Chase .... -18- ' it School The lVeehawken high school svstem is now look- ing back on a quarter of a centurv-25 vears of progress-the result of which is our own Alma Klater. Our educational unit has come a long wav from a one-room wooden schoolhouse to the one-million dollar architectural achievement that is XVeehawken High School todav. Until 1926, when VVoodrow XVilson school was opened. there was no high school in XVeehawken. Those students who wished to supplement their granmiar school educations were forced to travel to Hoboken, or, later, to the alreadv well-filled Union Citv high schools. The new school solved the problem temporarilv. but it soon became evi- dent that something would have to be done to alleviate the problem created bv the growing population and the ever-increasing demand for education. lt was proposed that a new high school be built on the site then occupied bv Hamilton School No. 3, but there were several serious di11 iculties to be overcome. Many of the VVeehawken tax- pavers. goaded on bv political leaders, declared the proposed school an extravagant and unneces- sarv expenditure of public funds, stating that the old school with some reasonable improvements would sufice. 0 lstory bill was passed. VVeehawken decided to add two new schools to its educational svstem. The building of the high school, designed by Percie Yivarttas, was begun in 1938. At the time of its completion, it was considered the most modern school in the state of New jersey, and one of the most complete educational units in the country. Every known convenience was included -the spacious, well-equipped gymnasium, the modern auditorium, the science laboratories, the art and music rooms, and various other up-to-date teaching aids. It is obvious why Weehawken was reported to have the finest educational system in Hudson County. The official dedication of the high school took place on October 18, 1940, at which time the famed philanthropist. Guggenheim, donated a bust of Alexander Hamilton. Throngs of people crowded the huge auditorium to capacity. Those who were unable to find seats flocked to the class- rooms to hear the ceremony over the public ad- dress system. VVe of the 1951 Zenith staff sincerely hope that this brief history of the NVeehawken school sys- tem will lead to 21 greater appreciation on the part of its students.
