Our every decision sends us along a new trail. Whether this new road carries us to happi- ness or defeat will hinge entirely upon our ability to make careful, intelligent choices, and this ability is in turn dependent upon the advice and instructions which are given to us on our long upward climb. The path which will guide you through this book, the 1949 Reveille, is symbolic of the path over which each and every one of us has walked during our four years at Webster High School. Because of the patient assis- tance, careful planning, and helpful advice of the faculty, every new trail which we have followed has carried us to a gold mine of ioys, rewards, and suc- cesses. The end of this path of pleasures is the beginning of the great path of life over which we must go forth without turning our minds to the unworthy things which tempt us. Although we will no longer have our teachers to help us distinguish right from wrong, the knowledge which they have imparted to us will be our faithful guides in the years to come. E u A ' , QL 9 gi Webster High School Webster, New York March 15, 1949 Dear Mr. Middleton: Classes have come and gone as regularly as the seasons, but you have remained to see yet another year go by. When we think of school, classes, and teachers, we think also of you. Teachers and classes are important, we know, but there were also many other important things which we did that would have been impossible without you. Our Junior and Senior plays couldn't have been produced unless the building had been kept warm. You stayed until the last person was gone before locking up after our mixers and proms. It was you who cleaned up after our sporting events. Everyone likes to take pride in an institution of which they are a part. You helped to make that possible for us. In the class rooms and on the field of sport your hand could always be seen. The neat grounds, the swept corridors, and the sparkling windows all helped make our pride in Webster High School all the greater. You were here to help move from the old school to the new. You have helped to keep our school as beautiful as it was when it was first built. These are iust a few of the reasons why we are dedicating this book to you, Mr. Middleton. lt is a small token of our appreciation of you and your many acts of kind ess. May the years ahead be kind to you. S. lncerely, The Class of 1949 '5 Z 6 MR G MAURICE MIDDLETON 'lf-fi -1 rx BOARDWCF EDUCATIQN tg.,---I Mr. Loren Abrams, Dr. Harold O. Brown, Mr. Stanley A. Martin, President, Mr. John O. Thorpe, Mr. Ovid G. Fry As we have climbed this long adventurous path, several branches have led our friends from us. That one of these branches has not claimed you, Mr. Rayfield, has been a great source of pleasure to us. Your turn to travel a new road has now come. We, the faculty and students of Webster High School, and especially the class of forty-nine wish to extend our sincere thank-you, and our best wishes on your new venture. You have left more than iust a pleasant memory at this school which formerly claimed you as its head master. Here in the halls of Webster High School, the lyrics which you wrote for our Alma Mater will always spur us on to victory. Although you are resigning your post as superintendent of schools of Monroe County, and your hand will no longer guide us, we will still have certain lessons which you have taught us. Ai f .ai MR. WALLACE w. RAYFIELD MR. ROBERT L. THOMAS Every phase of modern living is interlaced with pathways and channels. As civilization has become more complex, restrictive lanes have been established for the sure course of rocketplanes and airships. Radio and television are confined to wave-lengths. The surface of land and sea is encompassed with routes over which transportation and communication are carried. These pathways which are recognized as so necessary for better physical living do limit us. They suggest likewise the benefits of rules and limitations. Three strikes are allowed a man in baseball and if a dozen were permitted, the game itself would soon lose its sporting appeal. Now the real fun of living consists in doing great things within our personal limitations. We are reminded that we must chose wisely our pathways of vocation, of interest and enjoyment, of service to ourselves and to others. One may entertain an ambition to become a star ballplayer, a great movie star, a famous statesman or a pros- perous business man. Eventually a goal and one path must be chosen. Important as these selections are yet the biggest and perhaps the most difficult to attain is the ambition to become an absolutely good person, to fill a genuinely worthy place in life in spite of any prevailing limitations. Your teachers join me in hoping that the pathways of devotion to enduring friendships and to preferment for the better things of life which you have blazed in high school here may be like the Great roads the Romans built that men might meet. And walls to keep strong men secure Now centuries are gone. and in defeat The walls are fallen, but the roads endure. R. L. Tnomms 9 ,, 4. Varsity-8 wins, 8 Losses Mn Ronsm HUBBARD Junior Varsity-7 Wins, 9 Losses Mn JAMES Smrn Coaches 38 After a slow start, a green VVebster Varsity came through to make its presence felt in the second-half county loop race. Coach Jim Smith whipped together a fighting team, which lacked only height. The team featured only two seniors on starting five which gives hopes for having an excellent team next year. The team truly represented YVebster by never giving up however big the odds were against them. Outstanding among the players to graduate were Kelvin Tucker, Eddie Burr and Larry Panipinto. Two underclassmen whose performances caused opposing coaches' eyes to open in surprise were, Bill Schutt and Louie Levane. All the fellows did a bang-up job and should be congratulated. All-County mention was given to Babe Tucker, Eddie Burr, and Larry Panipinto. The Jay-Vee's, made up of underclassmen, showed some fine material for future Varsity teams. Though their record was not great, they showed aggressiveness and Willingness to learn. The ticket sale for Happy Holiday was record breaking. Under the able direction of llrs. lNIarian Powell, and with the helpful hints of Audrey Harrison, the seniors presented their play much to the delight of a capacity crowd. The audience laughed spontaneously over the ludicrous antics of lNIargaret Mayhack and Howard Hetzel who were cast in the kid sister and brother roles, while Rose lNIary Keller portrayed a dissatisfied and unhappy young lady who finally found happiness and cheer in her own family. In the role of an ambitious brother, Donald lNIcKay played an important part in bringing his sister and her boy friend, Robert Scheg, together. A. Harrison, Student Directory Mrs. Mari on Powell Directorg M. Wyand, Prompter. As Doris Cooman displayed her acting ability in the role of a kind understanding mother with a soft heart, Donald Huff added comedy to the presentation by his portrayal of a Republican grand- father. To make the play more American, these were the town gossips, June lNIarchner and Betty Coyendall, and the friendly cop Edgar Borkhuis. Sig VVe all wish to extend our heartiest' thanks to those people who a9319..R SO worked behind the scenes to make this play a success. . beg. S el' 0pldAb U,-D . Keller, CABINET a 2 R- Feucht, The cabinet members of the YV. H. S. Student Association have had a busy year led by Alan Sweitzer, President. Bleetings have been conducted according to strict parliamentary procedure. The main accomplishment this year has been the revision of the constitution under the capable direction of Robert Scheg, Sylvia fummings, Roger Dickinson. and Robert Feucht. Several committees of the Service Club have continued the work started last year. These are the public address, movie. and clean-up committees. to improve the appearance of our school. . . A clean-up campaign was sponsored in an attempt Rose Mary Keller was appointed chairman to organize a Roots-r's Club. a group interested in furthering school spirit at athletic events. Through the efforts of Blr. Ralph Blartin, busses have been available to carry a limited number of the club to basketball games. A bulletin board has been put up in the third floor corridor. Howard Hetzel was named pro- prietor and chief censor of this institution. Betty K'oykendall's corner of this project was the school calendar. She has been very conscientious in keep- ing it up-to-date. which helps busy students plan their schedules. Wie would also show our gratitude for the less obvious yet equally important job being done in this organization by the representatives of the underclasses. Without their co-operation. the Cabinet could not have operated for the beneiit of all in the school. 57 SPORTSMANSHIP BROTHERHCCD The Sportsmanship Brotherhood was organized in 1932 as an international organization of High School students with chapters in various schools throughout the country. Yvebster High School is a member in general and is represented by students who embody the ideals of the organization. The basis for the choice of these people is high scholarship, loyalty to the school and participation in many activities such as clubs, sports, school organizations, and class activities. This year, the Brotherhood was kept busy by a Football ltlixer, a Basketball and Baseball Mixer, a dinner-dance, checking at basketball games, the Initiation Assembly, and the Sportsmanship Bro- therhood Banquet, the culminating activity of the year. It is held in honor of the students who have ' .4 .Q B. Feucht, Vice-President, B. Foykendall, Program fhairmang R. Keller, President, M. Under Miss Ruth Phelps' guidance, this year's program has been enjoyable and successful. It is the aim of this organization to help the students of Webster High School to follow the path of good-sportsmanship through the years in whatever business or vocation they choose. Tap Roux' D. The summer season started with the annual county rally at Churchville during which county officers were elected. In July John liasch, Reuben Dye, Robert Kleinhammer, and Charles Stritzel spend a week at the state FFA camp, Oswegatchie, in the Adirondacks, where they received training in leadership, FFA activities, and forestry. The summer season closed with the county fair where the local Aggies walked away with five Hrst place awards out of a possible six in competition with the other five chapters of llonroe County. Henry Kujawa was high individual in fruit judging. Henry Hyman placed first in poultry and Donald lvalz was high man in potatoes. The beginning of fall saw the Aggies win three team awards at the Palmyra Fair. Joseph Madison, flop Roux' H. Kujawa, Vice-President: D. haler.. Secretary. Sippel, Miss Edith Mummery, D. Kreiser, M. Wyand, I. Preston. ive have before us the light of Home Econo- mics, a light which radiates throughout the world. This is the light of our ideals. VVith these words lNIarilyn VVyand, president, solemnly swore in nineteen new club members at the formal initiation on September twenty-eighth. After the organization of the club had been com- pleted, one of the biggest problems which faced its members was how to inflate the depleted treasury. They decided to hold a turkey raffle in November. Mrs. Hargarther held the winning ticketg and Violet Hibner's sale of eighty-three tickets rated her a turkey. The way to a man's heart is through his stom- ach. To prove this old adage, the home econo- mics girls held a Christmas party for the Future Farmers. The efforts of the girls were well recipro- cated by an entertainment which was planned by the boys. Top Roux' D. Kreiser, Secretary: N. Mc- Grath, Vice-President, B. Sippel, Treas- urer. First Row: Miss Edith Mummery, Adviser, M. Wyand, President. Again in April the club turned its efforts to please the Future Farmers by preparing and serving a banquet in honor of fathers and sons. Highlighting the activities of the year was the mothers' and daughters' banquet which was held in Blay. At this time the mothers had an opportunity to observe the skills of the girls enrolled in home economics classes, and to taste the food which they had prepared. Another noteworthy factor at this dinner was the efficiency with which the Future Farmers served. Thus we record 1948-49 a successful year of co-operative spirit.
