V k - . -1 MRS. GRACE M. THOMAS IU . . . one who has given freely of her- self fo her sfudenfs, fo her family, and fo her community - we dedicafe the H60 Reveille. Mrs. Thomas, words can never express the respect and gratitude which your selfless deeds of encourage- ment have inspired in those whom you have so faith- fully served for a period of thirty-two years. Your constant willingness to help each and every student to do his individual best- has imbued us with a desire to progress to the full extent of our ability. Mathematics with you has never been a drudgery of mass production but rather a ceaseless striving for per- fection. Not content merely to meet arbitrary standards, you have chosen to go confidently beyond them. By your example you have taught us far more than a thousand text books. Nor has your influence stopped when the theorems were mastered and the equations solved. As you stretched our intellects, you have instilled in us the virtue of persistence and the desire for perfection in our every undertaking. How shall we ever forget your gentle admonition, Maybe next time you will do it correctly at the very first try. With a sage combin- ation of tact, humor, and philosophy, you have trans- formed those vague numbers and symbols into sound knowledge and mature understanding. Yet the only re- ward you have ever asked has been to see your students thinking for themselves and acting honorably. Your devotion to your family is legendary, as Mr. Thomas, your daughter, your sons, and your fond grand- children attest. With patience and wisdom your home was established, your children were reared, with love and understanding both bodies and minds were nur- tured. Still another facet of your service has been your contribution to the community. In addition to manifold responsibilities for Webster students, you have shoul- dered numerous other duties, as a matron in Eastern Star, as a member of Cornell Study Club, and as a will- ing worker in your church. These words will quickly be forgotten, but we will long remember the courage, the wisdom, and the vir- tues of the modest woman who has inspired them- Mrs. Grace M. Thomas. Multiply the hilarity and tenseness of a Student Council election campaign by its spirit of democracy and resulting sense of responsibility. Measure the volume of integrity and justice with the scales of applied truth. Divide athletic competitions into a given quantity of fair play and balance the quotient with eight vivacious cheerleaders. Compute the ratio of the gaiety of dances by the beauty of their queens and the prowess of their kings. Total up the dividends in terms of school spirit and lasting friend- ships. Subtract the physics experiments that wouldn't quite work out and those endless cafeteria lines. Estimate instead the percentage of knowledge ab- sorbed and the patience and consistent quality of cafeteria service. Count the teachers whose devotion. far exceeded the average in time and help- fulness. Add that all-pervading we dare to be different motto. Sum up the strides forward in scholarship, the Roman cenas, the dramatic productions, the initiations, the individuals and the groups who brought honors to WCS. At this time Donna Mid- dleton, advertising manager, with the help of James Bramer, business manager, sends her committee out to beg, borrow, or steal myriads of ads. Next comes the photographer who takes picture after picture, including the all-important senior por- traits. Things are really rolling when Kathleen Mad- den's literary committee turns out grinds and copy. After the copy is worked over and edited, it is handed to the typists under Dorothy Lohrman's direction. Early in February Patricia Van Gysel and her am- bitious circulation group sell subscriptions to WCS students. Meanwhile Sandra Grabowski and her fellow artists are creating divider pages and other decorations for the volume. In the midst of all this activity, editor Nancy Moore and advisers Miss Kathleen Goetten and Mrs. Claudia Sayler concentrate on remaining sane. The story has a happy ending, however. In June the class of 1960 proudly presents its yearbook to the students of WCS. LIBRARY CLUB-Fourth Row: J. Newton, C. Wltite, C. Walker, j. Bouchard, P. Vragel, N. Moore, H. Sweezey, M. LIBR RY CL B This year's theme for Library Club was Over the Rainbow. It brought with it many opportunities to reach toward that pot of gold . Talks on The Homemaker of Today, Interior Dec- orating as a career, and What It Entails To Be an Author were among the topics explored by the library clubbers on Fri- days, fifth period. Book discussions and talks on foreign coun- tries added to the year's program. Each of the forty-eight members worked one period a week in the library assisting Miss Helena Growney, and occasionally the entire club participated in a service meeting. The mothers and daughters' tea, the Christmas party, and the house party were the highlights of the club's social events. Installation of new officers and the overwhelming job of book inventory brought the 1959-60 library club season to a successful end. LIBRARY CLUB OFFICERS 8: ADVISER- Clocbwise: R. Terada, C. One of their first projects was making copper enameled jewelry which later served as Christmas gifts. Other individual projects, such as sketching, sculptoring and mosaics, were displayed in the cafeteria hall showcase. Business meetings during the year were con- ducted under the leadership of Birgit Peters, pres- ident, Nancy Dibble, secretary, Nancy Fields, treasurerg and Mrs. Claudia Sayler, faculty adviser. PLOT Ruth and Ellen Sherwood venture across the country from Columbus, Ohio, to New York City in search of a bright, new future. Ruth has literary ambitions, Eileen theatrical ones. An uncomfortable Greenwich village flat, plagued by the blasting and drilling operations of the Department of Public Works sets the scene for the bizarre events which follow their arrival. No sooner are they persuaded to rent the fiat than the deafening blasts begin-right underneath them! In addition, strange friends of the previous tenant are constantly dropping in. Since the couple upstairs are secretly married, the husband finds it necessary to hide in the girls' apartment during the day. Financial problems haunt them, and neither has any success finding a job. Their involvement with six Peruvian coffee mil- lionaires, lands Eileen in jail and threatens to jeop- ardize international relations. However their father arrives on the scene just in time, and everything ends happily and hilariously. CAST Eileen Sherwood .......... ........ J udy Popovici Ruth Sherwood ...... ........ The Band Spirited marches and school songs stirred football crowds to excitement as the Webster high school band made its entrance into another active year under the direction of Mr. Eugene DeWitte. November found two instrumentalists, Marc Schneider and Richard Ely, participating in the All-State Band, which played at lrondequoit this year. Lively numbers provided a background for the National Honor Society's tapping ceremony in january. Inspiring is the word to describe the performances of the Band at both the Christmas and spring concerts. Certainly this remark of a student, Pm proud to hear our band play, is typical of the way Websterites feel about this school organization. and Orchestra When the regional all-state orchestra was formed in November of 1959, Web- ster was able to provide six students with the opportunity of playing with this group. Sally Bailey, Merry jill Flora, Linda Burtner, Julie Bailey, James Bramer, and Terry Flora were the first WCS students to participate in the orchestra. Director Eugene DeWitte and his 24 orchestra members furnished entertain- ment at many functions while they gained valuable experience. Unusual skill was displayed at both the annual Christmas and spring concerts. 55 Mr. Eugene DeWitte Director GIRLS CHORUS-Fourth Row: L. Dobbin, G. Koch, J. Benetti G. Curtis, L. Mechetti, D. A newly-formed girls' octet combined voices with the boys, octet to further the holiday mood with song. Six members of the mixed chorus had the privilege of being chosen for the regional sing at lrondequoit in the late fall. Donna Middleton, Kathleen Madden, Karen Ross, James Schleifer, Robert Vat, and Terry Brush were among the students who practiced for two days and then presented a concert for parents and friends. This event provided experi- ence in co-operative singing. WCS welcomed a new director of music to the system, Miss Jasmine Hull. Under her direction the 1960 spring concert was a great success. After winning numerous honors at the County and State Fairs this summer, and in the Leadership Training School this fall, the Web- ster FFA returned from the Roches- ter Horticulture Show in January with fresh laurels. A team, made up of Thomas Cleary, Thomas Herbst, and David Smith, won a silver cup as first prize in the apple grading contest. The Webster boys also won second prize in disease identification and exhibiting apples, and third prize in apple judging. This year adviser Mr. E. I. Membership totaled 31 after the initiation banquet. The girls' first big project was selling refreshments at basketball games, where they earned enough to build a substantial treasury. Field trips provided valuable experi- ences as well as fun. The year was ended with a picnic which proved as successful as the other activities. PROJECTIONISTS Throughout the year at WCS one service which often goes unnoticed in the darkness of the auditorium is that of the projectionisr. Although everyone enjoys a movie, few fully appreciate the organization necessary to provide a projectionist whenever one is needed. VARSITY FOOTB LL The Ridgemen, under the direction of head coach Mr. Coit Conant and assistant Mr. jack Harten, cli- maxed a good football season with a five won, two lost record in conference action and a tie with McQuaid in a non-league encounter. Spearheaded by co-captains Allan Courtright and Gary Aceto, the Ridgemen became known as a tough, well-conditioned unit. Early in the season the gridders traveled to Camp Cory on Keuka Lake. Here they spent a week of rugged conditioning, skull sessions, and bruising contact, getting ready for the opener with Fairport. In the opening game Fairport edged the Ridgemen, 13-12, in 90-degree temperatures. This game saw the first use of the new bleachers on the football field. The Ridgemen came back with a 39-19 clubbing of LeRoy and a 20-7 upset of previously undefeated Brockport. In the most exciting game of the year Web- ster scored with only a minute to play to defeat Newark, 20 to 19, on Newark's gridiron. The mud proved to be too much for both Webster and McQuaid as the non-league game ended in a score- less deadlock. The next two games saw the Ridgemen crush Irondequoit, 52-6, and roll over East Rochester, 27-0. In what could have been the most exciting game of the year, if weather conditions had been different, the Ridgemen suffered a 25-6 setback at the hands of an undefeated Brighton eleven. In the annual all-conference selection, the Ridgemen placed Jim Cripps and jim White on the first team, Ken Clark, Don Mayeu, and Al Courtright on the sec- ond team, with Bob Writz making honorable mention. Ken Clark also received the most valuable player award. 64 VARSITY SCORES Webster Opponents 12 Fairport 15 39 LeRoy 19 20 Brockport 7 20 Newark 19 0 McQuaid 0 32 Irondequoit 6 27 East Rochester 0 6 Brighton 25 W Standing: G. Mr. Terbush combines patience and skill in teaching these boys the fundamentals of football, Most of them have had little or no experience in this rockem-sockem sport and within a three-week span they will feel the contact of an unknown but determined foe. This season the little Ridgemen won two and lost five, although their record could easily have been reversed because several of the games were so close that they could have gone either way. In their first regular season of competition, the Webster track team, coached by Mr. Seymour Eggleston, went unde- feated in their nine league meets. Despite this, the Ridgemen placed second in the league, behind Brighton, because of their second-place finish in the Monroe County Tournament. The tracksters took Fairport in their first meet of the year, 58 to 285 squeaked by Brighton, 50 to 455 and easily downed Churchville-Chili and Spencerport in a triangular meet. Transportation failure cancelled the Honeoye Falls meet but the Ridgemen roared on, taking Penfield, Pittsford, Brockport, Batavia, McQuaid, and Fairport for a 9 and 0 record. At the county tournament the Webster speedsters took three firsts. Winston I-Iatt remained undefeated by winning the 180-yard hurdles as did Jan Senecal in the 880-yard race, while Webster's great relay team chalked up another win. The Eggleston men hope for a repeat performance this year and with many veterans returning, their chances are good. VOLLEYBALL Volleyball, as always, captured the interest of boys and girls alike in gym classes and during noonhour. Each year a team of experts, under the watchful eye of Coach Seymour Eg- gleston, competes in the Monroe Coun- ty Tournament. Last year the boys took the county crown but lost in the finals of the sectionals for a creditable second- place finish. With many veterans returning, the team is looking forward to the possi- bility of gaining a sectional win this year. GOLF For the first time in many a year, the Ridgemen fielded a golf team, un- der the direction of Coach Herbert Hatt. All the participants enjoyed the practice sessions on the sun-bathed Happy Acres course-especially when they found they didn't have to pay. The Ridgemen displayed several fine wins in competition and, with the re- turn of many veterans, are aiming at the crown this year. K. Clark, D. Mayeu, D. Uetz, K. Backman, J. Williams, R. GIRLS' SPURT With more than 7511, of Webster girls participating, the well-rounded sports program, under the direction of Miss Joyce Maunder, has proved that sports at WCS are not confined to the boys. In basketball the girls have won the county sports- day for two consecutive years. These monthly tourna- ments are participated in by four other schools besides Webster, and include all intramural sports. Volleyball and bowling seemed to be the most pop- ular among feminine athletes. Scores of 190 and 185 have caused many a scream at Empire Lanes. The spring sport of track was added at Webster in 1959. Although it was unfamiliar, the girls took first place in the ball throw, broad jump, and high jump at the county sportsday.
