriece Richison and Herbert Ambler. During this year we had several social events, consisting of parties at the Towle and Wright homes, and a wiener roast in Baker's Grove. We were entertained at a St. Patrick party at the Baker home. We con- cluded this year with a picnic at Cedar Creek. We welcomed four new members, George Boyce, Eldon Mendenhall, Alma Christofferson and Lloyd Leyda, at the beginning of our Junior year. Our enrollment then totaled thirty-five. Class officers for the first semester were Edgar Cole, Franklin Murfin, Clara Rhodes, Beulah Little, and Miss Smith, Class advisor. For the second semester, Clair Hillman, Lawrence Gilmore, Helen G rder and Beulah Little. We purchased our pennant in our class colors of purple and white during the year. On April 18 and 19th, our class play, At the End of the Rainbow, was given. We gave a banquet for the Seniors, May 18th. We had several parties in the gymnasium, and cne each at the Baker and Elgaard homes during the year. We also had a picnic a few miles west of town. Four members joined us from Avoca in our Senior year. Mr. Witte and Miss Cerny were chosen as class sponsorsg Herbert Ambler, Frank- lin Murfin, Dorothy Wright and Helen Gorder as class officers. This year was a very busy one. We had parties in the Little and Morse homes. Now we are ready to graduate, a class of thirty-seven members, the largest that has ever graduated from Weeping Water. We shall ever have pleasant memories of our school days. 5 ' 'f' X Q J' ,Q H x3-fi 2' , U h V , o ' ,. as Q v i, L ,Q I, M :gg , , A L - , ni N A W .lf ' 2 ' 4 P ' 5 ' N Q ' g wha Senior Class Day Program Piano Solo --- Creda Baker Class History Beulah Little Class Prophecy Dorothy Wright Solo ....... History of Class of '25 In 1921 we entered High school with an enrollment of thirty-five gnembers. As Freshmen, we chose for our class advisor, Miss Quinn, our English teacher. Johanna Ankerson was elected president. During the year we had several parties which we enjoyed For our class picnic we visited the State Fisheries and spent a very enjoyable day. As Sophomores, with an enrollment of Twenty-nine, with Miss Quinn as class sponsor and with Gertrude Brown as president. We started to wcrk with new pep. A Halloween party at the Philpot home, and a picnic at the farm home of Donald Wiles were two enjoyable occasions never to be forgotten. On the last day of school we autoed to Nebraska City and visited Morton's Park and other places of interest. In the Junior year out enrollment was increased by three new mem- bers. While our social events were very few, owing to lack of time and greater responsibilities, we have found time to enjoy two parties, one given at the Home Ec. room and the other at the Smith home. But now, as time and space is limited we must close our history until we greet you again as Seniors , 1' -x x , x K . X 5.'r' f ' FM f, l K E -A 'Q L fx .1 T hh -H, , N, N NFNNFX. ff iff X Xb X. Miss Shires and D. S. Mohler were chosen as our sponsors. At the first class meeting we nominated and elected officers. We chose old rose and gray as cur class colors. A number of the class took advantage of the new courses and enrolled in Manual Training and Domestic Science. The Domestic Science class gave an exhibit for their mothers and showed some very good work. There were three parties during the year. On Monday, September 13th, we entered school with a roll of 38, having back with us our old class mate, Teresa Ash. We chose for our sponsors, Mr. Taggart and Mrs. Leone Swisher. We held two parties during the year, one at the home of Mary Ellen Wiles and the other one at the home of DeForest Brown. This was very much enjoyed by all as it was very cold that night. We have planned a class day, and hope everyone will be able to at- tend. Thus we ended up our Sophomore year. - Freshmen Class l 14? During the year we had several parties, the first at Miss Back's rooms at schrol. The next was a sleighing party. We met at school in the evening and coasted on one of the long hills near there. When we were tired of coasting we went to Miss Back's rooms and played games and had refreshments. We enjoyed other good times, too, and are looking forward to our re- maining years in high school with enthusiasm. i A Q Smith Hughes Vocational Agriculture LAWRENCE LITTLE FRED KIRCHHOFF GLENN COLE DONALD WILES MARION SPANGLER MILTON NELSON CHARLES HATCLIFF JESSE LIVINGSTON FRANCIS AKESON MILTON HOBACK ELMER .IOSEPHSON HERBERT STEINCAMP HELMER CHRISTENSEIN HARRY NOELL LYNN HOBACK NISSLEY MARSHALL LEO HOHMAN PROF. TAGGART Smith Hughes Vocational Agriculture This department was called to our curriculum in the year 1922-1923. Then as the 34th department established in the state under the Smith- Hughes law. We are now proceeding in the second year of our growth. Probably no growth, so far as numbers is concerned, as we ran to capacity last year, but we have grown in equipment, material and text books, till we are probably as well an equipped department as is in the school and nearly as well as is in the state. A word might be said -of our efforts at the Annual Nebraska High School Judging contests. In the year 1922-23 Clarence Sogard was 10th in the wood working contest and the Babcock milk test. Elmer Klepser, Fred Marquardt and Robert Meyer as the livestock judging team was 10th. These results were good in view of the fact that there were 21 teams competing and this our first year. The year 1923-24 was also suc- cessful. Nissley Marshall was second in the Babcock milk test, Fred Kirchoff was 12th in the wood work contest. The livestock judging team consisting of Clarence Kintner, Harry Noell and Eldon Mendenhall was 18th in a field of 25 teams. This low standing was due to the ele- ments f'r most part. The late spring, consisting of rains, bad roads, etc., made it impossible to perfect ourselves, because we could not get the practice needed. The embryonic organization stage of the department is passed and it is now based on a firm basis which will allow it to produce its maximum work. Prof. Taggart leaves the first of August for his new position at Barneston, but by that time we will have had time to finish the work this year and start next year's work in such a way that his successor will be able to take it up where he left off. The boys taking the work are enthusiastic about it and appreciate its value. Smith Hughes system was started two years ago for the purpose of getting the girls interest- ed in the practical phases of home making. This year there are 24 girls taking Home Economics. They have learned how to prepare and serve a meal by serving noon lunches through the winter. How to select the foods which furnish all the ele- ments necessary for health and growth. Their Clothing course has taught them how to select becoming colors and lines, how to select good materials and how to make their own gar- ments. Wise expenditure of the income, convenient arrangement of the kitchen, planning of Work to save time and labor, and selection and ar- rangement of furnishing have been taken up in the house management course. The art course applies art principles to the home, teaching the selec- tion of colors, for the rooms, arrangement of rugs and furniture, selec- tion and hanging of pictures, painting of vases, cans and Woodwork. The girls have made curtains for the windows, a lunch set and table cover which improve the appearance of the department. They have painted the shelves, cupboards and woodwork in the pantry white, and painted cans to put the supplies in. We have tried to teach these girls to select with economic and artistic comprehension all things that go into the home, from articles of utility to the fine arts. Weeping Water was handicapped at the outset by lack of experienced men and lack of weight in the line. General opinion was that Weeping Water would be lucky to win a single game on its schedule. Excellent team play, however, with The Foot Ball Season of 1923 the smashing tactics of Fleming anMurfin, brought a 30 to 0 win over Nebraska City. The following week a hard won touchdown by Captain Murfln in the closing minutes, with Joyce paving the way, defeated Elm- wood 6 to 0. Victory over the heavy veteran Elmwood team was the en- couragement needed, the team overwhelming Elmwood in the next game 47 to 6. Weping Water rammed their line, ran their ends and passed over their back field for a string of seven touchdowns. The lone Elm- wood scorer esulting from a wild pass and a blocked kick. The following defeats by Plattsmouth and Ashland, may be partic- ularly attributed to the loss of Swindle at uarterback. The tide turned back and so did the big Shubert team, with the short end of a 51 to 0 score. After emerging from the cloud of Cathedral passes, Nebraska City was again shut out 14 to 0. Turkey Day saw one of the greatest football battles staged on the Weeping Water grounds in years. Weep- ing Water won the first half 6 to 0, but the weight handicap of 40 pounds to the man began to tell, and in the third uarter the opponents fUniversi- ty Aggiesj, crossed the line twice. Weeping Water rallied and three times carried the ball inside the enemy's five yard line. The whistle blew too soon. Sccre 13 to 6. This ended our season with a re-cord of five wins and four losses. Our score 154-Opponents 93. Team play and clean ftotball were the outstanding characteristics of the team of '23, The material for the year was excellent. Captain Franklin Dlurfin at left half and quarterback, made many good plays in every game. Cap- tain Elect Lester Swindle was our quarterback and the best broken field runner till he broke his collar bone. Perry Rector was an able run- ner and did some good punting, Lyal Fleming, full back, was one of the hardest hitters Weeping Water has had for a number of years. Glen Cole at the other half could make off tackle plays gain us many yards. Herbert Lohnes at left end could stop anything that came his way in the shape of an end run or off tackle play. Harold Fisher, at left tackle, was a valuable man, starring a defense. Hugh Hammer, at left guard was a rod man to mix up the opponents' play before they got started. Harold Towle at center played a defensive game as Well as passing accu- rately on the offensive. Almer Rich and Lawrence Gilmore at the oth- er guard held it down well. William Joyce at right tackle was one of our best men for opening a hole for a play. Edgar Cole at right end was a wizard on catching passes and sneaking around the other end for a large gain. This ends the line-up of a successful football team. Those who go out of school this term are Captain Franklin Murfin, half and quarterbackg Lyal Fleming, Fullback g Glen Cole, right half g Harold Towle center: Lawrence Gilmore, guard, and Edgar Cole, right end. Those who played full time in every game were, Captain Franklin Murfin. Edgar Cfle, Harold Towle, William Joyce, Harold Fisher and Hugh Hammer. There will be an abundance of material next year. The team, as a whole was green this year, but with the excellent coaching of Mr. Hunt and the cooperation of the team we made a showing to be proud of, and we hope the team of 1924 will even better it. Boys' Basket Ball Team The Basket Ball season of '24 began with only two letter men about which to build a team. Weeping Water was handicapped at the outset by the lack of experienced material from which to make a team. Many of the men trying out for positions were awkward and showed little skill in handling themselves upon the floor. Under the splendid coaching of Mr. Hunt, the simple rudiments of the game were mastered and a team was soon built up with new men who were able to check their opponents with the five man defense, and advance the ball for soaring advantages. The personnel of the regular team, Captain Lyal Fleming, guardg Lohnes, stationary guard, Towle, centerg Cole, forwardg Rector, for- ward. The first game, which was won by a score of 18 to 10, was played with Union on the. home floor. The following games occurred in quick succes- sion: Greenwood, Union, Plattsmouth, Louisville, Eagle, Elmwood, Ne- hawka, Springfield, Murdock. As the season progressed they played higher class basket ball. The team was registered in Class F. at the Nebraska state tournament and made a commendable showing, holding the opposing team to a low score. i..i0ii.. S. sec nd team was victorious in six of seven games played adds a re t , , g a deal of satisfaction to the successful athletic year. The success of the season W t' as :irough the harmony and cooperation which prevailed on the second team. The line-up was as follows: Arthur Dunn '24, forwardg Asa Rec- tcr '26, fcrwardg Glen Hillman, '26, centerg William Joyce, '25, guardg Harold Fisher, '27, guard. Whitey Hillman made a good center on acccunt of his height. He was good at stopping opponents' passes. Art Dunn, a clean and fast player. Champion goal shooter Ace Rector. We are proud of our girls' team for the real good playing they did and the fine, snappy spirit they kept all through the season. We owe much to our coach, Mr. Witte, who showged us how to play real basket ball and kept our pep up to the highest poin . During the season we played sixteen games and lost four of them out of the happy sixteen. Our girls certainly deserve a great deal of credit for winning twelve games, which is the largest number won by a W. W. H. S. team of girls. The line-up was as follows: Olga Elgaard, '24, centerg Kathryn El- lis, '24, guard, Lillian Cappen, '24, forward, Freda Baker, '24, second center, Helen Lane '25, second sub. center, Gladys Philpot '26, sub. cen- ter, Kathryn Molden '26, forwardg Martha Hammer '27, guaidg Rula Lane, sub. guard, Magda Ankerson '27, sub. forward. Skinny Elgaard, tall and quick, was a good center. Kack Ellis, short, but rough, was a mighty fine guard. Lill Cappen, had a fever of putting the ball in the basket on time. Freaky Baker, made a mighty fine second center, and put the ball in the basket many times. Hctten Lane, shows a good chance of being a real second center. Boots Philpot, because of her swiftness and fast movement, made good as a center. Katy Molden, won us many scores and has another year to show her ability to the poor graduates. Dutch Hammer, although a Freshman guard, put one cver some of her big forwards in the way of her guarding. Rula Lane was a fine guard and always full of pep. Magda Ankersen always played a good game, and shows signs of bc- ing an A-1 forward next year. Urganizations Y 5 Hi-Y Our Hi-y branch of the Young Men's Christian Association for High Schools, is in its fourth year. The purpose of the organization is to fos- ter better Christian citizenship. It stands for clean speech, clean ath- letics and clean scholarship. The club has been smaller than usual this year and there has been so many other school activities, that they have interfered with the regular meeting and attendance. Eight of the members attended the state camp at Camp Sheldon last summer and enjoyed a very profitable and pleasant vacation of ten days. They were accompanied by their leader, E. E. Green, and brought home several prizes in athletics. About twice as many plan to go this year. The club united with the Girls' Club in a very successful and enjoyable Halloween party last fall and will close the year with a picnic for both clubs, to which all are looking forward. The officers the past year have been Herbert Ambler, president: Ar- thur Dunn, vice-presidentg Edgar Cole, secretary, and Eldon Mendenhall trcasurer. Girls' Club OFFICERS President ......... Dorothy Wright Glee Club You hear so much of football, and basketball and gym, But do you know, our school's not composed entirely of them? We have another phase of school life which appeals to our mind, A joy to equal music would be very hari to find. What a pleasure to the hearts of youth to sing, and sing and sing, Until the Walls, our hearts and souls with love of it do ring, And the echo of the music will linger in the heart When our little band of singers have drifted far apart. Yes, the music was a pleasure, but would it have been such If our faithful, patient teacher had not worked so hard and much? To the one who labored with us then, the tribute's surely due, So we'll say to Mrs. Swisher, Here's our hearty thanks to you. High School Chorus Our High School Chorus, consisting of one hundred and fifteen voices, has done exceptionally fine work this year. Early in the season we appeared in public, giving two of our numbers. This spring we are planning to appear in our own recital which is our main aim in chorus. Some of the pieces which we shall use and which should receive worthy mention are, Comrades of the Roads, Dance of Papaukewis, Car- mena, The Gypsy Song, and Pippas Sons. From her chorus, Mrs. Swisher chose twenty-one voices to form a trio, and eight voices to form the boys double quartette. They will give some special numbers at the Chorus Recital. The selections for all of our work show the wonderful ability for musical interpretation that Mrs. Swisher possesses. In the presentation of cur music, the cooperation of the pupils with their leader will be shown, also hor untiring, ceasless efforts to devel- cp something worthy to show to the public and of which to be proucl. We owe all of our success to her,and feel that without our music and Mrs. Swisher we would have lost the best there was in school life. I-I SQ I-I. FD 2 5.
