Summer vacations are swell, but there is an excitement about getting back into the swing of school. School began Sept. 10. Students met for a half day with a meeting in the auditorium where a short program was held. The new teachers were presented and the former ones in-A troduced for the benefit of new students. Four new teachers had joined the faculty: Mrs. W. L. Boyle, music, Mrs. T. B. Campbell, home economics, Mrs. R. A. Clark, art and public speaking, and Mr. R. A. Clark, English, civics. New faculty members made it possible to introduce new courses at Webster. For the first time in several years students might study art, public speaking and commercial geography. The freshmen learned that new requirements have raised the total of credits necessary for graduation from sixteen to twenty. Also the future curriculum will be presented so as to neces- sitate four years of high school attendance. . With the first week of school began a procession of schedule changes which kept stu- Qi dents and teachers Jumping to guess where anyone was supposed to be at a given time After a long service record of thirteen years Mr V G Iackson prin cipal of the high school librarian and teacher of science and history handed in his resignation It was with surprise and regret that the Webster student body ac cepted this news Mr Iackson was an excellent and most popular teacher An event of the year was the reorganization of a pep squad under the sponsorship of Mrs Clark Forty two girls elected cheer leaders and twirlers drilled a snappy routine and at the season s third game paraded the purple and gold and gave vocxferous support to the football team which already displayed championship style Betty Ross lcet Virginia Yates Virginia Hutton and Beulah Corbin were elected cheer leaders Lela Mae Cox was chosen drum maior Genevieve Curry Dorothy Moon Weira Maupin Darlene Morris and Bobby Strasding were twirlers. Little Ianis Toney was selected as mascot for the pep squad. In addition to the activities at the games all of which the squad attended after organizing the girls conducted pep rallies on the school steps. The band in uniforms also attended the games making a bus load of sixty whooping Websterites to advertise Wi dcat victories between home and each rival's stadium. R To accommodate the drill time in the schedule for the pep squad and ac- 'Y tivity period revolving to successive periods through the week was estab- lished. While the girls marched, the football players had skull practice and other students made square-knot belts and other string products or studied. Social occasions of the first month were the football dances held after the home games. The first of five entertainments brought to Webster by the school board was a musical program presented by the Charm Quartette from. Dallas.
