DEDICATION ♦ ♦ ♦ The Class Of 1983 Dedicates Webtide '83 To Richard Ernst. He Is An Excellent And Dedicated Teacher Of Foreign Languages. And Has Devoted Innumerable Hours To Webtides ’81. ’82. And ’83. Without His Help, None Of These Yearbooks Would Have Gotten Past Layout. Mr. Ernst Has Guided Many Students Through French 8 Spanish. And Has As Well Been A Good Friend To All. We Thank You, Mr. Ernst. THE MANY FACES OF MR. ERNST . . . IN TIME WE We were pysched for the beginning of the season,” said Varsity Field Hockey coach Lisa Swem, We wanted to play good field hockey.” And that they did, playing a hard-nosed defense, and a solid offense, sticking” themselves into the history books of Webutuck sports. It was September 22, 1982, Webutuck versus Arlington, in what was described to be a grueling match for Swem and her athletes. The determination and winning spirit was sparked in the whole team by Kelly Adams and Alicia Sartori as they each scored a goal to ignite the first field hockey win in four seasons, blitzing Arlington 2-0. Our reaction was that we jumped up and down and screamed and hugged each other.” stated Swem. We didn't want to leave the fieldl” The team played to their potential, taking advantage of the opponent's mistakes to win the game. The excitement and euphoria that reigned upon the team’s first win, did not end with WILL ALL Arlington. The team continued their first winning streak blanking John Jay 1-0. and nipping Millbrook 2-1, making this game the highlight of the season. With six seconds left in the first half. Millbrook lead 1-0. Kathy Shufelt, in desperation, scored to tie the game. Both teams fought well in the second half. With one minute left to play in the game. Alicia Sartori came through in the clutch to score the winning goal. Although the victory of their first win game brought jubilation, the team experience hurt. The game was against Pine Plains. The score was tied at zero, each team holding their own, but Webutuck having the edge. Until two minutes left in the game. Pine Plains scored to win the game 2-0. It hurt,” recalls Swem. but it didn’t affect our playing.” Another piece of nostalgia for coach Swem was the team's last home game of the season against John Jay. We played in a cold steady rain,” remembers Swem, It was obvious we came to play field BE STARS . . . hockey, because we scored six goals to win the game. Besides the thrills of victory”, and the agony of ' defeat”, the field hockey team experienced for the first time what it was like to have a winning season and the confidence they felt in their playing and in their coach. Swem describes her Senior and Junior athletes as leaders who are helpful in teaching the younger players skills. Swem had twelve rookies, of which four were starters. When Swem was asked, what the team meant to her. she said, It's tough to put into words. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for t each individual on the field hockey team. Despite numerous obstacles, they put forth a sincere effort in every practice and game situation, and I was proud to be their coach.” In conclusion we could honestly say, in time they became Stars.” This was the year for Webutuck to win a few games, and next year, who knows? Coach Tim McEnroe. Varsity Boy's Coach, and John Vozab, Girl’s Varsity Coach, drove their teams to produce winning records, guiding their teams to sectionals. For Coach McEnroe it was his most sensational season as the boy’s coach. With his guidance, the team posted an 18-5 record, finishing second best in the Bi-Valley League. The mighty Warriors were lead in scoring by Big Mac” Brian McEnroe, averaging over 26 points a game, and Doctor” Jim Fisher, who lead in rebounding with 16. The Cinderella team made Webutuck sports history, winning for the first time two sectional games. The Warriorettes were lead by last year’s MVP Maggie Farkas, averaging over 15 points a game and JoAnne McEnroe, averaging over 8. Both teams were represented by fine talent. Coach McEnroe was blessed with the experience of some very talented Sophomores and Coach Vozab’s seven returning players, two of whom were Juniors, contributed a lot. The Expected and Cinderella” were the major attractions during the winter season. Both teams successfully competed through a tough season, knocking down doors to the sectionals. The only thing that could stop both teams was defeat in the eleventh hour. Although they lost in the second and third rounds of sectionals, they did not lose their determination, concentration, discipline and competitive edge. We are proud of the accomplishments of this dedicated group of athletes and their coaches. I STARTED OUT AS A CHILD... THE BEGINNINGS OF THE CLASS OF ’83 . . . CAN YOU GUESS WHO IS WHO? SI I. Go Webutuck! 47 WEBUTUCK GOES PUNK The Highlight Of Spirit Week In October Was Punk Day On Thursday, The 29th. Our Photographers Caught Some Great Shots Of Punked-Out” Webers. Some of the more outrageous getups are captured in these photos. Amy Honour's slicked-down hairdo and blue pumps were a real hit. Robin Farrar's purple striped leotard accentuated those foxy legs. Cindy Belas' expressions and mannerisms brought to mind an up-and-coming punk rock star. Go-gos, eat your heart outl 48 (top left) The breakfast at Webutuck takes its toll on Brian Barney. They make up the majority of the student body, and what a spirited group they are! The underclassmen years are a time of laughter, fun, and tears. It is a time, too, of forming lasting friendships. These are also the most difficult years academically, when our abilities are put to the test. We all look forward to our senior year when it seems that the pressure is lessened and graduation is in sight. JUNIORS (far left) Big Mouth! (left) What's the main attraction, guys? D. Ackerman K. Keve From Websters Third New International Dictionary Here's a teacher who traveled halfway around the world to be in Webutuck. Mr. Kiau Loi's hometown is Singapore and he's seen a lot of sights and a lot of water before coming to us as a math teacher in 1969. Educated at Trinity College with a M.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute, we are glad to have him guide Webutuckers through the mazes of Math. Mr. Loi’s hobbies, interests, and activities remind one of perpetual motion: Tennis, ping- pong, squash, badminton, sailing, skating, skiing, traveling, reading, splitting wood, chess, backgammon, crossword puzzles, etc. Who is the man with the distinguished beard looking like a college professor? He is the patriarch of Webutuck’s math department. Mr. Roger Price has been sending young men and women into life with their heads full of theorems, equations, figures, and formulas since 1962. He got his B.A. degree from Albany State and he’s been following the college trail ever since doing work at Manhattan, Vassar. Trinity, Rutgers. Indiana, Sienna. New Paltz, Colgate and Marquette. With time out to be a family man, he also finds time to attend just about every sports event and student program Webutuck puts on. He is a student’s teacher. Would you like to run five or ten miles after school every day and they go in competition running a two mile race? Mr. Thomas Pavliga has a dozen or more Webutuck students who do just that for the old school and Pav , their coach. Over the years he has coached and inspired a number of cross country champions. In the classroom, Mr. Pavliga teaches Math and seeks to teach and inspire winners in life. He is always in there going full power—himself having studied and taken courses in eleven colleges over his years at Webutuck. Pav’s a teacher students understand. For instance, his favorite quote is, It's a snow day todayl” 77 Mr. Richard DesChamps has a family that loves teaching. He teaches biology and his wife helps start students off in the second grade. Teachers not only teach and give exams but they go through a lot of teaching and exams. Think Mr. Deschamps' biology tests are hard? He went through it all too. earning a B.S. at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, an MS and graduate work at SUNY New Paltz, University of California at Long Beach. SUNY Albany, and Wells College. He knows students have to take their day’s work seriously. His pet peeves are students who don't try and those who give up. Mr. David Reagon. the Earth Science teacher, loves rocks and it’s no wonder, he comes from Denver, Colorado—the heart of the Rocky Mountains. He also loves students who drive through stop signs (just kidding). He’s our Driver’s Ed teacher and does his best to make safe drivers of us. He also likes running, reading, and eating (not necessarily in that order). When asked if he had any pet peeves, Mr. Reagon confessed. I have no pet peeves but I do have a dog and some fish.” Mr. Reagon graduated form the University of Colorado with a BA in Geology. He has a Masters in Earth Science from Boston College. You think of a Physics and Chemistry teacher in their laboratories and classrooms with atomic charts on the walls, bunson burners, test tubes, experiments. Mr. Robert Riemer is in the classroom and laboratory at Webutuck, also at basketball games, soccer games, on the ski slopes with students, in the dark rooms of photo club, at the junior prom, at the senior ball and everywhere you find Webutuck students. Mr. Riemer enjoys young people and being a part of their maturing lives. He is a tough teacher but on the kids’ side every time. When you look through a microscope you discover a world of Little Beasties” according to Mr. Thomas Kelly. who has been teaching Biology and Junior High Science in Webutuck since 1973. After taking Biology you can't look at a lake or stream without remembering his class. When he's out of the classroom, Mr. Kelly is on the courts, both basketball and tennis. He also enjoys fishing and gardening. Hometown boy makes good! Mr. John Merwin is 100% Webutuck. Born rural Millerton, he graduated from Webutuck in 1970 and after going away to College he returned in 1977 to be our Health teacher. A key point in keeping fit and trim is to keep busy and active. Mr. Merwin follows his own counsel 78 and keeps active in and out of school. He’s J.V. Soccer coach and Junior Class advisor. You might also catch him jogging up Cascade Mountain any day. Would you believe Mrs. Lorraine Laufer's home was in Brooklyn. NY? Can you ever go back to the city after you’ve seen Webutuck? Nol Ms. Laufer came to Webutuck in 1973 and has taught English ever since. She enjoys the rural life and the young people from our small towns and farms. She has taken up organic gardening herself and loves horseback riding. The 10th grade class was fortunate this year to have her as their advisor. The other half of a great husband and wife teaching team at Webutuck, Mrs. Janet Reagon can be found in room 4 teaching Social Studies. She brings the worlds of Africa. Asia, and Europe into the classroom for the students to study and enjoy. Advisor of the entering class of 9th graders in Webutuck High, she guides them in getting a sense of class spirit. She began teaching here in 1981 and is a graduate of Wellesley College. A proud homemaker, her hobbies and interests are reading, cooking, sewing, community and church activities and vacation traveling with her husband. Parlez-vous francais? If the answer is no and you’re a student—TAKE FRENCH. You’ll love it and Mr. Richard Ernst— le professeur. He makes taking a foreign language fun. One indicator of a good teacher is the number of students who gather round his desk after class, before first bell in the morning and after school. There is always action in Mr. Ernst’s room. Mr. Ernst has made possible Webtide for three years as advisor. He takes his break from work by hiking and backpacking and cooking and baking (French or Spanish of course). One pet peeve, don’t let him catch any girls combing their hair in class. Coming a long way over the years form Buchanan. Michigan. Ms. Lisa Swem came to Webutuck in 1980 after graduating from Centre College of Kentucky and completing a master’s degree at Colgate University. Along with a day’s work of teaching Social Studies, Ms. Swem finds time and looks forward to advising and working with students in Varsity Field Hockey. J.V. Basketball, Student Council, Yorkers Club and Webutuck's Quiz Bowl Team. At home she likes a quiet hour listening to classical music. Her hobby is refinishing antique furniture. Places everyone . . . lights . . . action.” these words can be heard spoken by Mr. Ron Perry as he directs the school play. 79 He loves greasepaint and directs the drama and speech and dramatics competition as well as teaching English. After obtaining a BA at SUNY Geneseo, Mr. Perry came to Webutuck in 1981. Mr. Perry is the English teacher for Webutuck's Seniors. If you haven’t learned it yet, he gives you a last chance. His ambition is to help his students work up to their potential and challenge themselves. He enjoys going to museums, looking for antiques, theatre, dance, and playing volleyball. One of the highlights of the school year for the whole community is the annual play in May and the art show. The halls of Webutuck are filled with the art work of students in every class. The quality and originality of the work is consistently amazing. Every year art teacher James Tapley pulls out quality and creative talent in every media. Mr. Tapley has been at Webutuck since 1966, seeing that the arts are not forgotten. He is advisor for our literary magazine. Focus. Webutuck is proud that a number of its art students have gone out to make a mark in the art world. You can say that George Fullerton is as old as Webutuck. He came to Webutuck in 1957. We’re glad he has been around to help show us how to use our hands and heads in shop and mechanical drawing. He is a radio bug and also advisor to a generation of student hams. He is a homebody and loves Western music and square dancing. You’re his friend as long as you put in a good days’ work. Don’t waste timel It takes years of training and daily hours of practicing to make a musician. Everyone who takes an instrument in hand must at some point begin the long training. Mr. Don Utter, our junior high music teacher, is the man at this point of beginning. He takes the interest, dreams, and talents of young people and turns them into musicians. Mr. Utter plays the trombone and will be doing an Off-Broadway Show in the spring of 1983. A newcomer at Webutuck, coming in 1981, his pet peeve is students who forget their lessons. Can you mix down on the farm life with the love of Shakespeare, the arts, and history? You sure can. Grace Decker, English teacher at Webutuck since 1970, has been doing it for a long time. She loves farming and the rural life and has guided a good many Webutuckers through the rules of grammar and appreciation of a short story and makes it interesting and a part of the life of our rural community. You don’t go to Phys. Ed class for a beauty contest in Webutuck 80 but to get a good workout and an exercise in fitness. Christine Berg is the Phys. Ed teacher and loves her work and the people who work with her on Varsity, JV and Co-ed Volleyball which she coaches. A SUNY Cortland graduate she is an active sportswoman at home and enjoys relaxing with her husband and their pet dog, George . Looking as if he could step out of a turn of the century photograph with his moustache and beard. Mr. Edward Heinsman makes history come to life in the classroom. He makes the students work in history, but they leave with some idea of how we got to 1983 and where we may be going. Mr. Heinsman's pet peeve is not being independently wealthy, but that may change if he could write his first book. A familiar teacher at Webutuck since 1974, Mr. Heinsman’s own life history was changed in 1975 when he married Guidance Director Pat Sullivan—now Mrs. Ed Heinsman. He’s the man behind the girls on Webutuck’s winning girl's Varsity Basketball team. Talk girl’s basketball and you’ve got his attention. You’ve guessed it—Mr. John Vozab is the coach of the girl’s Varsity team that is hoping for first place this year. Along with the action on the basketball court, Mr. Vozab is a teacher of English. A family man who loves kids, he has only one bad habit and that is smoking blackboard chalk during his English lectures. He’s going to stunt his growth. She is the pep and spirit behind our cheerleaders. Francine Arceri is the cheerleading advisor to both Varsity and JV. Miss Arceri came to Webutuck in 1979 and as Home Ec. teacher has made better cooks and homemakers out of a lot of Webutuckers. She’s into home ec. even in her hobbies, which are gourmet cooking, regional and foreign recipes, sewing and interior decorating. Her pet peeve is people who don’t smile.” The goal of every teacher is to guide, assist and encourage every student to take full advantage of their talents and do the best they can. Mr. John Liskey loves music and the part music plays in life. For almost twenty years he has helped make musicians at Webutuck and has developed talent. Mr. Liskey makes music fun. Raised in Pennsylvania with a BS in Music Ed form Wilkes College and a MS from Penn State, Mr. Liskey has made Dutchess County and the Northeast his home. Mrs. Nina Campbell has seen every class graduate from Webu- 81 tuck since it was established on the hill. She has seen a lot of young people grow up and a lot of changes. She loves her work as business and typing teacher and looks forward to helping young people now entering the comput- er age. Originally from northern Westchester County, having moved to Millerton to start her teaching career at Millerton High School, Mrs. Campbell is another teacher who dislikes students who cheat themselves in school. Her pet peeve is student laziness. One of the most responsible jobs on a school faculty is the job of the Phys. Ed. teacher. A teacher out there on the gym floor doesn’t only have to teach the what about life and living but also how”. On the gym floor and the sports field, boys and girls get right down to learning teamwork, sportsmanship, how to win and how to lose. Mr. Ron Keefe is a man who teaches young men Phys. Ed. at Webutuck. A good Irishman, he is doing a great job. As Varsity soccer and Varsity baseball coach, Webutuck can look forward to winning seasons. Finishing her second year at Webutuck, Ms. Katie Joint has charge of teaching English to the boys and girls in Junior High. At this mid-point in their education and maturing, the Junior Highs need a special touch and inspiration and guidance. This Ms. Joint gives to them in her english classes. An added interest is being out of doors ice skating and cross country skiing, which also leaves time to advise the 8th grade class. Not Suprisingly, her quiet times are spent enjoying reading. A lot of good secretaries and business people out there owe their start to Barbara Bond who has guided, chided and corrected them through her business Courses since 1967. 82 She wants students to learn to be the best they can be and doesn't like the declining encouragement and appreciation for the values of public education. She herself is continuing her studies in the area of law. She likes skiing, backpacking out west and promoting ERA and feminist interests. Up from New York City for her first year at Webutuck, Ms. Vi Valckenaere has jumped right into the activities at school and in the area. She is a teacher of Social Studies for the school day and then home to her family. She enjoys an active life and sports, coaching girls soccer in Connecticut, playing tennis, and swimming. At Webutuck she is advisor to the Jr. Hi girls soccer club. A city girl through and through, she was educated at Queen College, finishing with a BA, an MS and a 6th year certificate. We hope she likes the rural life and can stand the quiet. Here is a woman who just has to love children to keep her equilibrium. All day long she teaches young people English and Reading and then goes home to a family of four little folks, all quite young. Mrs Beth Willis must look forward to summer vacation. Asked what she does with her leisure time, her reply was, What leisure?” Back when she was single, Mrs. Willis went to Elmira College and then on to Wagner College for a Master's. Oh, we forgot to ask her what the pay scale was at present for raising four children. An appreciation of art begins with the early experiences we have with pencil, crayon and brush in hand. As Junior High Art teacher, Mr. Marc Goldfarb is doing his best to make the world of art a real world for his students. Coming to Webutuck in 1981. he not only has his classroom responsibilities, but after class is advisor and helper to members of the Sketching Club, the Watercolor Club and the Marionette Theatre Workshop. With some time for skiing and tennis. Mr. Goldfarb also does creative arts work at home in ceramics, painting, and photography. We are sad to see Mr. Goldfarb leave at the mid-point of this year but wish him the best in his new position at Middleburg Central. If you hear any students singing in the halls, they’re probably practicing for one of Mrs. Joanne Moore's choruses. She keeps Webutuck singing, as chorus teacher and her encouragement, help and leadership keeps the Chorus, Junior High Chorus, Madrigals, and NYSSMA vocal competitors in top form. Her pet peeve is flies in the auditorium. You wouldn’t want to hit high C with a fly in your throatl Mrs. Diane Pasheluk came to Webutuck this year after having taught Special Education at Dover. Students who display a I don’t care” attitude annoy her. Raised in Yonkers, Mrs. Pasheluk attended SUC at Buffalo and C.W. Post University. She enjoys traveling, camping, swimming and reading. Mrs. Marion Bon. our Librarian since 1973, was raised in Poughkeepsie. She majored in French Education at the New York State College for Teachers at Albany where she was awarded a BA. Later on. Mrs. Bon completed an MLS at Syracuse University. In addition to her experience in the library field, she has taught English and this year is teaching a new introductory Latin course to students in 8th grade. In her spare time, Mrs. Bon enjoys gardening and knitting Mr. Edward Heenan has been teaching Work Study courses and supervising student work experience for several years at Webutuck. (left) Mr. Keefe readies the new Universal Gym for a class. 84 Being the guidance counselor for the seniors is not an easy job, as Ms. Elaine Trumpetto can tell you. In addition to her responsibilities as a guidance counselor, she has many other duties such as working with programs for the handicapped students in our district. Mrs. Pat Heinsman has been a guidance counselor at Webutuck since 1973. She enjoys reading, camping, hiking, bicycling and playing with her children Brian and Jill. She hates having to get up early in the morning. She got her B.A. at St. Joseph's College and later received a Masters from Fordham University. She hails from Brooklyn, N.Y. Ms. Elizabeth Travis teaches Special Education in a B.O.C.E.S. Classroom at Webutuck. She came in the fall of 1982 after receiving her Bachelors Degree from SUC at Oswego. She has just completed her Masters in Special Education this June. She enjoys canoeing, skiing, rafting and hiking. Ms. Fran Tolies is the newest teacher at Webutuck. She came in January 1983 to teach Junior High Art. As a ninth generation lllinoian, she attended Wester Illinois University for a Bachelors of Education Degree and later did graduate work at South Illinois University. Ms. Sue Berquist substituted for Mrs. Heinsman for a few months this year. This story will evoke memories for the coaches, athletes, and fans. The acomplishemnts of the Warrior teams this past year are easily identified with themes. Themes that brought every team together in their respective sports, like chemistry. It was a bonding of athletes and their coaches and the coaches with thier athletes. It was the year of the three c’s to describe every team member, classy, competitive, and courageous. It was the year to winl We start Talkin’ Softball” in the spring with the Good News Bears” of softball. Although the team did not have a successful season, winning only three games, the team kept its pride up and the players Celebrated Good Times” while they had their chance. We continue into fall with Coach Swem and her Field Hockey team winning for the first time in four seasons. Becoming Stars in Their Own Time. Merwin’s Minutes Men seemed to come around to demonstrate the skills a J.V. soccer team should demonstrate. However, the major accomplishment of the season that seemed to be overshadowed, but duly recognized by the team and its fans, was Varsity Volleyball Coach Christine Berg and her diggers, bumpers, setters, and spikers' successful season. Don’t Stop Believin', Hold on to the Feeling was the conviction that lead the team to sectionals for the first time, finishing the season as the most productive and successful fall sport at Webutuck. The winter season did not start with Merry Christmas” but Together , the word that nine women varsity basketball team members and their coach, John Vozab. used to keep the competitive edge through a hectic and successful season, reaching the sectionals for the first time. The Cardiac Kids” stopped a lot of hearts in their fourth quarter surges, but managed to safely put their fans in intensive care after their many victories. Consistent hustle and skill were the major elements in McEnroe’s near-masterpiece. They got their backs off the wall, producing one of the most successful winter teams at Webutuck and in the Bi-Valley Conference. These sports participants embody the human drama of athletic competition. The following pages are Webutuck’s Wide World of Sports”. JUNIOR BUMPERS AND SETTERS Due to the inexperience of the Junior Varsity Volleyball team, and the fundamentals that needed to be learned, the junior bumpers and setters were unable to post a winning record. However, due to Coach Berg's patience, there emerged a team of strong servers lead by Joyce Coon, and Denise Schrieber and a solid setter. Donna Boyer. DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’ Hold On To The Feelin' It started out the first practice of the season. Coach Christine Berg and captains Robin Farrar and Amy Honour sat the team down for a serious sermon. Although the speech was short, it sunk deeply into the mind and spirit of each and every player on the team, to the point of producing a winning season. The team finished with a 6-6 non-league record and a 5-5 league record, placing third. The strength of this year's team was its serving lead by veteran Eileen Bradley and rookie sensations Yvonne Moss. Ninette Milici. and Melissa MacDonald. Robin Farrar provided the power of the spike and Coleen Bradley and Amy Honour made key plays on Webutuck rallies. First year player Robin Dean showed clutch performing talent. Mid-season burnout tried to creep in but the encouragement of Coach Berg and sports therapy from Mrs. Elaine Trumpetto, the team was able to come out of the closet and started believing in themselves. That believing lead the team to sectionals for the first time in four years. 92 Varsity Volleyball Team Row h Jeanne Bilquin Ninette Milici Robin Dean Coleen Bradley Yvonne Moss Row 2s Patti Gordon Melissa MacDonald Amy Honour Robin Farrar Eileen Bradley Coach Berg SPEED, SKILL, STABILITY It was an off year for Coach Ron Keefe and the Varsity Soccer team. Although the team did not bring forth a season of victories, they respectably contributed their share of skill, posting a 4 win. 7 loss record. The team demonstrated quickness with speedstars Tom Stauffacher. Teddy Moody and Steve Waite, flawless skill from two time hat trick man Ron LaCoss. who lead the team in scoring with nine goals. Derek Riemer. who scored five goals and tough guy Scott Sullivan, last year's MVP. who also scored five goals. The tenacious Brian Furey. Chris Coon, and Chris Hannon intimidated the offense of their opponents as they took charge defensively. Goalie Brian Watkins made his foes respect him as a solid performer, chalking up 136 saves, having his best games against Spackenkill with 21 saves and against Housatonic with 17. Coach Keefe. MERWIN'S MINUTE MEN Tick, tock, tick. Merwin’s Minute Men started to kick. For the first time in six years. Coach John Merwin experienced true progress and self-gratification watching his J.V. team perform. The team posted a 4-9-2 record this past season, improving their mental Team Roster Row It Greg Spinner Gary Burke Jim Clark Tyler Fenn Nicholas Glamann Greg Babbitt Row Jerry Carol Karl Moody Glenn Carol Brad Price Nguyen Von Quon Row 3. Coach Merwin Bob Cookingham David Cade Keith Moody Brian Kaye John Meyer and playing skills and showing a competitive spirit. Agressiveness and speed were two words used by Coach Merwin this season, and it especially applied to the offense of Brad the Bruiser Price. Gred Shooty” Babbitt, Gary Burke. Keith Moody, and Nicky Glamann. Awesome” is another word that described the defense of goalie Jim Clark, Jerry Carol, and the strong stopper Brian Kaye. All are wrapped up in the dedication and desire to learn of the J.V. Soccer team. hi 1 «tau MC EN ROE'S NEAR-MASTERPIECE Coach Tim McEnroe had reason to be proud of this year's Varisty Basketball team. It was the first time that the Varsity boys put together an 18-5 winning record, finishing second in the Bi-Valley League Conference. The Near-Masterpiece” consisted of the Big Mac” attack of Brian McEnroe, averaging over 26 points a game. He was named to the first all-star team in the Bi- Valley Conference. Doctor” Jim Fisher made house calls on his opponents, controlling the boards with 16 rebounds a game. Senior players and co- captains Ronnie LaCoss and Scott Sullivan provided leadership while playing a consistent game on the court. The real ignition for this year’s Varsity team was Coach McEnroe’s Sophomores. Jerome Parker lead the team in dunking exhibitions while the Pac Man Jim O’Dell, and Keith Moody banged the boards on defense. The speed of Teddy Moody whizzing to the basket baffled the players on other teams. Gaining respect during the course of the season were the Sugar Seal” Sean Coulthard and Andrew Parker. The Dover Dragons, lead by Steve Milton were the arch rivals for the Warriors once again this past season, but Webutuck was able to rise above the adversary until the final game of the season which determined the first place team. Webutuck lost the game 84-57, but pride was not lost. They went on to win in the first round of sectionals. Words to sum up McEnroe's Near-Masterpiece are hustle, innate skill, drive and togetherness. TOGETHER” D.C. 40! Veteran Coach John Vozab did not know what to expect from his nine women varsity basketball team members this season. It looked as if it would be a basketball season of trial and error. There were seven returning players, five of them were Seniors. The team was small and a bit slow. It seemed as though the only thing to do was to hope. But with the will of the team and charismatic coaching, the varsity team was able to post one of the best records in the league. Together” was the traditional theme for the team that gave the incentive to win. Captains Maggie Farkas. sho lead the team in scoring with 15 a game, and Joanne McEnroe supplied leadership and skill on the court. Second-year players Coleen and Eileen Bradley were also instrumental in the defense and offense of the game. The conviction together” lead the team into the goal Determination”, Concentration” and score 40 points”. Every game in which the team scored 40 points or better ended in victory. D.C. 40 was the adopted slogan during the last two games of the season and into sectionals. 100 The game was against Millbrook. Webutuck sought revenge having lost three weeks before to this team by 25 points. The Cinderella team caused the upset of sectionals, beating Millbrook in overtime 47-45. The excitement was beyond belief, for it was the first time Webutuck's girls had ever competed in a sectional game and won. Astonishment and euphoria carried the D.C. 40 team to another sectional victory over Croton. It was supposed to have been a season of uncertainty, but to the surprise of many, it was the year for the talented nine plus one. hell of a coach. Varsity Team Members (opposite page) Row l J. THE CARDIAC KIDS Heart stopping determination caused a lot of attacks on their opponents, as Coach Charlie Tardalo and his Cardiacs” produced the second best J.V. record in the Bi-Valley League. Experience and skill are the key to this clan's success. Captains Ronnie Whalen and Greg Shooty” Babbitt help the team in its performance along with second-year man Jamie Parks. The real ignition for the Cardiacs” are the experienced rookie sensations. The flamboyant Stephen Waite, Gary Burke on offense, and the tenacious defense of Brian Kaye and Antoine Parker provide the spark. The team started off the season ripping off nine straight victories, but was suddenly silenced by improved teams, losing three straight. However, in their perseverence, the Cardiacs” began to revive and palpitate to win their last six games of the season. That’s determinationi Steve Waite demonstrates the art of shooting a foul shot. TO BEAT A ZONE, YOU PASS Thi has been Coach Lisa Swem's reiteration at every practice since she has coached J.V. basketball, and it finally paid off. Experience was one of the reasons for the team’s better passing, shooting and rebounding. Returning players Gretchen Arndt. Kim Conklin, and Geri Jarrett demonstrated their leadership to the first year players and cooperation to their coach. Despite the team's unspectacular win-loss record, they managed to show spurts of complete ball playing to their foes, fans, and each other. Unlike last year the team showed superiority in using offensive and defensive plays, and full court presses. Team Roster Row l L. Butts D. Moore S. Schroder Row 2i T. Rockwood G. Jarrett K. Is she the coach? perservered and pushed the team making the most of the team members she had. even though there were times we were creamed.
