The school has definitely seen improvement in all three fields this year. Congress was organized, the Senate under Vice President Nancy Blumer, and the House under Speaker Ezio Leonardi, who deserves recognition for his dynamic leadership, One of the first acts of Congress was to recognize by law President Skvorak's suggestion that teachers be admitted free to all school activities. This was later ap- proved by the classes. By studying the Constitution, Skvorak discovered that several powers of Congress had been usurped by the Cabinet. The restoration of these to Congress has given it new vitality. As a result, more legislation has been enacted than in many previous years. A Student Court has been put into action and the Hall Patrol has reduced traffic fatalities in the upper corridor. An important Constitutional Amendment provides for Congressional elec- tions at midyear. Removed from routine chores like locker inspections, the President's Cabinet has concentrated on larger matters. One innovation this year was the Tea Dance idea. Four of these were held in place of assemblies. The kids enjoyed dancing in the gym for an hour, with plenty of refreshments at hand. Arrangements were made for a professional photographer to cover the operetta, The Sunbonnet Girl, the Junior Prom and the Senior play, in addition to the usual Students' Day, when students took over classes, a 'Dress-as-you-like Day wasinitiated, Some people like strange things! ln general, this has been a memorable year for student govemment and those who worked hard in it hope this is only the beginning. These bits of in- formation and snapshots portray our lives as they are today, and will become in the future, the treasured memo- ries of a wonderful year, We have spent many long, hard hours, collecting snapshots, soliciting ads, preparing dummies and meeting deadlines, in an effort to publish the finest yearbook yet known to Weedsport Central School. Without a doubt, the yearbooks to come will go on to be still finer and full of new ideas, but still we feel, as each class does, that never again will there be a book to compare with this, for SPARKS of '53 contains a bit of each Senior which he himself contributed. SPARKS could not have been made possible, however, without the guidance of Mr. Alfred J. Horrocks, rep- resentative of the Taylor Yearbook Company, who calmly sat through hours of questions and quibbling with the eventual result, being, we hope, the beginning of bigger and better yearbooks for Weedsport Central School, nor without Miss Geraldine Palmer, class and staff advisor, who contributed her time and energy, for which we will always be grateful, toward making this, as the rest of our projects, a huge success. The Staff wishes to thank these people and all those others who contributed in any way toward publishing this annual. Our one aim and hope is that this book serves the purpose of giving you as much pleasure by leafing through it, as we have had putting it together. good changes Thrs would give our underclassmen something by which to remember us This year did away with paper covered yearbooks and had hard covered or padded ones On the cover was a full picture of the school rn green and white The ads were more drstrnctrve A150 there were mdrvrdual spot-rg pretur-eg and features Along wlth the new yearbook we decrded on changing the name We would have liked one with more meanrng something which only Weedsport could use but after much effort and not many good suggestions we finally gave up On September 20 the Semor girls had their first brrthday party We hereby made rt known at this event that every Semor grrl would have a brrthday party Be it known also thrs plan was thoroughly carried out Around this trme also we had another important event One of our girls was pinned Thrs was Manlyn Stern man She was serenaded and received an orchid from the Alpha Chr Rho Chapter of Syracuse University We had lots of work to do and we started rn with the third and final spaghettr supper It really was a success with the boys serving and the girls working rn the kitchen We thmk that one of the best ideas among the girls was the knee socks The first day we wore these was also the day of our Tea Dance The boys thought these were ternble and we almost agreed with them when about frfteen minutes after the dance started they all appeared in football socks at S U We had a bus that took the many who wished to go All who went enyoyed themselves Dunng English one day we came upon a very serious assrgnment We were to tell the absolute truth for 24 hours We decided to add some color to this by telling all our students that we were giving one dollar bills to the frrst frve people on the athletrc field dunng the morning activity period There were only five lucky people who belxeved us Chnstmas brought happy times among us all Vacation' Srngrng Carols' A party was held at Monny Bellm ger s on December 22 for the grrls We exchanged gifts and at 7 30 the boys and some of the Junrors came and we all went carolrng We were g1ven donations whrch went to the Weedsport Nursrng Home Williamson s Pansrans provrded the music for the annual Chnstmas Dance sponsored by the Semor Class December 29 With the sp1r1t of winter large white snowflakes were scattered about the gym walls and strll more hung from red and green streamers which fonned a roof over the dancers A huge paper snowman took hrs place on the stage and beautrfully decorated Chnstmas trees stood about the room To complete the holiday atmosphere colored lrghts and evergreen boughs were strung around the low fencern the orchestra s corner Many attended this gala holiday affair and all seemed to enyoy themselves rmmensely A senes of pajama parties was also held among the Semor girls The boys had their stag parties These sulted rn hrlanous fun and usually staying up all mght On January 28 we sponsored Luckner a magrcran We had a good turnout for thrs performance The Semor play It s a Great Lrfe was selected and tryouts began around the middle of January The parts were chosen and were portrayed very well There was a good audrence at the performance March 24 Next on our calendar was the Junior Prom Aprrl 10 Hal Baker s orchestra did a very satisfactory Job It was a colorful affarr at which we are sure everyone had a good time The Semor Ball was to be the last school event of the year We thoughtfully looked forward to this as rt would be our last formal dance while sttll high school SIUGCHIS Graduation just about frnrshes up our history This was a very beauttful affarr but one which we wrsh were still ahead of us We can only say we are very sorry rt is all over There are so many mrstakes we wouldn t make rf we could only stan over We are sure however that without mistakes this world would be too perfect We owe lots of thxs might I say a good deal to the teachers who were so patient wrth us We wish them better luck rn the future We don t want to waste time rn Everyone was talking, and what about? Yes, the Senior play. They were saying what a great play it was and how wonderful the chosen cast would be. The play was It's a Great Life, The people who took parts were: Betty Bailey--as Jeannie Peabody who is lovely, vivid and dramatic. Gilbert Riley--as Claude Fraley who took himself and Jeannie seriously. Skip Lane--as Russell Peabody-a senior who is sloppy and indifferent. Dotty Denman--as Annabelle-cheerful and neat, does Russell's biology. Donna Wallace--as Eloise-a sturdy, healthy girl of all work. Jinnie Lee--as Grace Peobody who has trouble concentra- ting. Io Stafford--Aurelia Audrey Wunkle -tall and long face. Nancy Whitman--Sophia Jane Wunkle-short and round faced, Johnny Skvorak--Dr. Edward Appleby-handsome and lives next door. John Whitford--George Pea- body-has trouble managing fhis family. Harry Hinman--as Larry Jordan-from college, energetic hustler. Jeanne Thompson--as Alice -bright and pretty does Russe1l's Algebra. Peggy Lampman--Miss Jacobs is Russel1's exas- perated teacher. Melvin Marshall--Mr. Pooley a lawyer. I snuck in on rehearsal quite often and g0I quite a kick out of watching them, especially how Jeannie giggled the first few times Claude held her hand, then Larry and Claude fighting over Jeannie and poor Mr. Pea- body getting a plant over his head while innocently standing by. Poor Eloise! There wasn't a thing Grace Peabody didn't'find for her to do. Then, there was Russell with his two secretaries, Annabelle and Alice. With his teacher Miss Jacobs, he had troubles galore but they never seemed to bother him. There was the time Grace sold the house to Aurelia and Sophia and Mr. Pooley came to help out his clients. Dr. Appleby was always standing by to help out the Peabodys, His attentions paid off, too. At dress rehearsal everyone was tearing his hair, but on the night of March twenty-fourth, I peeked in the window of the auditorium and what a capacity crowd. I'd never seen it so packed before! Then l heard enormous applause. I looked at my watch--just 8:15. The curtain was going up on the first act and on time, too, What--the end of the third act, so soon? As everyone was leaving I had myself hidden in the corner of the room. loverheard a great many compliments, such as They all played their parts so well N What a job Miss Palmer had, but it was directed so beautifully. Then I crept backstage where the cast was changing, getting ready for the party after. I overheard the play- ers saying Gosh! I thought maybe I'd forgotten my lines and l'm glad it's over, but wasn't it fun? As I leave you, I want to say lhope everyone enjoyed the play as much as we did in putting it on. We think that he deserves the cup, For the effort has been mostly his. In sincerity and truth we really hate The thought of his not coaching, Yet in the hall you'1l hear kids state Look out! The constant aim of this Sparkler staff has been to produce the best possible paper in the least necessary time. It cannot be said that this goal has been reached but the staff feels sure the student body will agree that the paper has been steadily improved, The basis for this improvement 'has been the knowledge gained at the Empire State Press Association convention, held early in the year at Syracuse University. This meet- ing was attended by Miss Palmer, advisor, and six staff members who came home burst- rng with lively ideas for Sparkler improvement, The most notable changes in the paper include the addition of features such as Seniors Aren t Really So Bad! and the Know Your Schoo1 series. Reporters have tried to give a better coverage of school news and typists have worked for a more read- able paper This was encouraged by the school's purchase of an electric mimiograph- . The staff rs proud of its work, but more important, it will long remember the hectic fun of putting out a newspaper, even to the rush of meeting deadlines and the messl' ,S of First row: D. After we had interviewed several representatives from different yearbook Companies we agreed to sign a contract with the Taylor Yearbook Company of Dallas Texas. Mr Alfred Horrocks our representative from that company and Miss Palmer our advisor helped us plan and make-up the 53 yearbook. Without their aid and counsel we don t believe we could have successfully accomplished it. Our first job was to select a cover We wanted something different and we found it. You see it enclosing these pages now. Our most difficult job was deciding the contents and sequence We began the changes and slowly the book was pieced together For the first time the Juniors were let in on the planning because we wished them to get a glimpse of what was ahead of them next year We tried to change the name SPARKS but due to a lack of satisfactory entries were not able to do so The class will and prophecy were dropped from the contents. This is the new trend in yearbooks, we were informed. Several pages of features were organized. These come under the heading of the Gir1 and Boy Most ---- , We used varied poses for organization Ipictures. A whole page was dedicated to our own Prof. Skvorak, as it is his last year as coach of basketball and foot ball at W. C. S. A page in the back was set aside for a Patrons' Page. Anyone of our parents or friends might contribute a small sum of money for the book's publication. Many more pictures were taken this year, of many different groups. Here before you, you see the labor of the many of the students and teachers of this school. The class of '53 hopes you enjoy this pictorial review of the 1952-53 school year, Joan Stafford J fax 77,4 , we e r f-7 X M 77,4 eg 3, ,F- MX Frrst row Mr Flnley D Krefer F Green C Iennrngs I Balch M Goodell I Frnley Second row G Baker R.
