THE SETTI — Foreword Life is an empty canvas upon which Time paints with its brush of experiences. With new colors of significant experiences, the portrait grows under the influence of Time's deft hand, fulfilling itself and adding to itself, until it reaches a stage of maturity. We are the painter's subjects and the entire substance of his work. Whether or not the painting is one of value depends on us. Since Time cannot paint without a pallete, our experiences must supply the colors and contrasting shades, so that a product worthy of recognition can be created. In the 1962 ZENITH, we have en- deavored to show some of the strokes, colors, and tones that Time has thus far painted, so that we may retain a vivid and lasting image of our canvas as it is now. Now we pause to note the various elements which have combined, to form this complex composition so far. We are about to view all of its parts, from the careful, fundamental strokes applied through the efforts of our teachers, to the deeper tones and shadings contributed by our final year of school activities. This is the question that confronted us when we decided to dedicate the 1962 Zenith to Mr, Allen Schichtel. Needless to say, we succeeded, although it was a difficult task. Completely unaware of this tribute, Mr. Schichtel has devotedly given his time and efforts to work with us throughout the year, his invaluable advice and encouragement the very nucleus of the Zenith. It would be totally unnecessary to list his accomplish- ments and qualifications, for as every senior knows, Mr. Schichtel is a man of unlimited intellectual faculties as well as a master of sophisticated wit. As head of the English Department, Mr. Schichtel holds the respect of all at Weehawken High School; hence, we feel it a privilege to have for a teacher this man, who, by his own example, has instilled in us a thirst for knowledge, one of the most valued possessions that we might acquire. With the exceptional ability to reach into the heart of his subject, extract the essence, and convey it to his students, Mr. Schichtel effectively simplified the English course, making it both stimulating and pleasureable. It is with appreciation and admiration that we proudly speak for the class of 1962 in dedicating the 1962 Zenith to Mr. Allen Schichtel. BOARD OF EDUCATION To consider the welfare of an entire community in decisions directly affecting the education of its youth, is a vital task. The Board of Education is the organization which must assume this responsibility, adopting and carrying out the policies for the general operation of our school system. It is the foremost authority, within the town, in matters concerning the various aspects of school life. The capable men who compose the Weehawken Board of Education have approached their task with wisdom and efficiency, striving to enable us to develop our minds and personalities in a school system of high caliber. Dr. Herman B. Kaplan, President Left to right: Mr. Carl P. Brems; Dr. Charles E. Woltmann; Mr. Brinley M. Lansdowne, Secretary: Dr. Herman B. Kaplan, President; Mr. A. Wallace Gendron. Superintendent of Schools; Mr. Maurice 8 L. Pinel. Vice-President; Mr. John J. Goelz. All right Mrs. Tinbergen, what's your excuse this time? SUPERINTENDENT The Superintendent of Schools, as the chief co- ordinator of the public schools, has many and varied duties. Mr. A. Wallace Gendron, the capable and effi- cient holder of this position, has become a respected and admired friend of the students at Weehawken High School. Although provided with a busy working day, full of the details that his position entails, Mr. Gendron finds time to maintain a personal contact with the students, conversing with them and exchanging greetings in the halls. It is evident that he takes a personal interest in the student body, realizing the importance of gaining the friendship, as well as the respect, of each student. Mr. Gendron, with his warmth and naturalness, has narrowed the gap between officialdom and student at Weehawken High School. A. Wallace Gendron Superintendent of Schools PRINCIPAL George Becker Principal Every organization, in order to succeed in its ultimate goal, must have a guiding force. We are fortunate to have such a force in our principal, Mr. George Becker. Mr. Becker is the man behind the organization and success of many aspects of our school life. His boundless enthusiasm and vital- ity have inspired us to try our best in all of our endeavors. So freely giving of his time in all activities, ranging from sports to proms, Mr. Becker acts not only in his capacity as principal, but also as a friend and helper to the stu- dents. He has become more than the ordinary symbol of authority to us; he has gained a permanent place in the heart of each student. 10 Mr. Becker being entertained by a large cast. Could I interest you in the package deal, child? That's a week's supply of late slips. ASSISTANT TO THE PRINCIPAL To obtain respect from an entire body of students is a difficult and challenging problem: yet. to Mr. Morris Stein, the solution seems to come quite naturally. With a defi- nite conception of disciplinary pro- cedure he successfully executes one of the many facets connected with his position. Always an ardent supporter of school activities, his familiar smile and cheerful greeting are as frequently seen at a football or baseball game as within the school halls. With wisdom and a concern for others he has been influential in the betterment of many lives. Realizing these quali- ties the student body wishes to express appreciation to this dedi- cated man whose high standards have been the foundation for numerous achievements. Morris Stein Assistant to the Principal 11 FACULTY Underlying our portraits of life, and giving them enduring strengtn is the stable framework formed by our instructors. The wisdom, assur- ance, and sober hues of these strokes are achieved only by years of work and experience. The faculty of Weehawken High School has carefully and deliber- ately guided us toward maturity, and, in so doing, has contributed the firm foundation upon which all other segments are built. Our teachers, realizing the seriousness and endurance of their effect on our canvases, have contributed the richer, deeper, tones of black and purple necessary for the enrichment of any painting. These strokes, which they have so carefully applied, represent not only the guidance and help offered throughout our high school years, but also give us the firmest support with which to face life and the eventual completion of our portraits. We, the Seniors of 1962, now view the combination of strokes and colors which have been added to our once unmarked canvas. Some strokes were spontaneously splashed on in moods of abandon, while others were drawn with infinite patience and care. Many of these more subtle tones and shadings of maturity have given form and meaning to that portion of our canvas which recorded our Senior year. The experiences gained from each of the successful activities in which we have participated, have contributed to some phase of our canvases, whether it be the bold rugged sweep of sports, the pastel tints of the Senior Prom, or the serene whites and blues of graduation. Our canvases sre gradually being transformed into images which reflect our thoughts, actions, and aspirations. A segment of the canvas is now completed, and the brush of Time moves on! 28 Marilyn Bonsee ( Let's make a clean sweep for ithose freshmen. Margaret Breiter The broad divider between high school and college or high school and the competitive world of business requires excelled efforts on the canvass of life to assure a successful transition. Academic achievement must supple- ment basic knowledge in order to enhance personal responsibility. Such has been the case of the students pictured here. Recogniiing scholastic import- ance, they have applied an abundance of its color on their respective canvasses of life. Therefore, it is with honor and respect that the Zenith gives acclaim to those who, having climaxed their high school education with the attainment of such noteworthy standards, have justly earned the title of TOP TEN OF THE CLASS OF 1962. 4. Charles Bazikian 9. Richard Hughes 5. Andrea Toffler 7. Bernice Rogge Joyce Casey 8. George Wieder UNDERCLASSMEN As one looks at the canvases of the undergraduates, he perceives the fragile pastel hues, delicate in appearance and lacking in the fuller, deeper tones of maturity. While these paintings are composed solely of uncertain lines and soft colors, the undergraduates are looking for- ward to the strengthening of their composition by more deliberate strokes and the deepening of color through experiences they will encounter in the future years. Their various scholastic achievements and stimulating activities have added to and enriched their canvases. Each year brings its new challenges with promises of golden accomplishments which will provide the pigments with which the undergraduates' canvases will be composed. CLASS OF 1963 Under the able guidance of Mrs. Florence Levine, the Class of 1963 has completed a year patterned by noteworthy goals. Enthusiasm and vigor on the part of Juniors prevailed throughout their various cam- paigns and programs. As a result, success climaxed their Friday night dance. Soon to follow was the very rewarding Christmas card sale which en- larged both class funds and class spirit. The hard work, which was evi- denced throughout the year, was rewarded on the night of the Junior Prom. Pride and satis- faction permeated the atmos- phere as the Juniors assembled for the last time as underclass- men. The anxiety of being Seniors will soon be realized. Vested in them will be tradition as well as challenging endeavors. We, the graduating Class of 1962, extend our sincerest wishes for a successful and prosperous year to the graduatirjg Class of 1963. Farinola, Vice-President. September 1961 ushered in a new element to the Weehawken High School. The Class of 1965 appeared, and with it came the distinction of being the first fresh- men group to be housed in the building. School spirit was immediately associated with the freshmen as they enthusiastically attended vari- ous activities. Under the capable advisorship of Mr. Arthur Palumbo, the Class of '65 first showed competence with the success of its Friday night dance. Class funds were bolstered and class co-operation was strength- ened as all devoted freshmen strived to reach their quota in the sale of stuffed animals. Once again success marked the outcome. Mr. Bellingham instructing his class in the Industrial Arts. 71 SENIOR ACTIVITIES To our carefully drawn, yet still unfinished canvases, there have been added through participation in senior activities, the more delicate lines and radiant highlights which help to enrich the individual paintings that symbolize our lives. Early in the year, our experiences in handling the senior dance and magazine sale laid the basic foundation for this phase of our picture. The bright colorful hues of vivacity and excitement were dabbed on by the thrill we experienced with the presentation of our senior play; and addi- tional color was brushed on by the festive mood of our masquerade. Student Day provided the darker and more sober tones representing the responsibilities which lie ahead of us. Memories of our Senior Prom have contributed the pastel colors of sentiment and happiness and have over- laid the happenings of the year with lasting veneer. The Senior Executive Committee is composed of those seniors elected by their classmates to lead the class in the activities of the year. Under the supervision of Mr. Thomas Urchuk, the Executive Committee of the Class of 1962 has managed the annual senior dance as well as a magazine sale, the results of which were unprece- dented in Weehawken's history. They unselfishly con- tributed their time and energies to make our last senior event, the prom, a truly enjoyable and memorable occasion. Through their sincere and unceasing efforts, the com- mittee has united the class in striving for and accom- plishing its common goals. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OFFICERS Standing: Mr. Urchuk, Advisor; F. Pizzuta. President; A. Pizzuta, Treasurer. Sitting: J. Casey. Secretary; G. Heinrich, Vice-President. 74 SENIOR DANCE The annual Senior Dance, which successfully began a year of varied activities for the Senior Class, was held in the fall, amidst feel- ings of spirit and excitement. Attendance by all classes was great, and Yogi Bear made a guest appearance during the night, to be Presented as a door prize to Claire Schwe- erger. Thus a keynote was established that prevailed throughout the activities which fol- lowed during the remainder of the year. 75 In 1962 the Student Council launched its Good Grooming Campaign. (Monitor’s Degree) STUDENT DAY Student Day of 1962 once again provided seniors with an opportunity to de- part from their roles as students in order to per- form the duties of members of the faculty or administra- tion. A realization of the responsibilities entailed in assuming these positions lent a serious, yet satisfy- ing, note to the day. Every position in the school, from custodial staff to the Board of Education was capably filled, resulting in an exper- ience which was pleasant and unique to all concern- ed. The costumes, which ranged from fanciful to fantastic, did much to enhance the gala mood. Among the guests were former Weehawken students now attending North Bergen High School, as well as members of the faculties of both schools. Supplementing the usual recorded music was the stimulating sound of the dance band and the voice of their accompanist, April Lom- bardo. HARVEY After weeks and weeks of prep- aration, on March 23 and 24, the dramatically inclined students of the class of 1962 presented to the public their performances of Harvey by Mary Chase. The comedy was re- ceived enthusiastically due to the laudable efforts and memorable per- formances of the actors. Under the very capable hand of Mr. James Taylor, the cast and committees gave their all to satisfy the lively antici- pation of their audience. This anti- cipation grew from the many evi- dences of rehearsals, planning, and a sneak preview. Acting as a worthy and exciting opener to the many spring functions, traditional at Wee- hawken, this Senior Play served as a lively boost to the seniors' growing treasury. The hanging of Harvey. Amid the orchid, lilac, and white atmosphere befitting Arriverderci Roma, the 1962 Senior Prom became a realization. Intricate planning and many hours of work on the part of various committees headed by the Senior Executive Committee combined to unfold the most await- ed and extravagant event of the year. There is little doubt that any senior, or any guest for that matter, will forget this gala evening. Fond memories will always be recalled, whether they stem from the grandeur of the decorations ,the excitement and elegance of the dining and dancing, or the excellence of entertainment. A Roman Holiday. The experiences gained from the many and varied activities at Weehawken High School add multi-colored hues to the portrait of each student. Some are bright and cheerful tones denoting the carefree moods of those extra-curricular activities organized mainly for enjoyment by the students. Others contribute more subdued, but everlasting, colors of those which are more mentally stimulating. Participation in these varied activities adds a special individualism to our portraits, making each one definite and distinguishable among the innumerable others. No matter what moods and colors the activities represent, their pur- pose of enriching with color and texture is achieved, as they round out our individual personalities. Student Council is not only an organization; it is the liaison between the student body and the administration. Its governing body consists of four officers, an executive committee representing each of the four grades, and a representative from each homeroom. Through this representation it endeavors to analyze and study any school problem, and to offer a solution. Because it desires to have the opinions and recommendations of the entire school body, Council maintains a suggestion box, the contents of which are considered and answered at each meeting. As in past years, Student Council sponsored a successful Red Cross Drive, as well as a conscientious screening for Youth and Student Day. Along with traditional duties, Council has to cater to each year's needs. Always prideful of the school, Council in- augurated a Good Grooming Campaign. The students responded with enthusiasm, and proper attire has become an everyday occurrence. Throughout the year, Student Council has been fortunate in having the ever-ready guidance of Miss Mary Alexovits. Her advice and cooperation have helped us achieve our goal of a Student Council for and by the students. STUDENT COUNCIL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE SiMing: G. Michel, Vice President; Miss Alexovits, A. INDIAN INK Indian Ink brings the student body of Weehawken High School informative and en- joyable reading prepared by the able editorial staff under the guidance of Mrs. Elsie Wahlers. Contained in the pages are articles on special school events, sports and activities of the various classes, fashions of the day, as well as thought-provoking editorials. Its four issues summarize the occurrences comprising the school year. Cooperating with the editorial staff is the Indian Ink Business Staff whose duty it is to obtain funds through the sale of ads, and to sell the newspaper to the students as it is published. Working together earnestly, these two staffs combine their efforts in order to present to the students informative and amusing reading, while providing an outlet for creativity for those having special skills in writing, photography, and layout organiza- tion. Its evolution is a long and tedious enterprise combined with the satisfaction that results when one has created something of merit. Each member of the staff brought to the Zenith his own unique talent. Margaret Breiter deservedly secured a berth as literary editor, while Elaine Bertelsen lent her artistic talents in the capacity of art and layout editor. Ed Looney and George Michel contributed their skills in the fields of photography and sports writing respec- tively. Skillfully co-ordinating the efforts of these many areas and bringing the year- book to auspicious culmination was its Editor-in-Chief, Paulette Truncellito. ZENITH BUSINESS STAFF In order to produce a yearbook of high quality, it is necessary to have a group of people with spirit and sheer determination working behind it. We have had such a group in the Zenith Business Staff, composed of seniors who have vigorously worked toward the success of the 1962 Zenith. They conducted highly profitable financial achievements with proficiency and determination. With the co- operation of the student body, the staff con- ducted an ad drive, and a patron drive enlisting the aid of the community. The vitality and perseverance of Mrs. Williams, the staff's advisor, have been the stimulating force to which their success is largely contributed. We, of the Zenith Edi- torial Staff, extend our sincere appreciation to the Zenith Business Staff without whose services the 1962 Zenith would not have been possible. Schweberger, Mrs. Williams. M. Through their constant efforts, the halls and stairways are freed from congestion, and serious traffic problems are alleviated. The excellent supervision of these boys is attributed to Mr. Frank Strukel. whose efforts are repeatedly rewarded by the fine reputation that the traffic boys have acquired. First Row: B. They de- liver absentee lists and other notices to the teachers, guide visitors through the school, and act as usherettes at various social functions throughout the year. In order to do this, they must relinquish at least one of their study periods. Competently instructed by Miss Kathrine Roelker, the girls learn to perform the tasks involved in managing and maintaining this store-house of knowledge. The members of the council gladly utilize their valuable experience and general information in aid- ing the students to choose litera- ture from the orderly shelves. Silting: M, Diminich. This broad field includes acting, directing, set de- signing, and back-stage maneuv- ering. For the third consecutive year a One Act Play Contest highlighted the events of this group. Comedy dominated the three performances in which freshmen, juniors, and seniors strived to bring the winning trophy to their respective class. Both the talents of the casts and the exuberant spirit of the student body combined to make this an enjoyable assembly. Thus, under the professional direction of Mr. James Taylor, the Masque and Mime has enjoyed a unique experience. In their en- deavors they have gained not only the fundamentals of theatrical pro- duction, but tasted the spirit of competition. First Row: S. Heubner. L. Siebert. R. Costebile. C. Flanagan. D. The unique aim of this club is the develop- ment of initiative, leadership, and good citizenship. These aims are achieved by the Key Club's service programs, particularly at Christmas- time, when the members answer local letters written to Santa Claus. The focal point of the club's actions was the sale of Weehawken decals to students and faculty. Striv- ing toward goals of generosity and sociability, the club has been quite active. The Sigma Gamma Chi gave its members a Christmas party in which every girl had her share of planning and enjoyment. Well known for its charitable work at Wee- hawken High School, the club this year made Easter baskets for the orphans. Miss Carey accompanied the girls to New York City to see the play, The Sound of Music, and on another occasion the group dined at a French restaurant in the City. Toward the end of the term, the girls received the traditional tan blazers with the club's insignia boldly printed on them. JUNIOR RED CROSS The Jr. Red Cross of Weehawken High School promotes the ideals of the American Red Cross on a high school level. Under the supervision of their advisor, Miss Anna Arling- haus, the girls take part in projects which are designed to give comfort and pleasure to people in hospitals and other institutions. Projects to be used on an international level are also made so that people abroad may receive a true picture of American student-life. Several of the girls also serve in North Hudson Hospital as volunteer Nurses' Aides. The mem- bers of the Jr. Red Cross work together to serve the individual, the community, and the country. Under the baton of talented Mr. Anthony Maio, the mem- bers of the school orchestra have adequately instilled a feel- ing of music appreciation in their audience. This has been the result of diligent practice and hard work on the part of the musicians and their new director. The fine music of the orchestra has been a welcome addition to all assembly pro- grams. Highlighting the musical season, and bringing it to an enjoyable climax was the or- chestra’s inspired performance in the Spring Concert. Would you like me to sing it for you now? 107 THEATER CLUB The Theater Club endeavors to stimulate an interest in the theater and to provide an outlet for this interest through play attend- ance. Proximity to New York has greatly helped to promote these aims with the wide choice of on or off-Broadway plays. In an effort to select the most worthwhile shows, the Theater Club devotes much time to discussing themes and reviews. After a choice has been made, the theater enthu- siasts look forward to an enjoyable evening performance. Through the work of ardent theater-goer Miss Marion Honiss, the goals of this club have been attained. Front: M. Balocco. M. Tamlce P. Durnien. C. Berteisen. L. Van Vallcenburg. Second Row: R. BOWLING CLUB The Bowling Club consists of both boys and girls who would like the opportunity to bowl for enjoyment and also learn some skills of the game. Under the expert advice of Mr. Arthur Palumbo, the keglers have meetings every Thursday, at which time they bowl against each other. They are taught proper technique and skills, and even shown the correct attire for the game, through films which are supplied by the Brunswick Company. BOWLING CLUB OFFICERS First Row: N. Hroncich. Just as sports are rugged and colorful, so are the strokes they apply. No heed is given to fine touches on this portion of our canvases; the strokes are splashed on in uneven bursts of crimson. The struggles and defeats in various sports add strengthening quali- ties of character and individualism. A potent and invigorating color, whose boldness can be dimmed neither by the blush of victory or the shadows of defeat, is spontaneously splashed on by the spirit and excite- ment that accompany any athletic endeavor. Sports fill in a certain gap in a person's life, as in a canvas, making a more versatile and well-rounded individual. Thus sports serve the same purpose for our canvases as they do our lives; that is, enriching them and broadening their scope by means of the brilliant colors and carefree de- signs they provide. Following the win against Ferris, which opened the season, the Indians posted a 3-game losing streak. However, because of the capable supervision of Head Coach Art Kaplan and the deter- mined efforts of such players as Alan Kashian, Thomas (Duke) Gray, and Frank Pizzuta, the Indians were able to return to their winning ways. By downing pre- viously unbeaten Harrison 25-14, the Kap- landers went on to defeat a strong Ridge- field club 20-14 and post the highest score over Marist 34-6. While only being able to tie with Cliffside Park, our traJitional Thanksgiving rival, it was generally con- ceded to be a moral victory. Driving this game, Fullback Jack Fahey advanced to the position of second highest scorer in the county and was made a member of the third team in the county lineup. The impressive season compiled by the football team is a tribute to Art Kaplan who made his initial appearance in the rank of head coach. Luxuriating in the comforts of the locker room, Coach Kaplan delivers a spirit-lift- ing lecture. I think you're wanted down at the 2-yard line, Frank. Hoeschele, 114 HKorP- Soccer is a test of human endurance. It requires the speed of a sprinter, the endless drive of a distance runner, the strength of a football player, and the sportsmanship necessary for any sport. The basic skills and stamina are develop- ed by rigorous practice. However, the spirit of good sportsmanship can only be acquired through the individual's own efforts. Therefore, despite the statistics (the record was 3-5-1), coach Demon- treux’s players displayed to all its oppo- nents the true spirit of’good sportsman- ship. The season produced some fine mo- ments and players; no team defeated the Indians by more than 2 points, and an excellent Irving team went down, in its only defeat, to Weehawken, Otto Claussen received an honorable men- tion for the Hudson County Team. The season was an improvement over last years record 2-7-1, and the Wee- hawken Rooters have place every mem- ber of its hard-fighting team on the scrolls of those we honor highly. You've still got it wrong. It's 1-2 cha cha cha! Wrestling, unlike most other sports, does not function as a team sport, in the sense that each player must depend solely on his own efforts. Although final success depends on the scores tallied by each match, every man must depend entirely on his own abili- ties, make his own opportunities, and take advantage of them. These skills are devel- oped through vigorous practice sessions and competitive matches. Mr. Wolf's laddies have developed into individuals of strong character. De- spite a fair team record, their individual records are very impressive. The team captain, Terry Orlick, enjoyed an excellent record (12-2) with the fine performances by co-captain Sonny Bocchichio (1-3-2), Larry McClure (7-2-3), and Allen Roman- owiti (8-3-2). Each match was played against stiff and challenging competition. WRESTLING 'I beg your pardon, but you're cutting off my oxygen supply. 'If you say 'Uncle', I'll let you go. 115 First row: C. Suffering greatly from illness, the team was unable to win many games, but displayed a hard-fighting, never-quit- ting quality that gained them much respect and admiration. The season found the Indians defeating their rival, Union Hill, twice; the second game after a suspenseful overtime. The team also advanced to the sectional semi-finals in the state tournament, where they posted vic- tories against Ferris and Leonia. only to be elimi- nated from further com- petition by a strong Du- mont five. Typically fine perform- ances were exhibited by starters Bob Rennie, Fred Eschweiler, Duke Gray, and upcoming juniors Jack Schweberger and Bill Clark. Coach Palumbo's keglers, compiled a score of 975, whcih was second highest in the county. This meant that each player averages in the vicinity of 195. Captain Phil Scheil and junior Bob Nuendurf rolled typical games in the 220 bracket. The team posted fine victories over Ferris, Union Hill, and Emerson. They also were the only team to defeat first , place Memorial even once. This year's track team overcame a lack of returning squads- men with an abundance of spirit and enthu- siasm. The mainstays of last year’s track team were gone via graduation. Therefore, the hopes of a good season rested upon Co-Captains Dan Rosen and Robert Kol- heim, half miler and miler, respectively. Coach Yasson terms this year one of rebuilding. The team, composed of fresh- men and sophomores, shows strong poten- tial. and with the experienced coaching of Mr. Yasson, next year’s season may prove rewarding. TRACK First row: L. Elwell. A. With the return of Allie Kashian to first base, Duke Gray to the plate. Jack Fahey to left field, and Bob Rennie to the mound, Weehawken's hopes for an excellent season seem well-founded. Coach Del Purgatorio has seasoned his line with Bill Clark, Tom Adamowicz, and Fred Schultz. The team has also picked up two new opponents in North Bergen and St. Josephs. All these things portend to victory for Weehawken. MAJORETTES The majorettes of Weehawken High School add excitement to the football games as they strut across the field in their colorful uniforms. The preparation for these games and other activities, including performances in pep rallies and parades, takes much time and practice, but the girls work diligently to perfect their routines. Under the supervision of their advisor, Miss Rose Mon- tagne, and the leadership of Cap- tain Terry Colao and Co-Captain Beverly McClure, the majorettes are a delightful asset to Wee- hawken High School. Each of the girls try, through dili- gent practice, to perfect pre- cision and do her best to raise the spirits of the fans. As all who have seen them will agree, they have succeeded in doing this. All of us have watched them skillfully execute their splits, flips, and jumps at every football and basketball game. It is their enthusiasm and vitality that keeps up the spirit of the spectators, no matter what the score. COLOR GUARD AND BAND Under the musical directorship of Mr. John McNamara, Weehawken High School's Band livened up the football games, pep rallies, assem- blies, and parades throughout the year. McNamara’s Band, as it is so appropriately termed, combined the skills of the talented musicians with their high-spirit and vitality. Leading the marching band during parades and football games were the drum majorettes and color guard, whose precise marching and colorful appearance did much to instill a spirited feeling in the spectators. The band's performances during the year, especially at the Spring Concert, gave the entire student body a feeling of pride. COLOR GUARD First row: P. Kelleher. M. Meade. G. Lepnow. Second row: B. EDITOR'S MESSAGE The creation of a yearbook is a difficult and sometimes extremely trying task. Each deadline posed its own specific problem, but all were characterized by cooperation, ingenuity, and perseverance. Needless to say that everyone associated with the 1962 Zenith endeavored to do his utmost to make it the best. With great anticipation the Editorial Staff and I awaited the delivery of the completed book. I hope that you will gain as much enjoyment from reading it as we have had in producing it. There were certain people without whose cooperation and supervision this yearbook would not be possible. I feel it necessary to give special thanks to: Progress Associates, especially Mr. Pruett, for their understanding guidance and quality workmanship. Dian Studio, for its help and expert photography. The Faculty and Administration, particularly Mr. Becker, for their patience and kindness. Mrs. Williams and the Business Staff for making the Zenith financially possible. Mr. Grazian for his invaluable advice. The entire Editorial Staff for their fine diligent work. To our advisor, Mr. Schichtel, whose merits and aid could not possibly be listed.
