A QDQUCQ My soul, there is a country Par beyond the stars, Where stands a winged sentry All skillful in the wars. There, above noise and danger, Sweet Peace sits crowned with smiles And One born in a manger Commands the beauteous files. He is thy gracious friend, And - O my soul, awake! - Did in pure love descend To die here for thy sake. lf thou canst get but thither, There grows the flower of peace The rose that cannot wither, Thy fortress and thy ease. Leave, then, thy foolish ranges, For none can thee secure But One who never changes, Thy God, thy life, thy cure. -Henry Vaughan X PEACE ON EARTH GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN Thus was the cry e hoed 2000 years ago and rt has re echoed through the ages Smce the be grrm ng ot tlme man has sought peace and rt seems to have always eluded hls grasp Let us hope and pray that the dox e ot peace soon WLH close harm hy wrth hrs rtelghbor May the cry Peace on Earth Good Wlll Toward Men re mam a lastmg ymhol and may we keep lt thus ll 7 C I , A i . The lntramurals were again resumed this year under the able supervision at caach Frank McGrath. The league was divided intc twc divisicnsi the Seniar league and the Freshman league. The season was Well raunded with a schedule which included basketball volleyball, and sattball. ONE HOUR WITH YOU The basketball race found the Senior team, the Senators, leading the standings with a Sophomore team, the Braves, running a close second. The Skyrockets, a Freshman team, dominated their league, with the Vindicators as runner-ups. The champions were acclaimed at an unusual ceremony when the entire school turned out to watch' the teams battle, When the smolie had cleared, the Slcyrockets had run over the Vindicators by a score 34-8, while the Sen- ators defeated the Braves l9el2 for the Senior championship. ln the Freshman game Dick Zaleslqi led the attack of the Slcyrockets with l4 points, The Senior game saw the forwards, Al Koziol and Lefty Michon hit the hoop for 8 and 5 points respectively, Iohnny Stachurski and l'Buss Mack of the Braves made a valiant at- tempt to stem the tide, but couldn't auite match the deadliness of the Senior forwards. After the contests had been completed, the Athletic De- partment sponsored a party for the participants in the Championship games. Basketball having been completed, volley- ball came into the limelight. Volleyball, in the past few years, became more popular at Weber, due to the added interest of the student body and the intensified competition among the num- erous classes. The champions of the Senior league were finally crowned when the Pirates beat the Senators in a hard fought contest, and the Mustangs were claimed undisputed champs in the Freshman league. The current season was rounded out with softball, the last feature. Wiiile this article is rolling off the press, the championship game is being battled out in the gym. Competition is as fierce as ever, as both upper and lower class- men struggle in their last battle of the year. The main purpose of intramural sports is to enliven the routine of the average student. lt temporarily eases the pupils mind from the stress of constant and continuous studies. Thanks and appreciation are expressed by all the students to Coach Frank McGrath for his excellent job in planning and fulfilling a well- balanced intramural schedule. . . C 1 . . , - 1 SUNDAY, MONDAY, OR ALWAYS ACT I The warning bell was rung, the house was full, the actors took their places on the stage. Both actors and producers knew that the work before them was no farce. Everyone from the greenest Freshmen to the most experienced faculty member put in his utmost efforts to make the play a success. An intermission- 'The Get Acauainted Social -permitted the audience to meet the producers without their makefup. Next came the ul-lalloween Social. The hard punching Shed Horde' football team under the supervision of Coach Fd Vyzral gave one of the greatest performances shown the school in recent years. A berth on the AllfCity Team for loe Depka and honorable mentions on the All-North Section Team were bestowed upon Frank Zilla, 'Cookie' Wojcik, and Her- man Miskowicz, The Athletic Department and the student body then sponsored the annual Football Dance at which the athletes received their awards. Uncle Sam, one of the greatest producers, permitted the Seniors and luniors to strut their stuff in the Air Corps examinaf tions. Before they knew it, the students and faculty were greeted by a well earned inter mission, the Christmas Holidays. ACT II Hearing of the exciting and interesting events about to take place, the cast and audience returned to the 'Little Theatre on Division Street. The greatest public exhibition of the year, The Senior Promenade, was held at the beautiful Edgewater Beach Hotel, The student body then prepared for the greatest test of their work thus far, the semester ex- aminations, To thank the good Lord for His blessings and to ask for help in future under- takings, the annual retreat was conducted by the Rev. Joseph Baker, CR. A week later sixf teen Seniors received their diplomas at St. Stanislaus K, Church as a result of an accelf erated course. Thus ended Act ll ACT III The third act found one of the main char' acters of the cast missing. The Rev. E. Winkle- man had assumed the position as assistant at St. l-ledwigs parish. lvlonotony of the first scene in the third act was broken by the Hlnlolif day Social, Then Uncle Sam still in need of skillful performers presented the Seniors with the Army Afl2 and Navy VflZ tests in the middle of March, The rising action of the l943f44 school year reached its peak when the Senior basketball team took the North Sec- tion Championship while the luniors went on to win the City Title from Marshall of the Public League. Easter Holidays served as a termina- tion for the third act. ACT IV Shortly after the rife of the final curtain, the annual Concert and Dance wa.: pre.1ffnte'l by the Qrchestrcw and Glee Club A banquet in honor of the basketball teams was held at the Hamilton Hotel April 3Uth The May Frolic, which added' a touch of gaiety to the last act, ccrrzpleted the social season Final examinations were new upon the students Commencement exercises en lune 4th provided the las' scene for Act lV, and when school officially closed a week later, the great play USchool Year ' carrie to a close and was acclaimed as a success by both the east and the audience Top left: Grand March at the Senior Promenade Top right: Why so surprised, Ray?
