VALBDICTORY Mr. Cotterman, Members of the Board of Education, Faculty, Parents, and FI'iendS The time hascome for us, as a class, to separate to break the bonds that have held us closely together all these years durmgwhich we have been strl v1ng to attain a common goal graduatlon Much of the time lt has been up hlll work, sometlmes the tasks have seemed too difficult to master the burdens heavler than we could bear, but we were young, and w1th perseverance and a bull-dog determlnatlon, we have come safely and triumphantly to the fmish Sometlmes lt seemed little more than drudgery, but now that we have come to the end of the courseand look back over the years, it doesn't appear so bad after all The recollection of many happy events, sandwlched :Ln between, have somehow made us forget the rougher spots along the way Now that we have reached this lmportant stat1oninL1fe's journey, the ex ultatmon of the occasion to which we have looked forward , has somehow glven place to a feeling of sadnessas we come to a realmzation that the direct and more 1.nt1mate association w1th each other is to be severed that the friend sh1ps of twelve years are to be but a happy memory But such 15 l1fe always changmg nothmg remains at a standstill A successful lJ.fe1saprogress1ve one, otherwlse it becomes like a stagnant pool No longer aneweactive members of the Senlor Class of Webster 'Iwp School We are to launch forth 1nto the held ofneirendeavor and adventure New asso c1at1ons are to be formed, more practlcal andmore mature ones We are to enter our llfe careers Shall we succeed or shall we faJ.l'7 That depends entlrely upon ourselves Each one of us holds w1thin hls or her grasp the Golden Key of Success Fhch depends upon the wisdomand judgment wlth which each one has selected his life's vocat1on, the appl1cat1on he g1ves to lt, the perslstant efforts and doggedness with whlch he pursues lt We may learn a great deal from the Lmcoln and Carnegie and Edison None of them had the advantages of school education, such as we have enjoyed, and yet, by their hero1c efforts, they achleved world w1de fame and made the whole unlverse happler and better for thelr havlng lived Bythis I do not mean to bel1ttle a High School education but rather to emphasize how much greater should be our chances ofeuccess with the educatlon that we have Education should notendwlth graduatnon Thls graduatlon day of ours should be only one of the milestones onoureducatlonal hlghway In reallty lt should be what we commonly speak of as Commencement Day It shouldbe the commencement of our lafe long quest for practlcal knowledge and research nf we are to win the greatest success :Ln 1:.fe Now, lt is time to say farewell We shall soon be wendlng our separate paths Some of us may win fame or xortune or both, others may be ontent to remain in the modest walks of llfe, nel ber grovelmg ln the d t or soarlng to the hlghest peaks But whatever we do orwhatever we are, we hall alway look back wlth prlde and Joy at this glorlous class of 1953 May the memormes remaln w1th us always and spur us on to a greater and more frultful lnfe Ronald Moore 2h success or failure of others.
