As assistants in administration, the Board of Directors, corn- posed of Fathers ranging in experience from 3 to IA years, has given him invaluable counsel and aid. At their quarterly meetings, current phases of school business and policy are treated, and from these meetings the rules of the school are evolved. Left: Rev. S. Sokulski, Principal, interrupts his work to survey the progress being made on the laying of the driveway. Below: Revs. E. Bak, J. Korabik, E. Kogut, S. Sokulski, E. Karlowicz, P. Lenczyk, P. Balcer and B. Ostrego, Members of the School Board, Iclockwisei decide matters of school policy. His nine years of teaching at Weber have prepared him to deal capably with the various student difficulties confronting him. He is, along with the principal, intensely interested in keeping abreast of modern educational trends and in applying them to the school. SECOND IN COMMAND Page I6 NUCLEUS 0F THE SCHCOL The hub of all student activities is the modern, attractive office. Here students transact their business and meet informally with their teachers after classes. Mrs. Irene Jadus files away the semester honor roll lists, one of her many tasks as secretary of the school. Rev. E. Korlowicz, C.R., the school bursar, telephones to check an the delivery of additional equipment for the school. Rev. A. lstok, C.R., who operates various machines in the office, is folding the principal's bulletin for mailing to the parents of students. fw .L ,J iw E r ln the relations between the faculty and the student body there is a deep interwoven covenant. A member ot the faculty can be reached for counsel whenever a student is confronted with a problem. A paternal concern exists in every person connected with the faculty in preparing the individual student mentally, physically, and especially spiritually. Every class carries with it the predominant flavor of basic morals to facilitate the solving of problems which the student will meet at the many crossroads of lite. Their main objective, however, is to imbue the student with the basic Christian principles which every Catholic gentleman should attain to be worthy ot his religion. All, l-owever, is not classroom studies, for members of the faculty have contributed their valuable time to aid the students interested in extra-curricular activities. Their work forthe year ends at graduation, but their teachings will be with us throughout our lifetimes. Page l B Rev. Edwin L. Bak. Athletic Director DEEP SIGHTED IN C.R. Teachers, new to their profession, came, and they were guided by the experienced hand of those instructors who have spent a good part of their lives in the education of others. However, the old also learn from the new. The newcomers have brought with them modern ideas and methods which have made the curriculum as up-to- date as possible. Meetings of the faculty, held to improve the policy and discipline of the school, have proved very profitable in the enrichment of the students life. Tentative plans have already been formulated to expand the faculty to teach the subiects that are to be introduced next year. Page 20 Basketball Coach THE MINDS Mr, Albert l.. In September the Weberites were ushered into a daring semi- modern structure and were awed by the elegance of the luxurious surroundings. The school, decorated with gray marble and pastel paints, provides an environment which is in harmony with the modern feeling. Displaying the finest in lighting, ventilation and heating equipment, The New Weber High School offers a sharp contrast indeed to the humble edifices of the pioneers of yesteryear in the refined decor of elegance and simplicity. l AT THE HELM HOWARD GORECKI Presadent Chosen because of has abulutues as a leader and representative of the sensors Howard Goreckn ments a vote of thanks from all the students for his work He lustly deserves the honors be stowed upon hum by has classmates for hrs outstandmg work both on the hard court and on the football field He has brought consrderable recognrtuon to the school as a result of has othletlc endeavors Page 24 MICHAEL DZIERWA Vlce President In representmg has fellow students nn class and on the gnduron Mlchoel Dzuerwa has always done a good 'ob and as deservmg of the gratrtude of all the students He was elected to serve Us treasurer by has tellow students because of hns outstondlng personalnty Another varsrty grrdder Emul wall long be remembered for has fine lnne backing EDWARD ZEMBAL, Secretary EMIL BAGGETTO, Treasurer BARSUKIEWICZ WALDEMAR J Wally St Peter Camslus Favorste Sublect Mathematics Ambmon Electrncal Engmeer BARTNICKI NORBERT J St Hedwig Glee Club l 2 3 4 Honor Roll 3 4 Favorlte Sublect Physucs Ambltlon Pharmacist Ba rts BIALCZAK WALTER J Wally Schubert School Football I Class Omcer l 2 Tramc Off? During the two previous years we had learned the value of a good education and and are now striving earnestly to attain that goal. One of the first things we learned was that the curriculum of a third year man is no pushover to be sure. The mysteries of chem- istry kept all of us in a daze throughout the year, while the right path to good was pointed out in the classes of Moral Guidance. After becoming accustomed to the mazes and perplexities of solid geometry, the course we took in plane geometry as sophomores seemed very easy. However, we realize that all of these subiects are helping us to pave the way for making an intelligent choice of vocations. As the year quickly passes we look forward anxiously to our Senior year. We all have our hearts set on making the grade as Juniors so that next year Weber High School will be proud of .its Senior class. Page 41 fi fi l an -nr 3 at Sn., A '1- 'H' 12 Wah... Under the capable directorship of Father George Jendrach, the heart of every school -the library-is throbbing with the vitality of a newborn child. A long range program of three years has been adopted to make the library complete as possible for the Weber student. The proposed plan is based on a proven formula for the thorough effectiveness cf a school library. lt is fast becoming the intellectual cafeteria of the school. Father George Jendrach, whO has studied library science at the Catholic University of America, is well prepared to meet the challenge of the establishment of a new school library that has been delegated to him. Because it is physically impossible to have the largest school library in existence, ours, however, will be one of the finest. Quality, not quantity, will reign supreme in the development of the intellectual center of the school. left: S. Kuspcr lleftl and D. Wisniewski search for data in the librarian's office. Center: J. Playing snappy marches and performing an intricate set of new maneuvers, the band showed the able tutoring of Mr. John Sovinec and Major Boothe to great advantage. To keep in shape for the annual Knights of Columbus parade and for an appearance at the dedication ceremonies rigorous practice sessions were held regularly. Terminating weeks of practice and closing their official season the band along with the Glee Club took part in the third annual concert held on April l in the school's social hall. Rendering a performance, which is considered by many as the finest in their brief career, they will always remain in our minds as the classic example of student initiative. A separate performance was also held March 31 for Nuns invited from many elementary schools throughout the city. Several of the selections presented in the concert were, The Overture from The Barber of Seville by Rossini, The Cotton King, a Sousa march, and Harmoniana, a saxophone ensemble presentation. Under the capable direction of Mr. Florian Czonstka, who for nine years has been conducting Weber's choristers, the organization has received wide recognition as one of the finest groups of its kind in Chicago. ln their debut at the dedication of the new school in mid-October such melodies as Bless This House, The Heavens Are Telling, Ol' Man River, and The Clang of the Forge were favor- ably received by the vast congregation. On December 22, the Glee Club collaborated with the Band in presenting various Christmas carols for the enjoyment of the student body. Again in conjunction with the Band at the Annual Concert of April l, they raised their voices to sing, among others, Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, by Victor Herbert, Ride, Cowboy, Ride, by David Guion, and Win- ter Song, a William Schaffer melody. This same program was presented on March 31 for Nuns representing almost every order in the city. Without doubt that ideal has been achieved for this year. The seeds of ambition have been firmly planted in these young men by their work in oration. lt definitely will serve as a firm block in the 'foundation of their achievements later in life. However, had it not been for Father Henry Szwaia, the moderator ofthe Heralders, these accomplishments could not have been realized. His guiding hand proved invaluable in the attainment of the club's successes. Page 72 MUSIC PLAYING, DANCERS SWAYING i SEN IOR SOCIAL COMMITTEE Standing Cleft to rightl C. Biela JUN Stan towicz, H. Through their special efforts these activities provided fun-filled evenings for Weberites and their guests. The culmination of their duties was the highlight of the year, the Senior Prom at the Edgewater Beach Hotel on May ll. The annual Junior Social had been a thing of the past, existing only in name, but through the pains taken by the Junior Social Committee, it was presented in the Social Hall on February IO. Although the music was all recorded, the variety provided by the different bands allowed the couples to enioy their favorite orchestra or style of dancing. As this book goes to press, plans for yet another social are in the advanced stage. The proceeds from the first social will be used to hire an orchestra to provide music for this affair. Page 73 COPY CHASERS In previous years the Weber News staff has been operated on a volunteer basis. This year, however, the office has given a junior class the opportunity to assume the responsibility for the editing of the school organ. The class is moderated by Father Edwin Mikolaiczyk whose advice is invaluable. Lessons are informal and the only homework is a story every two weeks. The paper is printed birmonthly and is anxiously awaited by the student body. To facilitate student editing a Varitype machine has been bought and the paper is now appearing in an offset print for the first time since its inception in l933. Page 74 Top lleft to rightj Rev. THE STORY BEHIND THE BGOK We too have a heritage to uphold, responsibilities to fulfill, a mission to complete, for the task of the 1951 Dolphin is to follow that trail blazed by the Dolphins of recent years. The goal we are aiming for is a difficult one. The 1949 and 1950 Dolphin have both received All-American ratings, the highest award of the National Scholastic Press Association. Serious obstacles have loomed on our path to success. Both the executive and managing editors left Weber High School at mideyear to attend Loyola University. In order that they might fulfill their responsi- bilities to the annual, evening meetings were held, placing serious impediments on staff unity. However, as this book goes to press, we, the editors, must express our thanks to the fine staff working with us, to the faculty of the school for the cooperation they extended to us and, most important, our deepest gratitude to the man behind the scenes, Father Bruno Ostrega, our moderator. His advice, counsel, and assistance greatly aided us in solving what seemed to be insurmountable difficulties which so often arose during the formulation of the book. lt is our hope that you, as a reader, will realize our magnanimous task and thus read into these lines the spirit of the new Weber. No one can be prouder than the Weber athlete who wears the major His dignity of bearing may be well justified because he has been selected to join the cream of Weber's Athletic crop. He remembers the many hours of long, hard practice, he remembers counting those precious minutes of his participation in league competition. Most deeply imbedded in his memory is that momentous day when his major monogram was tendered to him, never will he forget the big day when he first wore his letter to school to the envy of all his classmates. Weber's major monogram men symbolize the Red Horde's spirit-alive with action and determination. This year, as in previous years, the group functioned as a demo- cratic honorary organization. Since no officers were elected, the executive functions were fulfilled by Father E. Bak and a committee ofthe members. Throughout the year the members assisted the principal in maintaining order at rallies and other convocations pertinent to the Red Horde activities. K 'Br Coach Wally Lenczyk directs linemen in pre-game calisthenics. ON THE DECISIVE FIELD OF BATTLE The Red Horde's first tussle, a pre-season warm-up for league competition, was with the Leo Lions. Showing a passing attack unsurpassed in years, the mighty Weber eleven outscored the hard-charging Lions 27-l2. ln the annual St. Mary's of Nazareth Hospital Charity game the Red and White gridders swamped the Holy Trinity Tigers 58-6. Everything the McGuffmen did that day was right as they rolled down the field with the irresistible force of a iuggernaut. The first game of the league campaign pitted the Red and White against the defending Catholic League champions, the Fenwick Friars. Seeking their first victory over the Friars, whom they last defeated in 1944 for the League championship, the McGuffmen matched touchdown for touchdown in the first quarter. The second quarter, however, was a different story as the Lawlessmen scored two touchdowns-one on a blocked punt, the other on a forty-five-yard march. From then on the Oak Parkers were held at bay while the Red Horde scored once more. The damage, however, had been done. For the fifth time in as many games Fenwick defeated the Red Horde, this time 2l-l2. R Krupp l3Ol knocks a pass away from E. Kapalczynski 1411 A week later St. Ignatius, seeking its first victory over the Red Horde since l9A3, surprised a favored Red Horde eleven with hair-trigger play. The Wolves handed the Red and White its second defeat of the season as they capitalized on every Red Horde miscue and scored twenty points before the half ended. The handicap was too much for the iniury-loaded McGuffmen to overcome. When the final whistle blew, the Wolves were on the long end cf a 26-7 count. The hopes for a league victory met a setback when the Red Horde eleven encountered the Gaels of St. Philip Leading 7-O at the start of the third quarter, the Red Horde momentarily relaxed, the Gaels scored two quick touchdowns. The Red and White never quite recovered and the St. Philip eleven, gaining momentum, swept to another touchdown in the closing minutes of play. For the third time ofthe season the team tasted the bitterness of defeatg St. Philip 20 - Weber 7. Page 93 ROUGH AND READY The next game brought the Weber eleven face to face with a determined vengeance-seeking St. Mel eleven, which had not beaten the mighty Red Horde since l942. Grueling line play highlighted the first half which ended in a scoreless tie. The Knights, determined to avenge six straight defeats, broke the deadlock in the third quarter as they scored after the recovery of a loose ball. They added six more points in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter only to see the Red Horde tie the game on two St. Mel miscues. ln the last five minutes of play the Madison Streeters scored thirteen more points to take home the bacon 27-13. The following week the battered and bruised Red Horde went into their fifth league game, still seeking their first victory, with the cry, When we're down, we're the toughest. The Craginites overpowered a weak but valiant St. Patrick eleven. The work of the substitutes was the outstanding feature of the stampede which was highlighted by a sparkling and running attack. The Red Horde started moving in the second quarter and never relented their furious attack. When the smoke of battle Y , Q T , ?iR'7f'i'iU3 t , X 5 v 'KE' l. With regained confidence the Horde strode to upset the title-bound De Paul Demons. Seeking to avenge a 27-O shellacking handed them last year, the Red and White played an inspired game. The McGuffmen scored a quick touchdown in the first quarter but missed the point after touchdown-the deciding factor of the game. The Demons scored once in the second and once in the third quarters, added both points after touchdown. The Red Horde bounced back in the last period, after the now famous handkerchief episode and added the point after touchdown. The last minutes of the game were filled with excitement as the Red Horde ground away yard after yard in the march toward another touchdown as the final whistle blew. The final score read De Paul T4 - Weber T3. Closing the season on a note of optimism, the Weber- ites defeated the Loyola Ramblers 6-O in a game that had been postponed because of rain. Though their record was not particularly impressive, several members of the squad loom as varsity material. Their first game matched the Frosh with Angel Guardian Orphanage. Everyone expected them to be badly beaten by the usually powerful Angel Guardian eleven. However, the Weber eleven burst into a 13-0 leadg but by half time the score was tied 13-13. ln the second half the Frosh gridders succumbed to the inspired attack of the Angels 26-13. Even in defeat they were impressive and looked forward confidently to their next game, which pitted them against the Ramblers of Loyola Academy. The Red Horde correlated a smooth running attack and an excellent defense to whip Loyola 19-6. Superb team play on the part of Juzwik's men enabled them to overcome a six point lead held by the Ramblers and to bring home their first victory. Coach Juzwik then set to work preparing his charges for their game with next year's varsity. In spite of the high team spirit and eagerness to defeat the varsity, all hopes for a victory were shattered when the varsity pushed over three touchdowns in the first quarter. The Frosh, however, surprised many a varsity rooter by pushing across one touchdown in the third quarter against the heavier and more experienced varsity team. The final score was 40-7. They surprised most of the experts, who had predicted them a mediocre contender, when they stunned their league competitors. ln the first round their opponents fell five times before their sharpshooting, while the McGuffmen yielded to their opponents twice. They emerged from the second round with A wins and 3 setbacks. The combined record showed 9 victories against 5 losses -good enough for second place in the North Section. The golf team, ably directed by Father A. lstok, is composed ot a Junior and a Senior team -each of which competes in the annual Catholic League Tournament, which will be held this year at the Glencoe Golf Club, Glencoe, Ill. As strenuous a sport, but not as lauded as football or basketball, is tennis. The squad, under the direc- tion and coaching of Mr. W. Earwaker, will test its power in the Catholic League Tournament in May. For the first time since l944, when the netters won the League championship, hopes for the team are high, forthe candidates are more numerous than in any previous season and many of the Freshmen have had experience. Pitting class against class in friendly competition, intramural sports help produce a sound and healthy body. Basketball, elimination, volleyball, boxing, acrobatics on the trampoline, and contest with a medicine ball provide more than enough exercise for the Weberite. As the book goes to press, a recently organized rowing crew practices three times weekly at the Lincoln Park lagoon. W. Steck demonstrates to lleft to rightl E. Sychta, R. Bolanow- ski, R.
