IN TIME WE We were pysched for the beginning of the season,” said Varsity Field Hockey coach Lisa Swem, We wanted to play good field hockey.” And that they did, playing a hard-nosed defense, and a solid offense, sticking” themselves into the history books of Webutuck sports. It was September 22, 1982, Webutuck versus Arlington, in what was described to be a grueling match for Swem and her athletes. The determination and winning spirit was sparked in the whole team by Kelly Adams and Alicia Sartori as they each scored a goal to ignite the first field hockey win in four seasons, blitzing Arlington 2-0. Our reaction was that we jumped up and down and screamed and hugged each other.” stated Swem. We didn't want to leave the fieldl” The team played to their potential, taking advantage of the opponent's mistakes to win the game. The excitement and euphoria that reigned upon the team’s first win, did not end with WILL ALL Arlington. The team continued their first winning streak blanking John Jay 1-0. and nipping Millbrook 2-1, making this game the highlight of the season. With six seconds left in the first half. Millbrook lead 1-0. Kathy Shufelt, in desperation, scored to tie the game. Both teams fought well in the second half. With one minute left to play in the game. Alicia Sartori came through in the clutch to score the winning goal. Although the victory of their first win game brought jubilation, the team experience hurt. The game was against Pine Plains. The score was tied at zero, each team holding their own, but Webutuck having the edge. Until two minutes left in the game. Pine Plains scored to win the game 2-0. It hurt,” recalls Swem. but it didn’t affect our playing.” Another piece of nostalgia for coach Swem was the team's last home game of the season against John Jay. We played in a cold steady rain,” remembers Swem, It was obvious we came to play field BE STARS . . . hockey, because we scored six goals to win the game. Besides the thrills of victory”, and the agony of ' defeat”, the field hockey team experienced for the first time what it was like to have a winning season and the confidence they felt in their playing and in their coach. Swem describes her Senior and Junior athletes as leaders who are helpful in teaching the younger players skills. Swem had twelve rookies, of which four were starters. When Swem was asked, what the team meant to her. she said, It's tough to put into words. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for t each individual on the field hockey team. Despite numerous obstacles, they put forth a sincere effort in every practice and game situation, and I was proud to be their coach.” In conclusion we could honestly say, in time they became Stars.” This was the year for Webutuck to win a few games, and next year, who knows? The field hockey team celebrates good times after their victory against John Jay.
