First, we would focus your attention by mechanical sketches on our appreciation of all scientific study. Secondly, by illustrations and description, the Zenith staff has endeav- ored to epitomize social and personal phases of three profitable and enjoyable years at our Alma Mater. Clams and Actzwtuf Atbletzkf f1d1'6l'l1if67'.l' We, the Class of 1954, are proud to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Richard Miller. His excellent work in all his endeav- ors has won him th-e respect and admiration of students and faculty alike. He has helped to effect a student government in which the students of Weehawken High School through observing and participating have learned to appreciate the material and spiritual values of democracy. For his keen interest and competent guidance we extend our sincerest thanks. Maybejfe qHal,7Z'Oml05f9r1 AA 4 A , A A' , V A ' m. M J V,-V Vf,V V V! T VV TT i , ji .mAA ' ,, VV'. We entered the ever-open door full of queries and apprehensions and left laden with pamphlets, encouragement and enthusiasm. Miss Couled showed us that there is no problem which cannot he solved when faced squarely, she instilled faith in our capabilities but never false illusions. However, Miss Gouled's ser- vices were not confined exclusively to seniors. As Guidance Director she planned a program which helped each student meet his educational, occupa- tional and personal problems. We were made to feel confident through her efforts that there is a part for each of us to play in this world. The future will spell out our gratitude. MARGARET I. HOGAN ALICE J. GUULED SUPERVISGR GP INSTRUCTIO Why is Weehawken High up to the minute in modern education? The answer to this question is largely due to Miss Hogan. our Supervisor of Instruction. This busy lady keeps the faculty keyed to current trends and aids to education by securing visual aids and meeting with representatives of the publishers. We are also indebted to Miss Hogan for bringing to our halls the color and spirit of Christmas. She serves as a watchful administrative link between the ollice and faculty. and from this we all reap benefits. Q l 11 A X ' K I F 1 a I f I3 in ll .' -.14 gf' , P l r . Q . I f . SENIOR EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ln years to come, with a nostalgic smile-we will probably recall our senior year at Weehawken as the hap- piest of our youth. Every successful undertaking must have the direction of cooperative go-gettersf, and these words characterize our Senior Executive Committee and Senior Class adviser, Mrs. Garrity. Under their leadership we es- tablished a precedent by exceeding our goal in the maga- zine drive and making a successful Zenith drive. The Class of 1954- had another ufirstv,-remember the masquerade? Will we ever forget the frill, fuss and thrill of our Senior Prom or the lighthearted joy of the boatride? The remainder we will to next year's Zenith staff. In witness whereof, we have here unto subscribed our names and affixed our ' nt -first da of .lune 1954. seals this twe y Y , Class of 1954 Witnesses: Chief and Squaw Weehawken All the little papooses 58 Tloiy We Remem ber lt seems only yesterday we were swept along in a wave of white dresses, red roses, and senior pins. We were treading on spun-candy clouds and over- whelmed by our own importance. We spent the last moments with our classmates pledging everlasting friendships and averting near tragedies by getting an almost forgotten autograph. With the eager, possessive seizure of a diploma we severed our childhood ties and crowned ourselves with the glory of Uadulthoodv. Our years of apprenticeship in Junior High closed and took their relegated place in the past. It was a time of apprehensive watching and waiting The Spring of 1951 found a bevy of youngsters cautiously climbing the hill to Weehawken High. We were the incoming crop of sophomores come to be orientated. While we feigned a blase expression,-we couldn't deny the unrest of our inner selves. Oh, to be able to melt into the surrounding scenery! We were ushered into the auditorium to hear speeches on the many aspects of high school life. Spellbound, we listened with undivided attention and interspersed mechanical laughter at strategic moments. Then we were led through a maze of corridors and stairways until we had surveyed the entire building. Upstairs, in the Music Room, we found relaxation in the form of cokes and cookies. Free from earlier tensions, we cautiously. appraised those strangers who were to be our future classmates. We left Weehawken that day praying for an early Autumn. A gentle Indian Summer day welcomed us to school the following September. We were full-fledged sophomores, furtive but optimistic about the years ahead. Remember the first days? Confidently we started to climb a stairway only to feel a hand on our shoulder directing us to an up,, stairway. ln English class we made copies of the Alma Mater for memorization. We were a bit piqued at the prospect of having to rise in deference to upperclass- men in the auditorium, but found comfort in our number. We swarmed to the first Friday night dance, anxious to meet and be met by the older crowd . Oh, the ineffable joy of being asked to dance by a senior. We cheered the loudest at the basketball games, joined clubs and avidly scanned the first issue of the Stu- dent Prints for our names. By the time Fall changed into Winter, we had made friends of our teachers. We came to know and like our classmates and soon a number of school steadiesv were walking hand in hand around the building. The following Fall we passed our mantle to new sophomores while we assumed the title of Juniors. It was now our turn to mildly torment the new class and flaunt our superiority. Fifty-three was an outstanding year for sports. We won two state championships and positively glowed with pride. Will our relatives ever forgive us for badgering them with Christmas card sales? Some of us will be exchanging Currier and Ivesi' greetings for many a Yuletide until we deplete our private stock. As the wind of Winter slackened, talk of the Junior Social mounted. Our class was afire with energy and preparations for the best Social Wee- hawken had ever had. We worked uncounted hours fixing streamers and painting fish which transformed the gym into a magical city beneath the sean. Al- though this, the climax of our second year, was over, we knew the best was yet to come. Seniors! What other word could produce such tremors of indescribable joy? This was our year to reign. The first big event of the year was the Senior Play. Remember the anxiety of tryouts and the won- derful grind of rehearsals? We all contributed in some capacity working zealously to produce a hit, Orientals, pirates and story book characters came to life one March evening at the Senior Masquerade. It was fun to step out of our own role and become some- one else for a while. We had a rugged campaign for magazine and ad subscriptions which burst the bulb atop our fund gauge. We remember the- stardust of the Prom, the pranks on the Boatride and poking fun on Class Night . . . but added to these memories were the undeniable signs of an awakening maturity. We became cognizant of a whole world beckoning to us beyond the confines of Weehawken High, and we felt the buds of restlessness growing. For twelve years we had been preparing for adulthood, and now it was upon us with all its responsibilities. We realized that we would scatter '4o'er varied pathwaysn, and become estranged from many of our schoolday chums. On the eve of graduation we sat transfixed, mulling over these thoughts, trying to visualize what the future held, and when, if ever, our pathways would cross again. That night the Alma Mater became more than a set of words. It was sung with a tear as its truth was felt in the heart of each of us. Was it only yesterday? Time in its inimitable fashion has silently consigned these years to history. In the life ahead we will alternately sigh and chuckle at the things we did and the thoughts we had, but we will aways revere them , . . This we remember! IU. who? If lacking in certain pertinent infor- mation, there was only one thing to do-rush over to our school library to peer through stacks of Reader's Guides in search of suitable periodicals. Then one of the student librarians scurried off to the stockroom for the magazines. How indispensable is our library with all its information! We certainly are grateful to Miss Roelker and her staff of twenty-five student librar- ians for keeping our stock up to date and our library a friendly quiet place in which to study. The Weehawken lligh School Band, performing as a con- cert and marching band, has long been one of the pleasures of our school. Composed of musicians from the grammar, jun- ior high and high schools of Weehawken, they combine their individual musical talents to form a band of beautiful harmony. Under the direction of Mr, Brown, the band appears at impor- tant school and civic functions. The climax of their year's works is the annual Spring Concert for which the band has a fine repertoire. Their music has given the school many hours of entertainment, and the student body appreciates their efforts. i 95 Ld, ,U ,U h -OFFICE J. flllfq K I' Ht-rn ' 748, V'-., . Umn. This splen- did win over the highly rated Sayreville team enabled Weehawken to become the first team in the thirty-five year history of the tournament to achieve a total of seven championships. Plaudits are certainly in order for Ron- nie Corman who netted a total of twenty-six points . . . and to Bob Graham and Jack Anderson who peppered away at the nets. Steve Afferica and Bruce Pearson were superb in their defense of the backboard. Top point maker, Ronnie Gorman, was voted the most valuable player in the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association basketball tournament. A sensational shooter, Ronnie scored a dazzling total of 36 points pilot- ing the Indians to a tremendous win in the semi-finals over the much favored Cranford team. T SGCCER This year the soccer team turned in another truly fine season and narrowly missed racking up its third straight state championship. The team was highlighted by a wealth of fine ballplayers such as George Forte and Pete Schwalbach, top scorers. Standout defense work was done by such staunch performers as Ron Gorman, Arnold Zunz, Kevin McGuinness, Harry Rayner and goalie, Ken Johnson. We have every hope for another great season next year when key men like Jim Sabato, George Fahey, Rich Stratton and Frank Nagurka will fomx the nucleus of the team. They will be supplemented by other promising un- derclassmen such as .lohn Wyss, Don Morrison, Art Cer- ny and Jack Anderson.
