During the thirty-two years in which you have guided the destinies of our alma mater, you have taken the initiative in enlarging the curriculum, adding facilities, and building schools to keep pace with the rapidly expanding enrollment. You are the architect of our greater school, which, happily for us, bears the mark of your vision and leadership. As Emerson wrote, An institution is truly the lengthened shadow of a man. Always concerned with the quality of education offered at Webster, you have consistently sought to raise academic standards by hiring teachers of the highest calibre, by making available essential materials, and by furnishing the necessary administrative leadership. Your genuine respect for scholarship has inspired us to work to maximum capacity, to take pride in our efforts, and to have a high re- gard for learning. Your interest in people has extended beyond the school into community affairs where you have always stood for the highest ideals of conduct. As one of the founders of the public library, as a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Grange, the Rotary Club, and the Chamber of Commerce, you have exerted infiuence on the entire area. If any man deserves the title of Mr. Webster, it is you. Your integrity, your tolerance, your fair- mindedness have been strong incentives to about 1915 sportsmanship. By your genuine interest in us, your friendliness, your generosity in spending yourself for the welfare of this school and community, Mr. Thomas, you have won a permanent place in our hearts and in the with Peter annals of Webster. We shall always remem- ber the gentlemanly scholar who directed our school. Mr. Thomas . . . t with grandchildren at the 1947 carnival V ii t if L- - -f -I , T 'W r-i ff i 7-f Y - ' . As we look Through the Knotholef' of the 1959 Reveille, we see the exciting and rigorous game of education as it is played in Webster Central. While scholarship, our principal objective, has been pursued daily in our regular classes, versatility has been afforded by the many clubs and organizations that have helped us to become educated socially as well as intellectually. Sportsmanship has been exem- plified and encouraged by the splendid teams that represent WCS and by the extensive in- tramural program for both boys and girls. While we consider the varied phases of our school life, poignant memories crowd our minds. We recall the fine friends and good times that have filled our high school days. Most of all we remember that it was in the halls of WCS that we made our greatest strides as we grew in stature and in wisdom. Wm THE I 959 KNUTHOLE STORY FRESHMAN YEAR In a backward glance through the knot hole, we see the class of 1959 at the beginning of their high school career as lowly fresh- men. Under the direction of ofli- cers Ann Morgan, Murray Jenner, Sharon Young, Gail Wackerow, Judith Nowrocki, and John Keim, they soon begin to take an active Promotion Department lMagazine Salel part in school life. Stairway to the Stars is the theme of the freshman dance, first social event of the class. SUPHOMDRE YEAR When we next see the the class of 1959, they are entering their second year of high school and After all, that hoop must be decorated. are gaining in stature and wis- dom. Ofiicers David Robinson, Pamela Middleton, Margaret Na- gle, Sally Brewer, Judith Now- rocki, Judith Barron, and David Suberville lead the sophomores With this kind of staff, how can you miss? as they join clubs and crowd their social calendar. The month of March is marked by their gala dance, Over the Rainbow. Next comes the campaign for oiiicers 34 Big Wheels of Sales Department of Student Council, with Thom: McClashan emerging as Vict president of Student Court an chairman of the newly-forme Safety Council. There's one in every game. .IUNIDR YEAR Members of the class of 195 are now upperclassmen, revellir in their new status. SENIOR YEAR This time we gaze upon the class of '59 with sadness, for we realize they must soon leave the halls of WCS. The year is packed with activities supervised by Christopher Eckel, David Robin- son, Sally Brewer, Sharon Young, Judith Barron, Steven Schmidt, Jan Senecal, John Hayslip, Mar- go Jeary, and Ellin Lasher. .Judith Nowrocki becomes high salesman 35 If you guys would push a little harder . . . in the September magazine cam- paign, held to finance the year- book. December sees the presen- tation of the senior play, Nuts in May, starring Ellin Lasher and James Boyle. To bring their social activities to a dramatic climax, the class of 1959 stages their lavish senior ball in May. As we look through the knot hole for the last time, we see 162 seniors, clad in caps and gowns, as they proudly receive their diplomas. We wipe away a tear as we wish them all a bright, happy future. The first duty of these new members was to direct students and parents dur- ing Higher Education Night, held in November. Under the leadership of president .lan Senecal, vice-president Nancy Mayo, secretary Carol Rissber- ger, treasurer Pamela Middleton, and adviser Miss Eleen Garnett, members checked coats at basketball games and presented the annual sports mixer. Student Court The Student Court has just terminated its first complete year of jurisdiction in WCS under the di- rection of Richard Webster, senior judge, David Garn- ham, junior judgeg Sharon Young, recording secre- taryg Jeffrey Bradstreet, bailiiig and Miss .ludith Lowe, adviser. This was a year for establishing precedents in the court chambers. Public trials were held with lawyers, witnesses, four jury members, and regular court procedures. With the support of the students, this judicial body may well become the most democratic branch of student government in Webster Central. 47 J. Bradley, A. Portanova, A. Morgan, G. Hartman, K. With Barbara Kittelberger as editor-in-chief, assisted by Linda Frank and Amy Portanova as business managers, the 1959 Reveille began to take shape. Sue Gardner, John Elter, Ann Morgan, Sherry Young, Nancy Caudle, and Linda Armes were busy as chairmen, while their committees wrote stories, checked footlights, scurried after ads, scribbled down subscriptions, drew illustrations, and pounded typewriters. Albright l l Varsity Football Closing the 1958 season with a disappointing record of one win and seven losses, the Webster gridders failed to attain pre-season expectations. The squad was harassed throughout the season by injuries and sub-par playing. Although held winless in their first six ball games, the team showed a considerable amount of spirit, especially in the second period of play. The home team,s opponents found second half scoring difficult, and had to scrap hard to keep Webster from a comeback. In a thrilling game at lrondequoit the Ridgemen flabbergasted the IHS defense to score three touchdowns, and almost nip the confident Indians who won by a slim, two-point margin. Webster's lone win of the season was tallied against East Rochester, whom the Blue and White eleven held scoreless. A first- half TD was the inspiration which paved the way for the WCS victory in a well-played, home-field contest. Since many players on the starting eleven were uuderclassmen, the fine coaching staff of Mr. Oscar Cochi, Mr. John Harten, and Mr. Coit Conant, expect to have a more successful season next year. Some of the boys had never played or- ganized football before and' there was con- siderable lack of size in the line-up. Al- though they didn't win one of their seven ball games, the .lunior Ridgemen did their utmost with the experience they gained from practices. The squad never gave up, but showed fine spirit by playing every game to their capacity. Coaches Robert Rocco and Robert Ter- bush feel that the team succeeded in ac- quiring a knowledge of the fundamentals of football and in developing skills and sportsmanship. Coming at the end of a Hve-game winning streak, Web- ster's defeat of the Indians crowned a season record of ten wins and four losses. Playing heads-up ball throughout the schedule, the Hattmen were leading contenders in the league. Coach Herbert Hatt and his assistant, Mr. John Harten, expect to continue winning this year since a strong nucleus of the 1958 team will return to the squad. WCS's two ace pitchers, Andy Kachmaryk and Ken Immesoete, were voted to the 1958 All-County team. A, Kachmaryk, W. Kehrig, S. Rauher. Top Row: Mr. S. Eggleston, J. Hayslip, J. Bradstreet, J. Although team members will be new to the sport, a good season is expected because of the natural ability and talent of the prospective competitors. ennis With four starting players from last year returning to the courts, reinforced by a strong band of re- serves, the 1959 tennis team optimis- tically aims towards a victorious season. Veterans Dick Long, Dick Boyd, Mark Vande, and Brian McHugh will be the backbone of the team as they face inter-scholastic compet- itors in double and singles matches throughout the area. Instructing the enthusiastic court- men will be Mr. Robert Cobbett in his second year as Webster's varsity tennis coach. 73 Standing: B. McHugh, M. Vande, R. Stevens, R. Long, F. Stock, M. Aiming for its third straight county sweep and also a sectional championship, the team will complete two weeks of practice before the first team is chosen. With many experienced players returning, Coach Eggleston expects to send a strong team into the tournament. The probable starting team will include Stevens, Backman, Vande, Christian, Hayslip, and Jenkins. . Tap Raw: W. Hildebrand, M. Vande, D. Newton, R. Armes, J. Short, R. Burlew, T. Powers, R. The Blobs were the top team in the league with the Rebel Rousers in second place. Members of the winning team were Bob Wright, Steve Schmidt, Ron Yaeger, Dave Suberville, and Bob Mead. Eighth Grade BaskethaH Under the guidance of Coach Fred Brown, future prospects for Webster teams were given a chance to gain experience in an eighth grade basketball league. TumhHng Enthusiastic amateur tumblers had to be chased out of gym classes after the bell for the next class had rung, during the four weeks of winter gymnastics. Basic skill in tumbling exercises were developed and. several members of the classes became experts on the trampoline. A special treat was a trip to Syracuse to attend a tumbling match between Spring- field College and Syracuse University. Although winning only two games, the team showed much promise as it defeated Fairport in a rough skir- mish, and played well against league champs, Rush- Henrietta. Ping Pong Interest in ping pong has been stimulated this year by the introduction of many noon-hour singles and doubles tournaments. Here all the players have gained valuable experience for the county competition. Coach Seymour Eggleston pins his hopes on Dave Albright, with two years' tournament experience, and newcomers Dick Ely and John Heaphy. J. Heaphy, D. Perry, R. Ely, D. Albright, E. Loeser, H. Zettl. Many ar- rows whizzed through the air, completely ignoring the target, of course. Nevertheless the girls participated with enthusiasm and patience, mastering the game and enjoying the sport. Feminine tennis enthusiastis, experienced and learning, crowded the courts this spring, having fun and chalking up victories. Ex- citing games were held as the tennis season climaxed another sports year. As softball players took their positions around the diamond, many an eager partici- pant shouted, Play ball! Batters aimed for home runs while lielders rified the ball across the diamond. Spirited interest in intramurals continued as the school sports year drew to a close. SOFTBALL Top Row: M.
