DISTRICT The challenge to our young people has never been so great in our entire historyfto prepare themselves tor competent citi- zenship-to learn to appreciate our freedomito be prepared to live for, work for. and even light for democracy. Your new junior-Senior High School will provide the necesf sary educational background for our young men and young women to meet this challenge. In addition it will play a major role in providing for our community's social, civic, recreational and cultural needs. Our tax dollar serves a double purpose when the new school building serves both our pupils and our community. The Schools belong to and are a direct responsibility of the people. A communitys schools will only be as good as the people want them to be. You have provided as good a school as any. and better than most communities in the State. You are to be congratulated. Fay H. NY'oltord Ijmiizfwzf Bmmf of Effllilllfllll ,:.... --A WEEDSPORT Cl NTRAL SCHOOL Next fall for the first time in seven or eight years all of the school children of the district will actually be in school The completion of the new junior-Senior High School build- ing will mean as much to the elementary students as it does to the high school. They will at least be in a school of their own. The new facilities will give to the high school students better opportunities than have ever been offered. The larger gymnasium shops and library as well as the auditorium will permit a much better program. The first year in the reorganized schools will without doubt present many problems and difficulties. These can be worked out however if everyone students faculty and all other person- nel work together for the best interests of all. W. F. Lampman Principal -FW-1 4 P P 'P F ifiW 2'M 'Q vig' . I have been around a long while, and I remember that first day when forty-seven budding youngsters walked through me to the kindergarten room. I remember them all well, but only nineteen continued to pass me by every day for thirteen years. They were Dian Bennett, Ellen Buckler, Nancy Garri- gan, Jan Ozark, Carole Moody, Pinky Crego, Penney Schoonmaker, Egger Jorolemon, Jack Holihan, Willie Lippoldt, Jim Sullivan, Ned Whitman, Butch Witherell, Hank Zimmer, Butch Barrows, Dick Streeter, Kraut Shepherd, Tom Short, and Fred Smith. And then that day in '45 when they left their aprons behind, and began the long climb toward Graduation they entered First Grade and were ioined by Bob Mack, Wally Watkins, Barry Downing, Alton Smith, Phil MacNabb, Gary Colvin, Gene Adams, Barb Pickard, and Eva Raner. i946-I overhead a new group of youngsters, Buff Neville, Tresure Johnson, Carol Rotundo, Burt Ward, Gordy Mau, Bonnie Veeder, and Evelyn Wanclel, ioining in the song taught them by Miss Bangs, their music teacher. i947-I remember that fateful day when they first learned to write, and proved it by writing their names all over me. I remember some of the newer names, Fred Chollette, Ronnie Chapman, Bill Hughes, Gus Gustavson, Gail Homringhouse, Earl Traver, Juanita Chatfield, Barbara Foote, Rose Pantusi, and Joyce Whitfield. IQAB-I was out front during their first dramatic debut, and I really felt proud. I noticed a few new faces, John Gilfus, Walt Sayer, Jay Sprague, Gerry Goodrich, Morris Goodrich, Tom O'Brien, Bob Steinman, Bob Wiegand, Junie Corfield, Dottie Spier, Gladys Foltz, and Carol Stoddard. 1949 They were really gettung up un the world 5 8+6f8 was on the maun agenda un the classrooms Welcomung commuttees were formed to greet Phyllus Barron Bob Suncerbeaux Dorothy Holmes Dave Bankert Bob Clark Jerry Barron and Bruce Vedder 1950 Suxth Grade I began to notuce a foundatuon for lastung fruendshups Personalutues were formed and fuve other kuds uouned the class Bob Campbell Joan Dudzunsku Theresa hooker Mary Vreeland and Tresure Johnson Cwho reuouned the classl 1951 Seventh Grade And they entered hugh school wuth the nauvety of chuldren ombarkung on the last leg of a great uourney In thus group I notuced a few addutuons Bob Alnutt Sud Balcom Ronnue Atkuns Marulyn Depew Maruorue Futts Helen Sulcox Duane Upfold and Karen Butterfueld 1952 Now they were learnung what homework was Dances fruends and partues eemed to be more Important than food But Eughth Grade proved profutable as they gauned Paul Baker Gaul Hardung Sandra Cullen Don Sauve and Blanche Bennett 1953 Survuvung the Eughth Grade Regents they embarked on theur furst money makung venture a rnagazune sale I notuced a few new students around me Robert Weatherstone Merle Gould Gaynard Baker Robert Beach Al Ames and Tom Dunham To govern theur class hey chose Kraut Shepherd as Presudent Tresure Johnson as Vuce Presudent Egger Jorolemon as Secretary and Luz Stafford as Treasurer 1954 Tenth Grade I watched them as they bravely faced the unutuatuon day' Along wuth them were Nate Marr Spencer Taylor Marue Blundell Jackue Ward Gerald Bankert John Cartner Terry Muller Alfred Green Marlene Mautland Phyllus Quunn and Jeanette Swundon Thus year they elected as Presudent Henry Zummer Kraut Shepherd as Vuce Presudent Juanuta Chatfueld as Secretary Wullue Luppoldt as Treasurer and Mr Pederson as Advusor I watched them as they put on their furst bug dance The Irushmans Brawl and watched un the darkness as they boarded the buses for the Rollerdrome and a Skatung Party 1955 Last year and theur class was almost complete I watched as Mr Pederson took roll call and found that they had added Jackue Brownell They chose as Presudent Edgar Jorolemon Vuce Presudent Kraut Shepherd Juanuta Chatfueld as Secretary Wullue Luppoldt as Treasurer and Mr Gasket as advusor I was there when they decorated for theur foot ball dances and prepared to unutuate the Sophomores I remember the bargaun on calen dars and theur relueved and happy faces the nught they put on the Senuor Ball But even more I remember the beautuful Junuor Prom whuch was put on for them by the class of 55 Carole Moody was elected Queen and Hank Zummer Kung Theur court consusted of Gaul Hardung Penney Schoonmaker Dorothey Spuer Kraut Shepherd Butch Barrows and Roy Bubbens 1956 They re Senuors now preparung to enter the worlds of busuness meducune armed forces teachung research and marruage Tnus year they put on The Sno Ball football dances and I observe they were quute successful sellung statuonery and cards In the process of becomung Senuors they lost Roy Bubbens Carol Rotundo Carol Matty but gauned Pam Robb The class was now complete un number forty two To advuse them through thus crucual year they chose Muss Palmer and Mr Gasket as co advusors On March 23 I agaun watched them as they proved therr dramatuc talent puttung on the Senuor Play They then honored the Junuors by sponsorung the Junuor Prom The story of the class of 56 us almost funushed There us nothung left but Graduatuon and the Senuor Ball Then they wull leave me forever to return never agaun uust as they were Some wont care to return and wull even forget me others wull always remember But I wull remember and theur vouces wull echo through me forever wuth Dud we wun last nught9 Whom do you bowl? SENIOR PLAY CAST On March 23, the class of '56 presented the annual senior play, The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners by Reginald Rose. It was one of the most dramatic plays ever produced on television. Studio One handled the production with great success. This story is a serious, hard-hitting, three-act play in which a group of young people try to discover who is responsible for the death, several months later, of one of them. Step by step the entire community is involved in the tragic accident. Through neglect, lack of interest, selfishness, thoughtlessness Cand worsej, every element of the community takes on a bitter share of the responsibility. The cast and actions play a very important part in the plot since there is no scenery. Except for a few chairs, there are no props. The casting was as follows: Parents-Dr. and Mrs. Caldwell-Edgar Jorolemon, Tresure Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. PrinceeSidney Balcom, Shirley Corfield, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers-Robert Witherell, Joan Dudzinski, Mr. and Mrs. Woodbridge-Henry Zimmer, Gail Harding, Mr. and Mrs. WrightwThomas Short, Phyllis Quinn, Mr. and Mrs. McGinnis-Philip Shepherd, Carole Moody. The English teacher who finally frees Kovey is played by Janice Ozark. Mr, Kovalesky, the school janitor, is Edwin Whitman. The students who are playing the roles of the court members, and appear as witnesses and in the flashback scenes are as follows: Bob McGinnis- Richard Streeter, Bert HendricksiJack Holihan, Elizabeth Wright-Juanita Chatfield, Janet- Dorothy Spier, Carol-Marie Blundell, Madge-Dian Bennett, Tommy Prince-Robert Barrows, Alice Woodbridge-Jacqueline Ward, Susan Caldwell-Penny Schoon- maker, Joey Rogers-James Lippoldt, Bill McGinnis-Robert Mack. The other able bodied speakers appearing as the painter and the announcer's voice, are James Sullivan and Gerald Bankert respectively. Helping with the props and stage settings are Thomas O'Brien, Richard Gus- tavson, Paul Baker, John Gilfus, and Fred Smith. The publicity was handled by Priscilla Robb and Marilyn Depew, with Nancy Garrigan in charge of the enter- tainment between acts. We wish to thank Miss Palmer, our most understanding director, for her gracious help in the difficult production of our successful play, THE CAST Pill! Smith, Mr. Lampman, Advisor, E. Whitman, President, M. J. Shepherd, Vice President, S. Whitman, Secretary. Standing: H. Zimmer, Treasurer, J, Skvorak, Under Secretary, T. Short, P. Shepherd, S. Weller, K. Buchanan. The Student Cabinet's tirst order ot business was the carrying out of President Ned Whitman's promise to give the Junior High an equal voice in government. Locker inspections were held and a hall patrol organized to keep the upper halls in good order. These were not too popular but they accomplished their intentions. The Cabinet saw to it that the students enioyed themselves this year. Teen- canteens were again organized and Students' Day held. A new idea that was tried was an assembly given over to a basketball game between an lntramural- All-Star Team and the Junior Varsity. Some important legislation that was enacted were two bills changing the manner of class elections and an amendment restoring tull-year terms to Members ot Congress. Definite rules were drawn up for lntramural Sports. As this was written in February, the Cabinet's work for a third ot the year couldn't be included. But it was planned at that time to give Congress more power by revising several parts of the Constitution and to probe into the present method ot Student Government to determine its efficiency. The Cabinet has worked hard this year and hopes that it has done more than you expected ot us. I 'vw X. xx N Wgj ,Y .und SENATE Sitting: T. Johnson, K. Buchanan, M. J, Shepherd, P, Tierney, R.
