The projection for the 1980’s is thematically considered to be the “Energetic Eighties. This theme characterizes the zeal displayed by Americans throughout the land for the duty of our nation to create a better world. The need for energy is being balanced by the concern for safety regulations. The need to feed the hungry is being met by charitable contributions of food supplies, and the need for understanding is being met by the extension of brotherhood. These are the fine qualities that I see displayed in the Class of 1980 and 1 know you will succeed in all your endeavors as you progress through this decade. Best Wishes. Sincerely, Dr. Richard E. It is my sincerest wish that the you who emerges in the future can reflect with satisfaction upon these experiences, and can view them from a position of joy and success. Principal Peter J. Before starting the game the teachers were instructed on how to sit on the donkeys, but due to circumstances beyond their control, many of them found themselves sitting on the floor instead. Seniors Teach Faculty A Lesson! “Give me detention, huh- wait till I get you Friday. “You little squirts don’t have a chance of beating us teachers — you'd better say your prayers. In the days before the senior-faculty game, these good-natured taunts and threats are constantly exchanged in classrooms and halls. Teachers and students alike always look forward to this annual event. The distance between teacher and student is somewhat lessened and the participants are able to compete on a more or less equal level. The students this year swept the faculty members away with some hot-shot shooting, fast breaking, and constant defen- sive pressure. The girls squad easily defeated the woman faculty team, 38-16, and the boys surprisingly overwhelmed an undermanned, undercondi- tioned men's faculty squad, 76-55. With the hoots and hollers of the seniors ringing in their ears, the teachers, tired and winded, could only reply Wait till next year. They may be bitter rivals on the court but senior Ralph Rosado and faculty member Anthony D'Angelo display the warm affection that is found among the teachers and students at WHS. The senior girls anxiously await a shot at their favorite teachers. Even though they were “all mixed up Kathy Dunkin, Lisa Spinosa. Carmen Camacho, and Ross Minervini straightened themselves out enough to help defeat the women faculty members. English teacher Robert Schmidt reflects the wear and tear of a tough, but futile effort to defeat a strong senior team. A confident group of faculty members discuss tactics before the game. Are We Ready For The Eighties? As we graduate we are not only becoming true adults but we are also leaving a nest which has protected us from the outside elements. Before we proceed with the years to come we must look back, back at what we may not have been aware of. but what had to have had an influence on our thoughts and ideas. The seventies, which were sometimes referred to as the me decade, found Americans busily trying to improve themselves in any way possible. But the seventies also had its bleak moments. As we entered '71 a major breakthrough in overseas relations occurred when Henry Kissinger visited Red China, opening a path for future relations. Also in '71. 18 year olds became eligible to vote. The year 1972 offered devastating tragedies, most outstanding being the Olympic Games held in Munich. Members of the Palestinian Liberation Organization broke into Israeli quarters and killed 11 after holding them hostage in return for the release of 200 Arabs held in Israeli prisons. Other events in this violent year included the death of Harry Truman and the wounding of Governor George Wallace. A path to better relations with China was widened when they gave us two pandas as a gift of good will. '73: Remember Watergate? Yes, this was a year of disclosures. The involvement of President Nixon with the Watergate break-in led to his acquiring a reputation as a liar and a computer. Also, formal U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war ended and Vice- President Spiro Agnew resigned as a result of a charge of income tax evasion. '74: Nixon, after near impeachment, was forced to resign from the presidency. Patty Hearst was kidnapped and the sale of gold became legal. '75: The hope of returning freedom to South Vietnam came shattering down. The beginning of a flight to freedom for refugees began. Patty Hearst was arrested, “Squeaky” Fromme attempted to kill President Ford and Chiang Kai-Shek died at the age of 87. 1976: Peanut year had arrived! It was another election year and people were looking for a ''new'' man to run their country, and thus elected former Governor of Georgia, Jimmy Carter, as their new President! It was also the year of our country's bicentennial! Happy Birthday America! “Sex scandals in the White House! claimed Elizabeth Ray. 1977: Peace? After 29 years of distant hatred, Israel and Egypt began peace talks. Remember the blackout? 1978: Horror! Congressman Ryan, at the request of many California residents, went to Guyana to investigate the Reverend Jim Jones' cult. The People’s Temple. Little did he know of the consequences of his investigations. Not only were the Congressman and an NBC newsman shot, but 914 people were led to a grisly death by the reverend. Also, the first test tube baby was born and the Yankees won the World Series! For you locals, Weehawken's football team broke their 2 year losing streak by defeating Union Hill and Marist. 1979: The man of peace began his voyage across the world. Pope John Paul, the man with the golden smile, came to the U.S. to spread a new religious aura across the nation. The Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl against Dallas. Gas prices went up and long lines were up and rocketing with the price of gold, which hit a record of $700 an ounce. On a sadder note, Americans mourned the death of Richard Rogers, one of the great Broadway composers of all time. As his own lyrics testify, his “songs will be sung for a thousand years . 1979 was also a year of terror! The Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Iran and began a crusade of utter horror, actually holding America hostage. Fifty Americans are as of this writing held hostage in a take over of the U.S. embassy. Three Mile Island stirred up the anger of many citizens criticizing the use of nuclear power. Margaret Thatcher was elected the first woman prime minister in England. Remember the King Tut craze? The 70’s was certainly a fascinating decade. Ballet dancers were defecting, women were fighting for equal rights and disco was the newest fad around. We witnessed the loss of Elvis, Bing Crosby and John Wayne. We’ve seen newcomers enter the world of show business - Charlie's Angels , Cheryl Tiegs and Suzanne Sommers brought about the latest fad in TV shows - the Jiggle Show . In fashion, skirts were up, down and then slitted, as was the economy of the nation! Everything and everyone was becoming high” in every aspect of the word. We've exercised ourselves to death, dieted and jogged for miles on end, while tennis and soccer became very popular. Cities were broke as were the banks this summer and we're certainly on skates! (Cheap skates?) Remember the big snow storm? We went from large to small, easy to technical. Computer games were certainly in . There were also news strikes and teacher strikes too! Our sense of morality was questioned as issues like abortion and divorce became prominent. Teenage pregnancies were also on the rise as was drug use among students. These were the events we experienced and, hopefully, matured with. The times were frustrating and sometimes bleak, but faith and dedication pulled us through. They will form our memories when we look back, bringing us smiles and tears. We wave farewell to the 70's, and prepare to meet the challenge of the new decade. Staff members sold bumper stickers and candy bars in order to meet costs. Advisor Anthony Colasurdo stressed improvements in leads, and good basic journalistic style. Exper- imenting with a new format was done with layouts and headlining. A school newspaper Exchange Program was begun this year enabling Weehawken to share ideas with local high schools. Advisor John Passarotti Demonstrating character, initiating leadership, and providing services are the qualities upon which the National Honor Society stands. The Carpe Diem chapter has established a fine reputation within the community for rendering such services as collecting money for the American Cancer Society on Dime Day, answering letters to Santa Claus for all the grade schools, recycling news- papers, and providing hostesses for school functions. The National Honor Society is planning to extend its services by collecting stamps for the Salvation Army, who in turn will provide meals for the poor in underdeveloped countries. The members also sponsored a Spring Dance for the entire student body. 68 Inductees. Coach Patrick Digiore constantly stressed the importance of the follow through. Diane Behrens, sidelined for much of the season because of illness, was greatly missed. With a record of 0-12, the girls' tennis team didn't have a very successful season. Some of the veteran players were injured and inexperienced players had to be brought up faster than they should have been. This may work to the girls' advantage next season, however, since only one player is graduating. Outstanding performers included captain Rose Minervini, Diane Behrens and Debbie Holloway. 77 Soccer Gets A New Kick Coach D'Angelo discusses strategy with team during half-time of St. Peter's Javier Macias practices juggling in preparation match. for an upcoming match. The football team's fantastic surprise victory over Essex Catholic on Thanksgiving Day by a score of 27-0 left the sweet taste of success in the hearts of players and fans. The entire team had a part in the victory, but outstanding perfor- mances were turned in by Tommy Englese, Ralph Rosado, and Frank Ortiz, each of whom scored a touchdown. Sammy DeLaTorre kicked a field goal and extra point. Mike Rodrique added a two-point conversion on a pass from Alberto Ruiz. Although the team was not as successful as had been hoped (1-7-1) the triumph provided a satisfying conclusion to an otherwise disappointing season. Our 1979-1980 basketball season will never go down in WHS's history, but even though our Indian team wasn't victorious they fought each opposing team till the last second. With a new coach, Brian Long, and a team of enthusiastic players, the Indians played hard and strong. Because of the lack of experienced senior players, our varsity had to enlist the help of the underclassmen. Brought up to the higher ranks, the rookie players held their own and played superior ball.
