You graduates have been learning the ways of democracy by practicing them here in high school. You have been led to think clearly and without prejudice, to be sensitive to the welfare of others, and to be tolerant of all classes, creeds and races. You have accumulated specialized information and technical skills which will enable you to work toward a common goal. There- fore, it is my sincere hope that this practice in living will enable you to choose a socially useful and personally satisfying vocation that will permit you to use to the full your particular interests and abilities. Remember, too, that it is your duty to participate actively as an informed and responsible citizen in solving the social, economic and political problems of your community, state and nation. Cordially yours, 9 JAY M. LEVENSON President f oatid of Education HENRY ROHE Vice President RUDOLPH GRIEF JOHN F. KIELY FRED SEUFERT, JR. LESTER L. DAVIS Secretary JOHN M. To the Sophomores, we leave the new set of rules, a chance at clubs marked Juniors and Seniors only, and a new batch of papooses to disillusion. To the Juniors, we leave the long hike as the late bell rings, the center section in Assembly, and a stack of application blanks and (we hope) no rejects. To the future Sophs, we leave directions to the swimming pool—if you find it—let us know. Mike Barakat leaves his job as senior prexy, to smoke his pipe in peace for the rest of his days. O'Connor, Rosemarin, Pearson, Mounce, Pelzer, Stewart, Goulian, et al leave parking space for next year's Cadillacs. Ken Rosenfeld leaves—with his brown fedora. (Sorry, Mr. Becker!) The Secaucus Seniors leave a barrel of late slips to the Misses MacCloskey and Brombacher. Marilyn Stein leaves—with the contents of her red duffle-bag still a mystery. Las clases de espanoi leave a box of Kleenex to Miss Spinelli. Richie Schudel leaves his briefcase to any enterprising Junior who wants to fill it on Friday afternoons. Marsha Lockser leaves—for Materne's to pick up Joe Senior's pictures. Mr. Beisswanger's first period steno class leaves—to find sixteen males just like Mr. B. (Think Stinky Lindenmayer can do it?) The Zenith Business Staff leaves—as peace once more descends on SSI and poor Mr. Pagnotta . Leon Fasani leaves Mrs. Oppenheim's needlework on his pants to the future sewing classes as an example of what not to do. Bob Gordan leaves his silent portable to Miss Powell, for next year's series. Audrey Klod leaves—still doing her algebra backwards. The Editor and staff leave a large economy size bottle of aspirins to their successors. The entire class leaves this space to Mr. Miller to advertise for an apartment. ----------------------- Ditto Miss Moritz. _______________________ And now with will, the Class of 1948 leaves— THE GRADUATES jLonq $4qo.. . •. . we sang “Shoe Fly Pie”, our gals lacked the “New Look” and there were many of our Senior Sophisticates who used to break into a cold sweat looking for the Bio. Lab. It didn't take us long to become adjusted to the vagaries of life under the heel and thumb of the haughty upperclass- men. Ambitious and full of the joy of being Indians, we elected Chas Holden, Heap-Big Chief; Freddie Primich, Second- Big-Chief ; Joanie Huglemann, Squaw Scribe; and Holder-of- the-Wampum, Joe Lipari. With Miss Rolfe as Sachem of this impressive Tribe council the first Social Function of the school year was none other than the Slam-Bang Sophomore Hop! However, wc weren't happy with just hit and run success, and we went all-out for school spirit by selling appropriately colored campaign bars and Eton caps (a few of which may still be seen walking down Liberty Place). Thus equipped to meet all ad- versaries, we went off to our first W. H. S. basketball game and yelled ourselves to victory time and again. Our Braves brought home County and State scalps and we really whooped at the doors of the defeated Emerson. We drifted into Spring and Miss Gouled's office to make out those gruesome sched- ules—Fall was just across vacation, now. Leaving behind geometry, first year typing and the life of the underdog . . . . . . we hummed “My Best To You” and kept the “new flock” dizzy with tales of horror. We lost no time choosing Larry Mounce as the one to lead us; Mike Barakat his assistant; Eileen Demarais, Secretary; and Dick Martin, old money bags. When Miss Rolfe left to be- come a Mrs., Miss Hogan graciously considered to guide us with our Junior Dance and the sale of Personalized Cards which didn't hurt our nest-egg any. We breezed through an- other terrific loop session, bringing home the County Crown and reaching the State finals. Our real glory came at Madison Square Garden, defeating strong teams there twice and break- ing innumerable records to boot. Then came the serious days of Evaluation when we kept the discriminating onlookers in a whirl with our diverse activities, particularly Noon Time Sing . Our dreamy Junior Prom went off in the Penthouse, with couples dancing the Montclair and Spring Romance in the air. We also had the privilege of watching the first Student Day, from the sidelines, in preparation for our moment in Senior Year and, speaking of Senior Year. . . . . . ice danced to “I Have But One Heart , didn't even bother with razzing and started in to lick Macbeth, solid, second year Steno and Commercial Law. Mike Barakat became our prexy; Doris Jordan, the V. P.; Diddy Wackerling, Secretary and Jack Kastler, Treasurer. Far in advance of the season we sold Christmas Cards, with Mr. Henry sparking us on to terrific sales. Not so easy to attain was our $4,000 Zenith goal, but like all other challenges we met and defeated this one, too. With these projects in process, Miss Beller coached the thespians for our Senior Play, Boy Wanted , which met with rousing success in a packed house. The particulars of our favorite sport are in the Athletic section but we have this extra to say for our Ten Little Indians — they were a fighting, rallying team and although not a glorious session, it packed a wallop for this—our last season. We worked hard (?), played even harder, and griped up and down the Senior corridors, in and out of home rooms. The boys didn't like the long skirts, the gals were dubious about the turtle-neck shirts, Feulner's was too crowded at lunch hour, we didn't get enough half days, we groaned over want-ads and college applications, gum chewing was out, tough tests were in, luncheon meetings, pictures at 3:10, more people selling more tickets, and on and on. We threw a Senior Dance for all and a strictly Senior come-as-you-like-everything-free-party just for the record. Student Day came in April, even better than be- fore, with the best from our class running the show and estab- lishing precedent for future graduates. The gym became the scene of our night of nights—our May Prom. It had every- thing and we'll get starry-eyed about it for decades to come. The committee pounded out class night, we rehearsed, ad libbed the evening of June 1 8th and had a glorious time. We all went seafaring on our June 16th boat ride and chalked up another piece of memory. Baccalaureate came on the 20th— Pomp and Circumstance, the 21st, and with the last lines of the Alma Mater stuck somewhere in our larynx and the thanks we owe, still unformed down there—we say it now, as we leave the ole reservation. I y iin Co A I 91 IJNDER the capable direction of Miss Roberta Beller, our dramatic coach, the senior class play, aptly titled for Leap Year, Boy Wanted , was presented in our auditorium before a ca- pacity crowd of one thousand friends, relatives, and classmates. The plot of the play revolved about the pre- college difficulties of a young senior, Nancy Hill, who is trying to persuade her father to permit her to attend the State College. His decision also holds the future of her best friend, Cynthia Moran, in the balance. But when young Harold Rollins finds himself in the sorority room of this fashionable academy for girls, things really begin to pop! But to every- one's pleasure, there is the traditional happy ending just as the final curtain goes down. The official record attained was six wins, one tie, and six losses. This year's high scoring honors go to John Mautone, who foiled the opposition's goalie seven times. Next in line are Pete Becci and Ken Reimann, with four goals apiece. Scoring three out of four alpha maters, Stan Kosinski chalked up three goals to his credit. Co-captains Charles Holden and Johnny Gurskey accounted for two and one goals respectively. The Coach compounded this year's team by placing on the forward line Gerald Cooper, Charles Booth, John Mautone, Pete Becci, Fred Kleis, Ken Reimann, Chris De La Roche, Pete Andrich, Jimmie Rafferty, Dennis Ward, Jack Gallagher, Jack Feid, and Joe McGauley. The halfbacks consisted of the co-captains as well as Gilbert Forte, Armen Banklian, James Fahey, and Ted Craig. Those holding fullback positions were Ken Quazza, Stan Kosinski, James Wanamaker, and Bill Damrosch. Making the saves were goalies Gary Kiely and Walter Groth. The job of managing was very capably handled by Fred Primich, Ed Bigelow and Eugene Smith. Everyone wishes next year's soccer team the best of luck and hopes it will continue the good sportsmanship and fine playing it has shown in the past season. 104 THE OFFICIAL SOCCER RECORD Weehawken_________ .3 St. Cecelia........ CAST on the heels of another successful basketball season comes the time of the year when Weehawken sports enthusiasts turn to the national pastime as their source of entertainment. Once again, Coach Purvere will build his team around a plentiful assort- ment of promising batterymen, so necessary to the success of any ball club. Veterans Frank ladiano, Leo Carroll, Gary Kiely, and Jim Calder form a hurling corps unsurpassed in strength by any in the county. The backstopping duties will be handled by Vinnie Varelas with newcomers Stan Carlin and Bill Damrosch waiting to break into the starting line-up. The left-handed hitting Joe Arkush will alternate with Walter Groth at the initial sack, while shortstop Johnny Stewart and second baseman John Mautone will pile up the assists and putouts around the keystone. With his timely hitting and fielding, veteran third baseman Chris De La Roche will round out the inner defense. Newcomer Charles Booth will hold down the left field berth and is ex- pected to supply some much-needed punch to the Indian line-up. Once again, Stan Kosinski will add the steadying influence of his offensive and defensive talents to the Weehawken cause in center, while right field will be filled by either a pitcher or a player chosen from the ranks of the utility staff, con- sisting of Herb Restmeyer, Jack Feid, and Emil Benzenhoefer. Coach Purvere has a squad with great potentialities and, if there is enough hitting and fielding at the right time to support the moundsmen, he will have a team capable of turning in its share of Weehawken victories. 106 A - « Scr Mscfoot V SCB0“1' Front Row: M.
