WEBTIDE 980 WEBUTUCK CENTRAL SCHOOL AMENIA, NEW YORK DEDICATION Mrs Theresa Bartel Without the devotion of Mrs. Bartel, Webtide 80 would never have been possible. Through this dedica- tion, we would like to express our deep appreciation and genuine respect. She has given us 25 years of her life. During this time she has shared not only her teach- ing abilities but, her unique character with both stu- dents and faculty. The Real Mrs. Bartel Symbols of her teaching career Gotcha! THE BEGINNING OF A NEW DECADE The beginning of a new decade has arrived. Past is the decade that brought the world senseless deaths, drugs, and government scandals. There was the rebirth and interest in ethnic backgrounds, dancing, wild with light and sound, new space adventures, gas shortages, and more. Webutuck has experienced changes in the 70's. Three administrations, an award winning basketball team, the renewal of an overnight class trip, and many wonderful proms are just a few. Our faculty staff has changed considerably. As we enter the 80's and look toward the future we find many unanswered questions. Will the price of oil stop us from achieving our American dream? What does the future hold for government? Will the energy crisis ever be solved? How many future farmers, engineers, or funeral directors are walking around Webutuck today, or will the 80's bring forth new and interesting careers for us? Will our school day ever be shortened by dropping eighth period? No one can predict what the future will hold. The one thing we hope as we embark upon this new decade is that each person may achieve what he wants in life and that the decade allows us to live. 4 Heather Babbitt Editor WEBTIDE 1980 STAFF Advertising Todd Clinton-Editor Carla Ciancio Brian Sprague Brenda Sprague Donna Cahill Penny Howard Debbie Murphy Layout Naomi Runge- Editor Vicki Dean Pam Berlinghoff Copy Kathy Springer-Editor Tammy Beebe Heather Babbitt - Editor-in-Chief Photographers Willow Pulver Nan Day Nicci Bertomen Sports Lisa Bradley Lisa Dahoney Maureen Miller General Staff Ronnie Smith Jeff Dunlop Marie Stocker Jane Rindsberg This year's Webtide Staff feels that this book captures the spirit of the 1980 school year. Its officers, with the help of all the 1980 students, raised enough money for a beautiful Prom. This year their goal is to have a successful class trip and an equally successful senior ball. The class of 80 would like to give special thanks to Todd Clinton and Laura Johnson for their incredible leadership of our class for the past three years. 14 15 Mighty Mouth Th© Family Tree of Wisdom And Kath. Taylor parties, and Lyle parties, too. We've had Christmas parties and Thank-God-lt's- Friday parties just to name a few. We've had people screaming, wandering, and caroling in the halls. We've put gum on desks and chairs and graffitti on the walls. We've perfected the ways to cheat on all quiz- zes and unit tests. We've driven Bartel crazy being Yearbook pests. And on 5 8 79 we broke the ultimate golden rule: When 81 out of 100 decided not to show up for school. The faculty was very shocked; the administration turned gray, For they finally knew the meaning of Webutuck Junior Skip Day. Then late the night of August 28, our class got together to buy some paint. We painted names and pictures til the road was all aglow. Then we decided there was just one final adjust- ment: The speed limit, for 15 is much too slow. For the paint we did hunt. And adjusted the speed with a 1 up front. So when you create one of these conditions. Just tell them you're carrying on. High School tra- ditions. 68 IN MEMORY OF Billy Hoysradt All but memory succumbs to the will of death. And our memories burning through that darkness Give you life. You live in that part of our hearts that is ignorant of time. As a free and unhampered spirit That is willing to show us yesterday. There is the painful realization that you exist not as a being, But as a clouded memory — Sustained by laughs and tears and timeless photographs. You have survived the cruelest cut of all. Through bonds of friendship stronger than life itself. We know not what lies ahead for us. Yet we promise that you will not remain behind. Doubt us not. for you are. We decided to wait and type it up the next day. When we came in the next morning, we found the prophecy had been rewritten and typed. We wondered who had done this as the room was locked and the prophecies were so bizarre. We rewrote them once again. We typed it up and put it in an envelope. We left it on Mrs. Bartel's desk to be approved. Later that day she asked us where we got those strange ideas. We didn't know what she was talking about. Then we looked at it and found the prophecy was agained filled with the same outrageous predictions. We couldn't understand it. Then the words, “Trust Us'' appeared on the sheet. So, due to circumstances beyond our control, here is the prophecy for what the class of 1980 will be doing in 1995. Maybe, whoever or whatever it is knows something we don't. Despite being a small school. Webutuck leaves everyone with feelings of warmth and friendship. Geographically, this region has many similarities to the place where I live in Switzerland; although, it's less mountainous here. It's always a pleasure, par- ticularly in the fall, to look at the numerous hills spreading all around. I have been proud of helping the soccer team, and I tried to do my best. I am glad to see this sport growing in the United States, and I am sure that within ten years, this country will have some of the best teams in the world. I thank everybody for the help and understanding I have gotten all year long. My greatest wish is to come back to visit you as soon as possible. May heaven help me to do it. Love to all of you. Jack Dear Webutuck, I'm really glad that I'm an AFS'er. I wanted to have experience in a new society that encom- passes people of a different culture with new thoughts. I have met a lot of new people and have seen many things which I had to get used to. The feeling of confusion I had felt first, slowly disappeared, especially after school started. Now, everything is in a usual routine: classes, sports activities and home. Coming from Ankara, the capital of Turkey, I'm really glad that I'm spending my year in a small, rural town like Amenia. I like country life and es- pecially the fall which I had never seen before. Now I'm waiting for winter snow to try skiing and skating. It's hard to cover a whole year's experience in a few sentences, but I want to thank you all who were really nice and helpful to me. Now I know that it doesn't matter where people are from, they can always share the same feelings. Love. Melike % J. V. WEST SIDE STORY The time was May 1979. the place, We- butuck High, and the event. West Side Sto- ry, a Drama Club production. The leads, Ma- ria (Ann Heinson) and Tony (Dave Shufelt) performed their parts fantastically. The whole cast did a wonderful job of acting, dancing, and singing. This is a story of an American boy and a Puerto Rican girl, struggling for their love. The play revolves around their love and de- votion to each other. In the end, their love is lost by Tony's death. Special thanks to Mr. Riemer for keeping us together. Without him the production would have been impossible. Thanks also go to Mrs. Moore. Mr. Liskey, and Mr. Reagon. There’s a place for us all, Somehow, Someday, Somewhere. v. i 112 MODEL U.N. The Watergate scandal culminated in prison sentences for government officials and President Nixon's resignation in 1974. Egyptian and Israeli leaders signed peace agreements, after President Carter acted as Mediator, in Washington, in 1979. The American people were concerned with inflation caused by a worldwide recession that affected every facet of their life and the continuing spiral of fuel prices, in which gas reached $1.00 a gallon, this made it impossible for many to make ends meet. Women continued to push for equal rights in the form of the Equal Rights Amendment and other legislation. The United States and Russia began limiting nuclear arms as a result of the Salt Treaty and other agree- ments. In July of 1976, the United States celebrated their bi-centennial year. In 1979. after being repaired by astronauts in the first salvage mission in the history of spaceflight in 1973, Skylab 1 crashed in the outback of Australia with no injuries. The first test-tube baby , Louise Brown, was born in England in 1978. Americans flocked to the theaters to see such great movies as Rocky, Jaws, The Godfather, Saturday Night Fever, Star Wars, and Animal House. The world of fashion went from mini-skirts and hot pants to midi length skirts, designer jeans, and the Annie Hall look. Fads of the '70's included streaking. CB radios, skateboards, disco, and toga parties. During the '70's many great men and women died, including: Harry S. truman, Lyndon B. Johnson. Mao Tse- Tung. Pope John Paul 1. Golda Meir. Nelson Rockefeller. Hubert Humphrey. Charles Lindbergh, Jackie Robin- son, Duke Ellington. John Wayne. Charlie Chaplain. Groucho Marx. Bing Crosby. Jack Benny. Elvis Presley. Thurman Munson, Vivian Vance. On November 4. 1979. the American Embassy was seized by Iranian students, who took fifty Americans as hostages. It has been over 100 days and their fate is still unknown. We pray for their release. 124 Happy Valentines Day! February 14. 1980 Again today roses were the rule of the day. The senior boys presented all the senior girls and the faculty girls with a red rose, the age old symbol of love. And that's what this is all about. A special kind of love a teacher develops for students, staff, and school district. Webtide '80 will be the last yearbook that I will supervise. I like to think that everyone I had a hand in shows the kind of love Webutuck portrays. Every time I look at an old yearbook. I feel a warm glow. Recently I was looking through the '67 Webtide, the first one I supervised, I wrote a poem for that edition to be used as the theme. I am repeating it here, and I hope that every time it is read it will bring a warm glow to someone's heart as it is a reminder of special feelings you have for your school and mine - Webutuck! Love, Mrs. B. The best days of life - Some sad. others gay - Often we let them slip away. What to remember in the time to come? A hearty smile for a job well done . . . A picture of a familiar face . . . Faithful service rendered in a certain place . . . A room that prepared you for life's dream . . . A medley of noise and a human stream. A reaction at a happy event . . . A dollar earned and a dollar spent . . . Look back to the best days of life . . . A promise now - that you may behold. A comfort to you - as you grow old. 125 - Theresa N.
