School began Sept. 10. Students met for a half day with a meeting in the auditorium where a short program was held. The new teachers were presented and the former ones in-A troduced for the benefit of new students. Four new teachers had joined the faculty: Mrs. W. L. Boyle, music, Mrs. T. B. Campbell, home economics, Mrs. R. A. Clark, art and public speaking, and Mr. R. A. Clark, English, civics. New faculty members made it possible to introduce new courses at Webster. For the first time in several years students might study art, public speaking and commercial geography. The freshmen learned that new requirements have raised the total of credits necessary for graduation from sixteen to twenty. Also the future curriculum will be presented so as to neces- sitate four years of high school attendance. . With the first week of school began a procession of schedule changes which kept stu- Qi dents and teachers Jumping to guess where anyone was supposed to be at a given time After a long service record of thirteen years Mr V G Iackson prin cipal of the high school librarian and teacher of science and history handed in his resignation It was with surprise and regret that the Webster student body ac cepted this news Mr Iackson was an excellent and most popular teacher An event of the year was the reorganization of a pep squad under the sponsorship of Mrs Clark Forty two girls elected cheer leaders and twirlers drilled a snappy routine and at the season s third game paraded the purple and gold and gave vocxferous support to the football team which already displayed championship style Betty Ross lcet Virginia Yates Virginia Hutton and Beulah Corbin were elected cheer leaders Lela Mae Cox was chosen drum maior Genevieve Curry Dorothy Moon Weira Maupin Darlene Morris and Bobby Strasding were twirlers. Little Ianis Toney was selected as mascot for the pep squad. In addition to the activities at the games all of which the squad attended after organizing the girls conducted pep rallies on the school steps. The band in uniforms also attended the games making a bus load of sixty whooping Websterites to advertise Wi dcat victories between home and each rival's stadium. R To accommodate the drill time in the schedule for the pep squad and ac- 'Y tivity period revolving to successive periods through the week was estab- lished. While the girls marched, the football players had skull practice and other students made square-knot belts and other string products or studied. Social occasions of the first month were the football dances held after the home games. The first of five entertainments brought to Webster by the school board was a musical program presented by the Charm Quartette from. Dallas. K 3,49 -vm Q 3 Qu , . Girls, under Mrs. Campbell, organized the Homemaking Club, electing Lelq Mqe Cox president, Virginia Hutton, Eloise Opton and Weira Maupin also accepted offices. The year's program began with dress-making, included a style show for the P. T. A., and turned to cook- ing and the study .of foods during the second semester. Lela Mae was also chosen president of the Choral Club which ,met daily under Mrs. Boyle and included 45 students. The chorus participated in the Fine Arts Festival and pro- duced an operetta. However, the important election of this organizing period was that for officers in the stu- dent government. The candidates were heard in assembly before the students registered in the civics room and made their selections. Dorral Davis was elected presidentg Weira Maupin, vice-president, and Ieanette Stras- ding, secretary. Representing classes and organizations on the council were Charles Lamb T.ela Mae Cox, Charles Brummerhop and Peewee Burns ' Football dances after games were planned by the council but its main attention was :entered on schemes for a successful Sadie Hawkins day. Whispers of autumn through the season were denied as Websterites celebrated in brief costumes the anniversary of the hill-billy spinster. The Li'l Abners and Daisy 'Mae's returned to school in the evening for a dance. The usual dogpatch style of forward women was no- ticeable. Darlene Morris and Charles Lamb with Weira Maupin and Buddy Hawkins were chosen most typical Li'l Abners and Daisy Mae's, sothey were married and properly kissed by all concerned. This made up for the absence ofsugar in the lemonade. ,October saw the strangest new report card issued at the six weeks period. Instead of number grades, teachers issued marks of S forsatisfactory with a few H's for with high hon- ors. Mildred Emert, Ioan Galloway, Chlotiel Nelson, Virginia Hutton, Ida Lou Quinn, Melvin Barcelo, Mary Ieanne Bracewell and RhodaDee Parke received H's this year. The seniors were entertained Halloweennight by their sponsors, Mr. and Mrs. Clark. After the party most of Webster's students at-tended the midni ht show in La Porte. Talk of the 1946 annual began and the Iuniors and Freshmen sold peanuts and pop at the football games to raise the class shares on the expense tor The Web . The Iuniors also raised enough money for the Iunior-Senior banquet. The public speaking class presented two one-act plays at assemblies. In Under the Surface were Virginia Noble, Buddy Hawkins, Beulah Cor- bin, Louie Brown, Donald Davis, Betty Ellen Baker, Ida Lou Quinn and Arthur Hughes. This play was repeated for the P.T.A. with Genevieve Curry playing in Ida Lou's place. In Rising Flood were Francis Iamison, Wayne Lehew, Ida Lou Quinn, Arthur Hughes, Virginia Yates and Dorral Davis. fhe band also performed, representing the school at the opening of Klecka's Grocery Store in Dickinson. Mrs. Nancy Thomason, who had been filling in as history teacher and librarian since Mr. Iackson resigned, was relieved by Miss Ida Mae Hawkins, a trained librarian. When squad duties were over the girls busied themselves organizing Pep' an Athletic Club sponsored by Mrs. Campbell. A basketball team practiced during the lunch period and was lead by Beulah Corbin. The boys at Bayland Home entertained the Webster P.T.A. at open house, displayed their home arrangements and presented a program. He told students that practice at one's con- scious best makes perfect. Good news arrived from the Taylor En- graving Company who promised to print the 1946 annual. A different activity program was initiated. For a half hour each day students had, their choice of dancing, safety instructions, science programs. staaecraft or newspaper work. The basketball team organized and be- gan a rather successful season. The P.T.A. entertained the pep squad by taking them to a movie in Houston. The football boys also enjoyed the movie under the aus- pices of the Webster Chamber of Commerce. In the evening the season's final football banquet was served in the home economics rooms to honor the Webster Wildcats-co-dis- trict champions. Mr. Morrs Frank was the speaker. The seniors began to realize their time grew short as cap and gown pictures were returned and busy class meetings were held over the selection of class rings. The Student Council planned a Christmas program. Dorral Davis played Santa Claus for the' grade school. A tableau of music and lights depicted Christmas scenes while Peewee Burns read a poem written by Mr. Clark. A gift for each member of the high school was distributed from under the decorated tree in the auditorium. The tree was given tc the Webster Church and the students scattered to their homes to end the year of 1945. days Ianuary found stu- dents held close to school work preparing for the semester's end.
