RUIEISRT L. THOMAS l'r1'nf1'pal lr has been truly said that the most precious possessions of a nation are its great traditions. Surely no people of any other country have been trustees of so great a heritage as have we in America. Now this inheritance, these traditions. are attacked viciously by unscrupulous enemies. This chal- lenge must be met valiantly by a people accustomed to freedom and to all that it means. As these words are read this liberty means more to us than ever before. With this freedom we have attained more happiness and security in America than at any other time or place in all history. Our duties in this crisis are certainly greater than these privileges which we have enjoyed. It is hoped that in great measure you may feel fortified to meet these problems as a result ol your contacts and training in this institution. The information you have acquired, the method of study and the practices you have followed here are all exceedingly important yet are secondary to the character strength you have developed up to this moment. Though new winds may blow, set your sails to their advantage. VVork with what you have and increase your strength constantly that you may meet vigorously this extraordinary challenge. Let me not hide behind the window-pane, Too sheltered and too snugly warm, lint let me drink the wind of strife, And brave the buffets of the storm. 9
