Ill Ill Ili Ill THE FORWARD LOOK q't I ll ll As a rocket is launched from the ground to soar upward to unknown heights, so we, the class of 1958, leave our alma mater as we prepare to make a path into new experiences. The vapor trail we leave behind is a mist of memory that includes the well-remembered and much-loved traditions of Web- ster Central School and all those persons and factors that have gone to make our high school education the fine preparation we feel it has been. The senior class presents the 1958 Reveille with the Forward Look . 2 ' 1 . My ALMA MATER Where the Ridge Road forms a border For the lake and sky, Proudly stands our Alma Mater, Dear old Webster High. CHORUS Flag of WHS, float for aye, Old Webster High, o'er thee, May thy sons be leal and loyal To thy memory. When the evening twilight deepens And the shadows fall, Lingers long the golden sunset On thy western wall. CONTENTS Administration page 5 Classes page 13 Activities page 43 Athletics page 63 3 if? 4-a DEDICHTION To Mr. Ralph W. Martin, principal of Webster Central High School, we dedicate our 1958 yearbook. Directly or indirectly Mr. Martin has influenced the lives and activities of every one of us. With sound judgement he has aided us in solving our problems, both large and small. With wise counsel he has guided us on our educational journey, guard- ing us against too hasty a take-off and encouraging us to lay a sound foundation by adequate prepara- tion before we launch ourselves into the future. When, in adult life, we are called upon to cope r with difficult situations, we shall remember his sense of fair play, his willingness to hear both sides of a question, and his kindly advice, often given by means of a humorous illustration. We shall be mo- tivated by the high ideals which were the basis of his policies and which were often expressed in the short inspirational messages which he included in the daily announcements on appropriate occasions. May his guiding influence, which we treasure so highly, continue to affect the education of W C S students for many years to come. l l F 4 J Lxkgi Tlow x x . M 1 M- M.. .M Pi. A 4 Y 63 Mrs, Mary H. Like a trustworthy ground crew, they attend to the innumerable details essential to the final launching of the Rocket Ship, Class of 1958. Mr. Stanley H. Martin President , x 'fast ., BOARD OF EDUCATION Like true scientists, members of the Board of Education of the Webster Central School District have long ex- emplified The Forward Look. Their willingness to see the need for an im- proved educational plant with new buildings, an enlarged faculty, and ca- pacity for expansion is evidence of this. We who have benefitted by the ad- vantages offered here are indeed grate- ful to the Board of Education for their wisdom and to the community for their generosity. Mrs. D. Elliott, Mrs. J. McCrary, Mrs. D. Abbott, Miss G. Viele, Mrs. T VanAlstyne, Mrs. M. Bolthouse, Mrs. V. Berg, Mrs. E. Lasher, Mrs. L Cornwall. 6 MR. ROBERT L. THOMAS On the desk of Mr. Robert L. Thomas, principal of the Webster Central School District, as on the drawing board of a top-flight designer, all the plans for a greater Webster Central School system have taken shape. Under his direction these dreams have become realities for the students of this district. This type of vision, so important to the welfare of a school system, is combined in Mr. Thomas with personal qualities which have endeared him to both students and teachers. His quiet dignity, his genuine interest in each of us, and his devotion to the highest educational goals are typical of his Forward Look . HDMINISTRHTIDN MR. HERBERT W. SCHROEDER Mr. Herbert W. Schroeder, assistant princi- pal of the Webster Central School District, is new to this system. In the brief time we have known him we have come to feel that he is also a man with a Forward Look , treasuring what' is worthwhile of the traditional while adopting what is valid of the new. MR. RALPH W. MARTIN As the launching date approaches and ac- tivity at all levels is intensified, many problems arise. In the manner of an expert trouble- shooter, Mr. Ralph Martin, principal of the high school, gives these matters his calm atten- tion. Such is his ability and understanding that the difficulties are soon overcome and the space ship ready for her upward thrust. Mrs. Helen L. Barton Mr. Richard J. Batzing Mr. Charles F. Brown r. Thus, the class of 1958 began its mobile years as freshmen at WCS, with ollicers Ronald Fisher, Diane Young, Georgene Meyer, and Carol Battey. This year wrought many changes as the freshman essays took their toll. Celebrating the completion of the essays came the frosh tea with its Indian theme. The freshman dance, Neptune's Kingdom, began the class of 1958's ever- busy social life. Sophomore Year He who knows not and knows he knows not, he is simpleg teach him. This well describes the class of 1958 as sopho- mores, as they entered their second mobile year of high school, anxious to learn more about the ways of upperclassmen. Oliicers Richard Leone, Philip Johnson, Mary Ann Tygert, and Carol Battey headed the soph- omores as they joined clubs, starred in junior varsity sports, and studied furi- ously to pass Mr. Cochi's history tests. Highlight of the busy year came with the soph dance, Fantasy In Pink , on whose fascinating pink flowers, lambs, and streamers Virginia Fry's committee spent many long hours of work. As the end of an active year drew near, seven vivacious and sparkling junior var- sity cheerleaders were choseng Gail Mc- Guire was elected vice-president of the next year's student councilg Julie Everitt and David Kohler won the class prizesg then we realized that soon we would be upperclassmen. 30 Iunior Year He who knows, and knows not that he knows, he is asleep, wake him. As juniors, the class of 1958 was thrown into the hectic life of superior upperclass- men with officers Stuart Rauber, Gail johnson, Robert Curtis, and David Bliek. Dreamers' Holiday was the perfect theme for the junior Prom on Thanksgiv- ing Eve. In late November twelve members of the class were chosen to join the ranks of the National Honor Society. In April try-outs were held for the junior play, The Little Dog Laughed , which starred Susan Bartusek as a physcology-mad col- lege girl. As the year drew to a close, the juniors previewed their own graduation by serv- ing as commencement ushers for the class of 1957. Senior Year He who knows and knows he knows, he is a leaderg follow him. As the doors of room No. 24 re-opened in September, 118 students were astonished to discover that they were seniors. Under the direction of Judith Ross, the senior class sold enough magazine subscriptions to finance their yearbook. Leading the class as high salesman was Amy Berlove. Following close on the heels of the magazine campaign came the senior play, Around the World in Eighty Days. Starring john Gruger and Stuart Rauber, the production was received by a full house. Throughout the year seniors were kept frantically busy with their many activities, both scholastic and extra-curricular. In May, approaching their all-too-near grad- uation, the seniors held their last dance as a class. On graduation night as David Kohler delivers his valedictory, the class of 1958 will recall, with some nostalgia, four changing years at WCS, and will look ,ahead with keen anticipation to the future. 31 Q' Top Row C Eckel T. When The Forward Look was chosen as the theme for the 1958 Reveille, there remained only the job of putting forth the book with the staff's ideas incorporated in it. With Elaine Hatt as editor-in-chief and Louise Thorpe as business manager, about fifty seniors strug- gled to supervise picture taking, collect quotations, and hurry all the material before the deadline. This was no small task. Heading the photography committee was David Bliek, while David Smith's committee prepared the art work, including the modernistic dividers. Mar- garet Sherrell and Patricia Serafine supervised the literary committee who were responsible for all the written material in the book. Scurrying about for ads, Gail McGuire's committee wore out many legs and automobile tires. Susan Bartusek led the comf mittee of speedy typists who prepared the tinal copy. Subscriptions for the Reveille were taken under the direction of Betsy Vanlienwyk and the circulation committee. REVEILLE ron 1958 STAFF J. Vincent, A. Berlove, G. Conley, B. Algier, N, Antes. VARSITY FOOTBALL More than 50 boys turned out for a fighting Junior Varsity football squad which tallied a commendable two win, two loss, and two tie season record. The coaches, Mr. Robert Cobbett and Mr. Robert Rocco, had high hopes for a good season when the Little Ridgemen tied Brighton and McQuaid in season openers. Weakened by the loss of a number of players through injuries and the Hu, the junior eleven lost the next two games to Brockport and Brighton. After a rough, uphill battle and stiff training, the Jay Vees came roaring back to whip Brockport and Fairport, and wind up a fine season. Top Row: Mr. R. Rocco, J. White, R. Vogt, J. Hay, R. The Cochimen started the season successfully with a victory over Lyons. East Rochester dashed WCS hopes, however, in the next game. Because of the flu, the LeRoy, Irondequoit, and Newark games were cancelled, leaving an inexperienced Webster eleven to face powerful Canandaigua and Fair- port. Both squads delt defeat to the hometowners. The Ridgemen's final game, on a snow-covered gridiron, proved exciting as the Websterites reluctantly yielded a hard-fought contest to the Barons after marching to within scoring distance several times. 64 IUNIOR VARSITY SCORES Webster Opponents 28 Lyons 0 East Rochester 13 7 Canandaigua 33 0 Fairport 18 6 Brighton 14 A. VARSITY BASKETBALL The hoopsters from the Ridge completed a fine six won, 12 lost record for the 1957-58 season. This included a five wong seven lost county league record which warranted fourth place in the AA standings. The wins included two close ones over Irondequoit, a pair from Brighton, and two last-minute thrillers from Lyons and Penfield. A few points could have made the difference in the Ridgemen's losses. Canandaigua nabbed a one-pointer from the Blue and White, 60-59, as did Penfield, 57-56. McQuaid, strongest team in the county, was given trouble by Webster as they won by 11 points in the first encounter and had to come from behind in the end to cop a 59-53 victory in the second meeting. In the Ridgemen's highest scoring game, they were defeated, 93-73, by East Rochester Bombers, but not before they had rallied to score 52 points in the second half and come within nine points of their foe. 66 4 E Standrng Mr S Eggleston Mr R Rocco, Mr. W. The Blue and Gold sported a ten win, four loss season record and again proved that Webster is one of the crack baseball teams in the county. WCS de- feated Irondequoit in a season-closing thriller, 5-2, to attain the championship. The intramurals begin in the fall with soccer. Unfortunately, the season was cut short because of a flu epidemic in 1957. Janice Bane and Molly Morgan were captains of the winning seventh and eighth grade basketball teams. The sport which inspires the largest turnout among junior high girls is volleyball. A playoff game was necessary to break the tie between Bobbie King and Georgia Crane's seventh grade volley- ball teams. Pam Vragel's team were the undis- puted champions of the eighth grade. An attempt was made to initiate mixed volleyball intramurals. Junior high girls also participated in badminton, shulfleboard, ping- pong, tennis and softball intramurals. Playdays were held on the seventh grade level with seventh graders from Bay Road and West Webster schools attending. IUNIOR HIGH Girls who take part in junior high intramu- rals may be collecting points so that they may receive a numeral in their freshman year, a letter in their sophomore year, a monogram as a junior, and finally a chain awarded to seniors.
