Soon Mrs. Bonnie Hilton, our homeroom teacher, had helped us overcome fears and we settled down for a hard year's work. Thomas Barclift was our class president, and Mr. I. N. Finley, principal. The two things that stand out most in our minds for that year were, the Christmas party at Ann Chamber's and a picnic at 'l'aylor's Beach, given by our grademothers. We lost William Bateman and Thomas Parker who decided they had had enough education. Ronald Fenton came in the spring. Next September we were 29 wise sophomores, the largest roll in high school at the time. Ioan Pritchard joined our class from Philadelphia. Shirley Reid did not continue school. This year our high school faculty was completely changed. Mrs. Howard Morrisette was our homeroom teacher, but after Christmas she was replaced by our Mrs. Margaret Houtz. Mr. W. C. Morrisette was our new principal, and Ann Chambers was our president. One of our most pleasant treats that year was a fish fry at Sand Landing. That spring we chose the color set for our class rings. We entered our third year of high school with twenty-one names on roll. What had happened to our large class? Peggy Brickhouse was married, Charlie C, Eves and Aubrey James had stopped school, Vernon G. James had gone to Military Academy in Florida, and Ronald Fenton, Clyde Morgan, Henry Parker had remained as sophomores. Audrey Shackelford, who had been with us in the first and second grades, came to graduate with us. Mrs. Houtz was still our homeroom teacher, and Betty Lou Meads, our president. This year was packed with much hard work and plenty of money-making ideas. Our beautiful class rings arrived on October 2. In February we gave the Jaycees a chicken pot pie supper and made very good on it. Spring of that year wedding bells rang for two of the girls, Renie Meads and Joan Pritchard. Jim Hensley from Washington State joined our class in April, By March we had opened our piggy banks and we began to plan for Junior-Senior Banquet. Finally the day arrived, May 7 -- girls in their first fomrals and boys in their neat suits, at the Virginia Dare Hotel. First we had a wonderful dirmerfchicken southern stylej and then a prom. We twirled gaily beneath the brightly colored paper which off set our theme Mexico. 'I'his could not have been so successful had we not had the many suggestions from Mrs. l-Ioutz and Mrs. Ausley. Soon came graduation and class night, with the traditional daisy chain -- this time with real daisies. How hard we worked -- and yet it wilted. Nevertheless, it was most beautiful to us. September 54 -- with 21 seniors occupying the senior homeroom, headed by Mrs. Margaret Bright, our guiding light. Our sentiments were mixed for this was the beginning of the end of one life, and Just over the rapids was a new life which will make us strive upstream. Doris Moore was elected our president. and we chose the red rose as class flower and retained the motto we had had our last three years, We paddle our own canoe. Mrs. Bright wrote our class song, to the tune of Stars and Stripes Forever. We chose mascots, invitations, and caps and gownsfwhich were white with purple and gold tasselsy. Also we decided for our gradeparents to be the ones we had had while in high school. They were: Mrs. Ed Benton, Mrs. James Madre, Mrs. Graham Moore, Mrs. Dennis Reogerson, Mrs. Tom Meads, Mrs. George Fletcher, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lowry. Nancy Pritchard was with us for only three weeks, when she was married. On November 7, we lost one of our beloved classmates, Mattie Carolyn Steeley. Came Christmas, and then New Year's Eve we were entertained by our grademothers with a lovely party at the Marcia Albertson Club House. Back to school, with only 17 seniors: Ann Chambers got married during the holidays. The last semester we have basketball conference and then our play. Plans for the rest of the year include a trip to Washington, D. C. and points North, also a hay ride and skating party, And most of all Junior-Senior Banquet. As the stream narrows before the rapids, we see in view, Baccalaureate Sermon, class night and as the last wave rushes forward, Graduation. Historian -- Nancy Lowry Last Will and Testament We, the senior class of 1955, being of sound mind and body, in spite of opinion to the contrary, do hereby bequeath to the several individuals listed below, the most prized of our possessions, to be used within the period of one year from date: To Weeksville High School, we leave our absence, without which there would be no purpose in our graduation. , To our principal, Mr, Morrisette, we leave our thanks for all the help, inspiration, and guidance given us during the three years he has been with us. To our homeroom teacher, Mrs. Bright, we leave our cheerfulness to distribute wherever needed among next year's seniors in case they are reluctant to approach the end. To Mrs. Houtz, who was our homeroom teacher for two years, we leave our ability to make money in case she ever needs it for another Junior Class. To Mrs. Ausley, the physics students wish to leave their knowledge of parallelograms to help ease the path of some unsuspecting soul who follows us. To the Junior Class, we leave our ever-ready, do-or-die spirit, and we hope that this determina- tion may get them some senior privileges. I, 'I'homas Barclift, gladly will nothing to anybody because I need it all myself, I, Alice Ann Benton, will my position as Beta Club President to my cousin, William Charles Benton. l.et's keep the Bentons in there, boy!
