J FACULTY ADMINISTRATION FOREWORD Since memory permits us to pass through the looking glass of time, we can view tha golden reflections of high school days and always hold to our hearts those precious years of warm friendship, cooperation, and achievement. Each of us has threaded his own way, but we have been woven together by an intangible spirit, grown and nurtured by our loyalty and devotion. This spirit has been captured forever in a rich tapestry of past exper- ience. The staff has endeavored to give life to its colorful narra- tive through Indian symbols, which lend historic, as well as imaginative perspective. We hope we have succeeded in sounding the theme which will recall to mind three pleasant and profitable years at Weehawken. The Class of 1952 wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the former Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Urban W. Chase, for the prominent role he has played in the success of Weehawken High. The entire student body joins us in appreciation of his untiring efforts directed toward our wel- fare and happiness. We cordially welcome Dr. Neil J. Geary to the halls of Weehawken High and convey to him congratulations upon his appointment as Superintendent of Schools. The graduating class is proud to salute its big chiefs, Mr. Chase and Dr. Geary. PRINCIPAL GEORGE BECKER, M.A. This fine yearbook represents one of many achievements during three of the most fruitful and glorious years of your lives. High school days cannot be repeated but their happy memories are forever lived and relived. Your class, though relatively small in number, is rich in quality and attainment. Your high educational accomplishments are clearly indicated by the many who have con- sistently gained Honor Roll recognition. Your enthusiastic group cooperation in all matters proves, beyond any doubt, your fine sense of loyalty and appreciation. I regard it a pleasure and a privilege to have been associated with you during the past three years. Beyond wishing you each individual success and happi- ness, I want you to know that I am confident of your ultimate and worthwhile contribution to your community and country. Good luck, good health, and may God bless you! t £ k — y -£-c- ti--4_ George Becker [11] BOARD OF EDUCATION JOHN F. KIELY, PRESIDENT ■ (Left to right) Lester L. Davis, Secretary, Charles T. Here ' s our salute to you worthy profs, Who have guided us since we were sophs. With lessons in history and current news, We learned to think clearly, developing views. Our reading tastes changed from comics to sonnets, Which added a feather to our Indian bonnets. Our musical activities and contact with art, Contributed culture, a most vital part. With German, Spanish, Latin, and French, Our thirst for languages we did quench. Hamsters and reptiles filled us with thrills, Our pockets were emptied by mammoth lab bills. Too many cooks don ' t spoil the meal, For we mixed it and stirred it and ate it with zeal. We recall typing keys that would usually stick, In steno we scribbled and hoped we might click. The physical ed. classes known better as gym, Produced stalwart braves and squaws sleek and slim. We probed into cosine, the circle, square root, And discovered the frequent trig quizzes to boot! We drew many a blueprint in mechanical drawing, And in shop we did plenty of planning and sawing. With your guidance we have matured, Our direction in life has been insured. We are sincere in appreciation, For your part in our education. [20] BRAVES SQUAWS [21] ? JOAN FREDDA ABRAMS Joanie . . . amiable and artistic . . . gift for gab . . . The Class of 1952 added the Senior Prom to its long list of phenomenal successes. Using the theme of a flagship, this year ' s prom sailed to unprecedented fame and glory with Commodore Beisswanger and First Mate Chasmar leading a top notch crew consisting of the entire Senior Class. From 9 P.M. to 2 A.M., the S. S. Weehawken, anchored securely in the gym, brought its pass- engers a delicious buffet dinner, a gala array of professional entertainers, and masterful music from a fine dance band. But how was all this accomplished? The simple facts show diligent work on the part of the class to be the primary factor. This energetic group made it possible to allot over a thousand dollars to insure the Prom ' s success. These funds were augmented by The Board of Education who co- operated fully in producing an A-l affair. Main course. WENT TO SEA STUDENT BOARD OF EDUCATION Left to right: J. Erckert, N. Here is the recipe for the successful produc- tion: put a laugh provoking plot into a gay 1923 setting, add a pinch of Weehawken Stardust plus an almost professional behind-the-scenes crew. Add Miss Honiss, our own Margaret Webster, to whom so much to the credit is due. The result, a top-notch comedy. Certainly none of us will forget that night Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. Wardrobe Committee Makeup Committee A BALLAD FOR SENIORS It was way out West on the praries flat That Jess his guitar was strummin ' , While thinking of his old home town A ballad he started hummin ' . If you ' ll gather round me children A story I will tell About an eastern Injun, Weehawken knew him well. It was on the corner of Liberty, In September, ' 49, When little Eager Beaver The stairs of school did climb. Big Chief Becker approached him In manner nice and gay, Then shouted to Big Chief Chase, ' How ' re the Red Sox doing today? ' Eager Beaver filled out a schedule card And hit his books with zest, He wanted an education So he did his very best. Then he took to tennis and soccer And made the varsity team, With typical Indian spirit He played with skill and steam. Eager Beaver found a welcome From locker room to band. He made himself well known and liked By giving a helping hand. Eager Beaver loved Weehawken He felt at home everywhere ' Specially near the teachers room Where smoke signals filled the air. There ' s not an underclassman Who often does not express That Eager ' s achievements were many, That he reached the zenith of success. In his sophomore year as an exec Eager Beaver worked on the Hop And proved that even beginners Can often hit the top. Injun, Jr. was a business whiz Selling stationery to all So they put his picture on the ring Which was standardized that fall. Now Eager Beaver was growing up His date book was overflowing So he cooked up a fancy Social With his dream squaw, he was going. As a senior Beaver ' s ego grew And so did his agenda, With Christmas cards and magazines He was a top notch vendor. I ' ve heard it said that Beaver Made an audience shout ' Hooray! ' When he took the comic lead In ' Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. ' This Injun was popular With a junior or a soph And they listened hard on Student Day When he became their prof. Eager Beaver ' s days were happy In school or outside He enjoyed himself at the Senior Prom And sunbathed on the boatride. Al ong the shores of Hudson ' s waters Eager Beaver ' s youth was spent He had his fun and learned a lot He knew how much it meant. When on the stage in June he stood With all his classmates round He thought of all the happiness In Weehawken that he ' d found. Now, children, Jess said with a smile, Beaver ' s folks were filled with pride, He was the only little Injun With a diploma in the tribe. MASK AND WIG CLUB There ' s No Business Like Show Business is the byword of the Mask and Wig Club, whose activities are the writing and producing of plays and also the instructing of its members in the fundamentals of stage craft. This year ' s organi- zation was composed of two different groups: one made up of seniors and juniors, and the other consisting entirely of sophomores. In order to obtain sufficient capital, the mem- bers sold the popular Weehawken book covers and also sponsored a successful dance. The high spot of the evening! Coach Les Purvere ' s cagers this year compiled a six won, twelve lost record. The team was led by Henry Gurski, Steve AAadreperla and Don Auletto. Gurski, a jump-shot artist, garnered 194 points and 37 assists at forward, while Steve AAadreperla contributed over 200 points from the pivot position with an assortment of hooks and jump shots. Although bothered by injuries late in the year, left forward Don Auletto did more than his share in point production. Our reserve forwards were Joe Pug- lisi and Bob Hilferty. Our evenly ma tched guards were Barry Gordon, a set shot artist and ball handler; lanky Walt Forrester and Henry Drury, both rugged rebounders; and Bubby Klein, whose beautiful lay-ups amazed us all. Our Junior Varsity, who deserves all the praise pos- sible , finished with a sterling fourteen won, four lost rec- ord, one of the finest ever compiled by our J.V. ' s. AAuch credit goes to high scorers Ronald Gorman, 251 points; Arnold Zunz, 233 points; and Charlie Cavidini, 137 points. Helping greatly in producing a successful season were Joe Pesciotta, Steve Afferica, Ken Johnson, Bob Wieboldt, Bob Graham, Karl Bollman, and Bob St. Germaine. As we seniors leave W.H.S. we may look back to many enjoyable evenings spent at the gym, and look forward to a winning performance from our returning regulars and successful Jayvees, who will join them. With the arrival of this year ' s season, our netmen took their rackets out of mothballs and looked forward to what promised to be a very successful campaign. Coach Beisswanger ' s hopes for this year were bolstered by the return of seven members of last year ' s squad headed by seniors Fred Buoni, Dick and Bob Steinfeld, and Ed Geiges and juniors Peter Schan, Julius Eisen, and Larry Segedin. This year ' s team, anticipating another North Hudson County Division Championship, was also hopeful of be- coming county champs, a goal which has eluded their grasp in the past few years. It is notable that we outscored our opponents, twenty-six goals to fifteen, and were shut out only once, while shutting out the opposition on four occasions. Our fine defense was spear-headed by goalie John Looney, who let in an average of 1.2 goals per game. He was capably assisted by Don Auletto, fullback, and Barry Gordon, Donald Rickert, Phil Yturbe and Tony Trifoglio, halfbacks. Our forward line, which produced 26 goals (Jimmy Kosinski with 9; Henry Gurski with 6) and our squad of capable reserves must also be given much credit. We may all look forward and be assured that Weehawken High School will have another fine record next year. Our team, which narrowly missed state and county honors last year, felt that this was the year! Backstop Steve Durst, two-time All-State and All-County selection, who did everything behind the plate but call balls and strikes, received the slants of our veteran pitching staff. This trio from last year ' s team were seniors, John The Arm Picone and Stu Chasmar, and junior, Ed Becker. John, an All-State and All-County selection last year, was famed for his fast ball and sharp break- ing curve while Stu was known for his fine con- trol. Our infield was composed of Don Rickert, flashy fielding first baseman,- Dick Arricale, a hard hitting competitor and All-State and All-County second baseman; smooth fielding Hank Gurski at short and Flash Gordon, .400 hitting All- County ite at third base. Our outfield showed Sam Jodice, the man who gets on base; Don Auletto, rifle-armed All-Countyite and Bob Hilferty, who hits and fields with the best, in the starting lineup. With a fine corps of reserves to back up this nucleus of veterans, we expected big things to show up in our teepee this year. First row, left to right: F. Margiotta, Manager; D. Federer, R.
