MR. ROBERT L. THOMAS Every phase of modern living is interlaced with pathways and channels. As civilization has become more complex, restrictive lanes have been established for the sure course of rocketplanes and airships. Radio and television are confined to wave-lengths. The surface of land and sea is encompassed with routes over which transportation and communication are carried. These pathways which are recognized as so necessary for better physical living do limit us. They suggest likewise the benefits of rules and limitations. Three strikes are allowed a man in baseball and if a dozen were permitted, the game itself would soon lose its sporting appeal. Now the real fun of living consists in doing great things within our personal limitations. We are reminded that we must chose wisely our pathways of vocation, of interest and enjoyment, of service to ourselves and to others. One may entertain an ambition to become a star ballplayer, a great movie star, a famous statesman or a pros- perous business man. Eventually a goal and one path must be chosen. Important as these selections are yet the biggest and perhaps the most difficult to attain is the ambition to become an absolutely good person, to fill a genuinely worthy place in life in spite of any prevailing limitations. Your teachers join me in hoping that the pathways of devotion to enduring friendships and to preferment for the better things of life which you have blazed in high school here may be like the Great roads the Romans built that men might meet. And walls to keep strong men secure Now centuries are gone. and in defeat The walls are fallen, but the roads endure. R. L. Tnomms 9

BOARDWCF EDUCATIQN tg.,---I Mr. Loren Abrams, Dr. Harold O. Brown, Mr. Stanley A. Martin, President, Mr. John O. Thorpe, Mr. Ovid G. Fry As we have climbed this long adventurous path, several branches have led our friends from us. That one of these branches has not claimed you, Mr. Rayfield, has been a great source of pleasure to us. Your turn to travel a new road has now come. We, the faculty and students of Webster High School, and especially the class of forty-nine wish to extend our sincere thank-you, and our best wishes on your new venture. You have left more than iust a pleasant memory at this school which formerly claimed you as its head master. Here in the halls of Webster High School, the lyrics which you wrote for our Alma Mater will always spur us on to victory. Although you are resigning your post as superintendent of schools of Monroe County, and your hand will no longer guide us, we will still have certain lessons which you have taught us. Ai f .ai MR. WALLACE w. RAYFIELD
